Fair, but I don't think the others are wildly optimistic. These are good players, that's why we have the second best record in baseball. Good players get paid. If we don't think they'll continue to be good, then what's the point of having Kimbrel on the 2021 roster anyway?

I mean, Ricky Nolasco got $12 million per year. Starting pitching is expensive on the open market, I don't understand why you think this is inaccurate?

I think the Bamtech money was the main driver of last year's increased payroll though, so I'm not sure we can use that as a benchmark. I'll be shocked, pleasantly, if the Twins have an opening day payroll of $150 million anytime soon.

We don't have philosophical differences though Van. I'd love the players to make more, I'd love the team to spend more. I just realize the Pohlad's aren't changing, and it's not constructive to complain about it EVERY TIME the team doesn't get a player I want.

I'm not saying they can't. I'm saying they won't. Period. No amount of complaining over and over about it is going to change that. I'd love if they spent more than a perfect business model would suggest. But I realize that isn't going to happen, so why continue to make every thread a cheap Pohlad thread? How is that constructive?

As revenue avenues have skyrocketed over the last 15 years, sports franchises have gone from a psuedo hobby that was also a good long term investment, into one of the most profitable businesses that one can own. The modern sports franchise owner IS running it like any other business. Sure, there may be a few of the old style left, but the Twins are not one of them. I just think it's time to accept that and move forward.

We'll see how Kuechel does, but I don't think he'd even be much of an improvement in our rotation. I was hoping we'd get Kimbrel, but not so much Kuechel.

A catcher that hits like Garver, you think that's high? That's essentially what Rosario is getting ARB1 as a corner outfielder.

$20 million combined was the minimum for back loaded extensions. This projection has them playing out year by year. Your Cron comment is evidence that you didn't read the post all the way through. Same goes for your comment regarding Odorizzi and Gibson. Yes, you could swap out Parker and the FA for Kimbrel, but that makes an already shaky bullpen that I have projected above, and makes it even thinner. I would expect Rosario to get more than Ozuna, yes, mostly due to inflation. Sano might be high, I don't know. What do you think he'll get in ARB3? Buxton I actually think I'm likely to be low on. I certainly can't force anyone to join me, but I think what we're seeing right now is Buxton's floor going forward. I expect a perennial fringe MVP candidate. Which projections are wildly optimistic? And why would that affect payroll? Our payroll is always going to be in that 14th-19th range, I don't think performance is going to change that. I don't have the FO finding bargains, because bargains would actually raise my projected payroll above, as all openings except one reliever we're filled with min salaries. Would you care to assemble your 2021 protection, that keeps the core together, and see how Kimbrel fits in?

If he just wants to win games, and isn't going to demand to pitch the 9th, then why are we discussing it? I never suggested that was his stance, just gave my opinion of how I felt IF that was the case. A hypothetical stance that you had no problem engaging in before.

That's not what I was comparing. I was comparing your, "spending $15 million isn't going to break Jim Pohlad" comment. How much or how little the money means to him is completely irrelevant. If he thinks spending $15 million more will make him more profit, he'll do it in a heartbeat. If he thinks it won't, then he will not do it, nor should he. Just like every other successful business in America. Every, single, one. Continuing to pile on a business owner for running his business like a business is getting crazy around here. It gets to a point where it's not advancing any kind of conversation at all any more, it's just beating a dead horse. Can't we just state the fact that this is how he runs the business, once, and then move on to things that are actually malleable, like what the FO does with the budget they are allocated? Instead of turning every decision we don't like into a expose on how cheap the Pohlad's are?

C: Garver (ARB1): $4.5 million C: Astudillo: $0.6 million 1B: Cron (3/35 extension): $11.7 2B: Polanco: $4.3 SS: Lewis/Arraez/Javier etc.:$0.6 3B: Sano (ARB 3): $13.5 UTIL: ?? : $0.6 OF: Rosario (ARB 3): $17.0 OF: Buxton (ARB 3): $15.5 OF: Kepler: $6.5 OF/1B/DH: Kirilloff: $0.6 INF: ??? $0.6 SP Berrios (ARB 2): $13.5 SP Odorizzi (4/72): $18.0 SP Gibson (4/72): $18.0 SP Mejia (ARB 1): $2.2 SP Romero/Thorpe,etc: $0.6 RP Rogers (ARB 3): $8.5 RP Parker (2/15): $7.5 RP May (1/4.5): $4.5 RP Moya: $0.6 RP Hildenberger: $0.6 RP Free Agent: $8.0 RP Rookie: $0.6 SP/RP Rookie: $0.6 That puts you at $162.8 million, without adding much. They won't pay that. So, ditch the Cron extension and go with a rookie, that gets you to $151.1 million. Choose Odor or Gibson, instead of both, that gets you to $133.1. That is more realistic, but now our rotation is pretty shaky. How are we fitting $16 million in for Kimbrel?

The Pohlad's don't operate that way though. They aren't baseball people. I'm sure they'd like to win, but only because winning brings fans. They are businessmen. Winning to them is maximizing profit. They don't view this business as different than any other business venture. Ray Kroc didn't care about winning James Beard awards, he cared about making billions of dollars. I just don't understand the reason to constantly complain about something that is never going to change. It'd be like constantly complaining to everyone how stupid it is that humans don't have wings.

Pointing out that they often don't work isn't the same thing as saying never do it. It's acknowledging that the FO, whether we like it or not, has limited resources. The risk of it not working out has to be weighed. I read his comments as more of a rebuttal towards the posters who are saying that they should have been willing to pay more than they are comfortable valuing him at, just because that's what it takes to get him. We all do this in life, everyday. When we go to lunch, we have an approximate idea of what we're willing to pay for a burger. We may really love a car that we look at, but at some point we say no if it crosses a certain budgetary line. Same with buying a house. You put in a fair offer, someone beats it, and you have a choice. You can try to outbid them, but at some point we all have a threshold where we have to walk away, even if we really love the house, right?

I don't think that's even strategically better anymore. Starters are no longer being taken out because of pitch counts, they are taken out because of 3rd or 4th time through the order. -
I don't believe I've read a single post that says, or even implies that. It's possible I missed them though, could you point them out?

Can't a person have wanted Kimbrel, while also understanding that the FO doesn't have an unlimited bucket of resources to operate from? Why does it have to be, "you either have to want Kimbrel at any and all costs, or not want him at all?" Some of us might have thought there was a decent chance Kimbrel would accept a 1 year deal, so he could try FA again next year with no draft pick restrictions. It turns out he wasn't interested in that.
