This is going to come out kind of inarticulate, but, hey, it's the comments section on the Internet, so here we go. To me, it's a control thing from the front office. They want the on-field product to reflect their genius rather than being a collection of players who independently find their own ways to succeed. Players like Arraez and Rosario march to a different drummer, and they're out. Rocco is completely submissive to their plan, a mere functionary, a paper-pusher, and he's Manager for Life. The consistent reenactment of the front office's Baseball Genius matters more than the results, so there are no consequences for those who follow orders. It's very bland and off-putting. I stopped watching last year.

Jax leads baseball - all of baseball - in the Fangraphs stat known as "meltdowns." That means he's had the most appearances where he cost the team more than 6% win probability. A lot of guys could do worse, but their managers don't keep running them out there. Blame the manager for putting him in or the front office for not providing a better alternative, but he is really, statistically, costing this team wins.

Was it the Brent Rooker Trade After All?
singlesoverwalks commented on Ted Schwerzler 's article in Twins
I like Rooker and I'm glad he's putting something together here. I don't blame the Twins for trading him - they have a lot of Rooker-like players. On the other hand, trading Rogers was very galaxy brain of them.- 12 comments

Just checked my work. Jorge Polanco and Caleb Thielbar were both on the last Gardenhire team. See, the thing is, neither of them played in these games.

Maybe this is the effect of not having any guys left who remember Gardy's mental block in Yankee Stadium?

I was looking at the Fangraphs stat "meltdowns." A relief pitcher gets stuck with a meltdown when their appearance has a -0.06 win expectancy. Jax actually tied for the league lead in this category with 17. He was also 41st in the opposite of meltdowns - shutdowns - with 25. He had the 31st most appearances in the league.

I expect Sanó will get red hot in AAA at some point for some non-Twins team and get a call-up. I don't know how he'll perform in the majors. I think the right coach could possibly still get through to him, unless he's dealing with some deeper problem that we don't know about. I wish him the best. I always thought he had his heart in the right place. Lazy? What shows he's lazy, weight gain? A lot of people, professional athletes included, struggle with their weight. It's rarely because of laziness.

Vía Fangraphs, here are the lowest average seasons from 1980 to 2002, minimum 350 PA (link below). A lot of disastrous years for large men like Rob Deer, Chris Davis, Adam Dunn, and Logan Morrison. Most of the players on this list never recovered; most who did were (or are) defense-first catchers. Did any of the Gallo-like sluggers ever make it back to usefulness? Yeah. Adam Dunn in 2012 hit .219 with 41 home runs a year after hitting .159 with 11 HR. And Rob Deer in 1992 hit .247 with 32 home runs a year after his legendary 1991, when he hit .179 (which a lot of players did worse than in 2021 and 2022). So is it possible? Yeah. It's not the prevailing trend, but we can hope for a 2012 Dunn or a 1992 Rob Deer. It feels weird saying that because those are two of my least favorite players ever, but, well, Gallo is a Twin now. This is what we've got. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=np&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=350&type=8&season=2022&month=0&season1=1980&ind=1&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=1980-01-01&enddate=2022-12-31&sort=14,a

Offseason Status Update: Time to Pivot
singlesoverwalks replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I want the Twins to take the $28.5m/year they offered Carlos Correa and buy a CD. I want proof of the CD. They need to frame it and put it on display at Target Field. Then next year they add that to whatever they have left over from this year and spend it all on free agents. Don't blow it on Dansby Swanson this year.- 38 replies

Minnesota Twins Sign Catcher Christian Vazquez
singlesoverwalks replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Vazquez and Correa are both Puerto Rico Baseball Academy products (4 years apart). I bet the FO thinks having Vazquez around will make the Twins more enticing to Correa. https://www.baseball-reference.com/schools/index.cgi?key_school=6a3a85df- 51 replies

What’s Next for Miguel Sano?
singlesoverwalks replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm pretty sure the 75% strikeout jags he went on had to be psychological. Maybe getting out of Minnesota, with the history of high expectations, helps him psychologically.- 24 replies

Minnesota Adds Farmer to Infield Mix
singlesoverwalks replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If one kind of hitter is going to benefit from the new defensive positioning rules it's the line drive hitter, right? Here are the top LD% hitters of 2022 per Fangraphs. The Twins just traded away #15 (a $10M mostly 3B who they have a replacement for) and picked up #8 ($5M, mostly SS, they don't have a shortstop anymore). -
If the name of the game is avoiding injuries, then maybe we need management that selects players and staff who can minimize injuries.

