    Well you can hit and run me if that's what you choose to do. But I'd simply ask that you point to where I've asked for anything more than that. Perhaps I've unfairly asked for something unreasonable from them, but I don't believe that I have. I may not have given them due credit for a nice win against Fresno State, but then again, I believe I've been pretty consistent in saying that I really only care about conference results. The talent gap between power 5 teams and the rest are simply to wide to be used as any kind of measurement, IMO.

    This looks like pretty much every loss so far under Fleck. What exactly is my brand of criticism, and what am I allowed to criticize, and what am I not allowed to criticize? I'd honestly like to know. Because all I'm asking for is some kind of measurable progress, and to be at least competitive against the poor to mediocre Big10 teams. I don't feel like I'm asking for anything unreasonable.

    They didn't look any different than they have since Fleck got here. Yet, three weeks ago I was told I had to wait 3 or 4 more years to criticize any results. I don't understand what is different now.

    At the time of my post, Purdue was 3-1, the Gophers were 0-4. Non conference records can't be used for comparison. The talent level is too vast. It matters what Purdue did to Ohio State because that shows that Ohio State isn't any good, which makes hanging with them for 3 quarters meaningless. You still haven't answered my question. How many Big 10 wins are reasonable to expect next year?

    If Joe wanted to play 3 more years, he wouldn't be considering retirement, would he?

    You seem to be making his point for him. The FO can't control how players perform. All they can do is add or subtract talent from the roster. The feeling, both here and in the media, was that the roster was in a good place heading into the season. Those players underperforming is on the field staff, not the front office.

    That assumes that Buxton and Sano's issues are purely mechanical. I don't believe that to be the case. There is plenty going with those two that a manager can influence.

    Can you point to the unrealistic expectations in here? Is being competitive with an 0-6 Nebraska team really an unrealistic expectation?

    You mean the Ohio St. that got destroyed by a Purdue program whose staff was hired the same year as Fleck, and was maybe the worst program in the country when they took over? And I assume it's just coincidence that you left off Nebraska, who was 0-6 when they played us? You also didn't answer my question. That's my problem. I'm willing to be patient, but nobody will put a concrete expectation on paper. And I suspect they won't do it because they want to continue to defend Fleck no matter what the results are, no matter how long they continue. They can't do that if they commit to an expectation and it's not met.

    So how many Big 10 wins are reasonable to expect next year? I don't think anyone expects a Rose Bowl. How about at least hanging within 10 points in a Big 10 game? That'd at least be a step in the right direction. I think the complete lack of competitiveness in these games is what is causing impatience. People might be more willing to see a light at the end of the tunnel if they were competing, but just not mature enough to know how to seal the deal yet. That's not the case though. They just get clobbered week in and week out, even to other struggling programs and other new coaching staffs. Where is the progress?

    What's the point? Be honest, could the level of play sink low enough between now and the end of the season that you'd change your mind? I don't gather that you would, so what difference does it make to you if I wait until after the year to make any judgments?

    That's going to be pretty tough, unless he's going back in time. You don't put on an event like they did for Joe, only to bring him back for another season.

    That's a myth anyway. 9 of 11 defensive starters are upperclassmen. 1 freshman, 1 sophomore. And, we just got steamrolled by a true freshman QB. But, yeah, some will say we do. I was told I can't expect a Big 10 win for 3 or 4 more years, a couple pages back.

    When a first baseman can carry a Drew Butera like bat, and still carve out a long MLB career, then I'll believe that elite first base defense is much more valuable than average first base defense.

    Are you really saying that scholarships are never honored when injury ends a college football career? Are you sure about that?

    They all signed up voluntarily. I agree the system is exploitative. It should be reformed. You'll get no argument from me on that. But right now, this is the system we have, and every one of them signed up voluntarily. Not one of them was forced against their will to join college football. And you won't find one post here from me ripping a Gophers player. Precisely because they aren't being paid. Every ounce of my criticism has been directed at the guy who is being paid millions. The guy paid millions to find, develop, and coach these unpaid players is the one that will get 100% of my criticism.

    Perhaps they thought they were serious. But again, without a player opt out, it wasn't. Darvish wanted a player opt out, and someone was going to give him one.

    Darvish wasn't going to sign without a player opt out. Any offer that didn't include one wasn't particularly close. Aside from that, $26 million is a pretty huge difference.

    Tyler Austin had 0 errors, league average range factor, and exactly neutral defensive runs saved. It's fair to argue that he's not a defensive asset over there. But calling him a butcher is certainly not based on any factual data.
