I'm fascinated by how the Twins' playoff odds graph on Fangraphs is pretty much a sine wave. https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds-graphs?lg=AL&div=C&stat=poff&year=2024 By the way, this site published a post calling the Twins "overwhelming favorites" to win the division when they were at their peak. 😂

Technically, I didn't say I'm not sympathetic. I only said the audience would be less sympathetic. Man, I love Royce Lewis.

If he had been traded for anyone other than Jake Cave you would find a much more sympathetic audience.

I'm glad you contributed this article because for some time I've been looking for an excuse to talk about how amazing Hrbek was at the underhanded toss to the pitcher covering first. Every time that play happened, Hrbek had the ball hovering in front of the pitcher at chest level exactly one step before the pitcher reached the base. It was uncanny. Go back and watch the '87 or '91 World Series (full games are on YouTube), you'll see it in action. So Hrbek was probably a low-TIH 1B. That is all. Thanks for the post.

He ceased being a Twins farmhand in 2018 when they traded him for Yankee outfielder Jake Cave.

I'm going to join what I presume is the chorus questioning the word choice "overwhelming." Let's take Fangraph's 81% projection on the Twins making the playoffs. That means there's a 19% chance that the Twins miss the playoffs. If I roll a 6-sided die, the chance I roll a 1 is only about 17%. So there's better than the chance of rolling a 1 that the Twins miss the playoffs, per Fangraphs. I'd just say they're favorites. A lot could change.

I gotcha Gamblerssoftball: https://www.mlb.com/video/hunter-olson-get-out-at-home-c2522587983 That photo is super famous! I vividly remember a 2-page spread of it in Sports Illustrated. By the way, the catcher is Minnesotan and former Twin Greg Olson, and Gladden didn't really hit him that hard. Greg was just like that.

"Farmer, who decked the outfielder and scored" Brilliant tactic - hard to throw home when you're KO'd.

Was that not a bit of brainlock on Rocco's part when he chose NOT to pinch-run for Santana when he was standing on first with one out in the bottom of the ninth? (Sorry to be a spoilsport.)

If the team is sloppy, that's on the manager. Look, I hate to sound like the old grumpy guy that I am, but Tom Kelly prepared his teams. They took fielding practice and those teams were defensively sharp. They worked on the details like taking extra bases, and that helped them make their own luck. You might say that today's players are different, but if you watch the Astros play, it's notable that they just cut fewer corners and pay more attention than the Twins. It's team culture.

Per the second chart in this Fangraphs article, the Twins have had the 6th-worst drop in MLB of their playoff odds since the season began. That about matches how I'm feeling emotionally. This is a bottom 20%-level disappointment.

I'm not in any way a medical professional or professional sports person or anything. I'm just a guy typing into a comment box on my phone. But I'm going to throw out a theory here: it's the cold weather. Athletes "warm up" to prevent injuries like strains and pulls. It stands to reason, then, that weather that cools your body down more quickly would tend to lead to more of these injuries. Of course, this doesn't explain all the injuries (getting your fingers broken by pitches and do forth), but it is an explanation for why we tend to have more injuries.

I think they like Farmer. He fits with their approach - they really like platooning and positional flexibility, and he has big platoon splits and positional flexibility. And we have a lot of players who can't hit left-handed pitching.

Folks; if Austin Martin is worth having on the major league roster, then he'll mash at AAA (something he has not yet come close to doing), and the team wil make room for him. The presence of Manuel Margot will definitely not block Austin Martin.

There's not space to maybe squeeze in one.more bat on the roster? Maybe Larnach gets one more chance?

If Margot's knee is healed, then he makes perfect sense as the good-fielding Buxton backup and right-handed replacement for Kepler and Wallner. We need speed, fielding, and low(er) strikeouts. Sounds like the prospect we gave up had some fans, but they hedged their bets on the prospect capital, so fine. I really, really hope we're not taking LA's word on the health of Margot's knee. Passing a physical is standard practice... Right?

I have a theory - and this is just a theory, just a guy on the Internet with a theory - that there's less money out there to pay free agents this year because of the regional sports network bankruptcy reducing some teams' revenue and introducing more long-term risk. But teams still acted like there was the same amount of money at the start of the off-season, giving out all those record contracts, so guys who are still unsigned are really going to get squeezed now.