Twins Playing for What May Happen
singlesoverwalks replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes. This happens all the time. Rocco is slow to pull the trigger on the obvious move. Both Tom Kelly and Ron Garden hire would have automatically brought in Thielbar in that situation. Rocco gets analysis paralysis. The game moves too fast for him.- 33 replies

What gets me is this: if you have a shaky bullpen, you should let your starters go deeper into games.- 33 replies

There's a weird tendency with Rocco to pull starters early when they're doing well and stick with them when they're having a bad game. I guess he sees it as motivational?

Sending Bundy back out there after he gave up six runs: classic Baldelli move. Bundy then giving up three more runs: classic Baldelli result.

I love the wins just as much as the next individual but let's stipulate that no team has ever deserved to be swept as much as these Tigers. In the 4-run inning they threw the ball into the back of a running bunter TWICE IN A ROW. You all saw how the Twins had a walk-off the-other-team-made-an-error in the first game (that was the second game they won this way during this streak). Practically every time the Tigers touch the ball, they bobble it. It is a sight to behold. They may be sniffing glue. Don't call me a killjoy. You should definitely still enjoy it. It's baseball and when things go your way, you take it, because when things don't go your way you lose and it's no fun.

And adding on to that, you might use the opener strategy or the "low starter innings" strategy if your bullpen is a strength, like we think of the classic Rays teams that first tried the "opener" strategy. It really doesn't make sense in the Twins' case, where it currently looks like the starting rotation is relatively strong compared to the bullpen. Simplified basic pitching management that we all know: You want to send out your best pitcher available at the moment. A few complicating (and also obvious) factors: pitchers get tired and therefore less effective as they pitch more, so your "best pitcher" available changes over time, and of course you don't want to over-stress your pitchers and cause injury, which leads to the typical strategies of having high-leverage and low-leverage pitchers, like a "long man" to cover innings where you are losing badly, so you can save stress on high-leverage pitchers, and lower-quality relievers you bring in when you are down a run or two or leading big, etc. Rocco has trouble selecting his best available pitcher on the fly. In the 5th inning yesterday, there was much more reason to be confident in Archer than Winder, and really little reason to think that another inning was going to injure Archer. It was a high-leverage moment because the game was tied, and it was a no-brainer to leave Archer in there based on what our eyes could see. The best path probably would have been to send Archer out for the 5th, with a higher-leverage reliever warming up in case the 5th inning started to go south on Archer. It just seems like Baldelli maps his pitchers out ahead of time and sticks to the plan regardless of the information he's getting from the game itself. He assumed Archer would be gassed and struggling to contain the Dodgers after 4 innings, so he planned to bring in a reliever in the 5th inning. He didn't change his plan based on the actual game-time information that Archer was doing well after 4 innings. And he probably pre-planned bringing in Winder, which would make sense in a low-leverage situation where the Dodgers had shelled Archer - something that certainly seemed like a very real possibility before the game. But it made no sense in the situation. I know I'm beating a dead horse. But actually, it's not a dead horse, because Rocco is still out there managing games for us, so, he's a live horse, and I'm beating him, end of post.

I have to agree. Baseball is baseball and different things go right and wrong every night, but the most consistent reaction to Twins games is that Rocco brought in the wrong pitchers at the wrong time. Duffey in the ninth in game 2, our best high-leverage pitchers with a 4-run lead in game 4, NOT using Winder with that lead in game 4, pulling Archer early, then bringing Winder in for his MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT in a TIE GAME against the FREAKING DODGERS. Nothing makes any sense and I am sure, absolutely convinced, at this point, based on three years of evidence, that Baldelli can't handle the moment-to-moment decision-making required of a major-league manager.

Fangraphs projects that lousy rotation and good lineup to finish at 82-80, which is more optimistic than I feel. That looks like a sub-500 pitching staff to me. I would sign Johnny Cueto.
