Losses hurt, but, my goodness, what a game. Loperfido hits one down the RF line, right on the chalk, to score a couple runs, then, makes that barehand catch falling on the warning track. Altuve runs down a pop up with the bases loaded and makes a back to the infield catch on Correa. Correa makes an impossible play on Pena's grounder up the middle. Miranda runs his hit streak to 10 ABs. The Twins homer for the 22nd straight game, and put up seven runs in the bottom of nine with two outs. I mean, come on people, this game was off the chain, all this in one nine inning game!

I am thinking that it is time for Brooks Lee to make his MLB debut. When Lewis gets a timeline, Farmer's days are numbered. Some team may trade a low A backend pitcher with velocity for infield depth.

Don't forget on Radke, and perhaps Ober, getting out of the first inning without surrendering runs was his biggest challenge. It was like he had to learn how to get this pitches to work at the beginning of every game. But once he did, it was like a magician with a bag of tricks == now you see it, now you don't, now you can't.

New Yorkers are still waiting for the Thielbar curve ball to Giancarlo Stanton to come down in that one winnable game in the Bronx. It wasn't a hanger either. It was his best pitch.

Ever since Michael Wacha proclaimed on National TV during the Houston playoff series that Wallner had a hole in his swing -- up and inside fastballs -- big enough to drive a truck through, Wallner has not been the same guy. But, baseball is a game of adjustments and teams know his weakness as much as he does.

You know it's bad when the author refers to the hitting coach as Popovich and no one really notices. Fifteen Ks is five full innings of nothing happening. Five. It's simply unwatchable.

Yeah, I think the analytics, when you have a shutdown bullpen, show how getting a lead in the middle innings is pretty much the ballgame. Thus, pinch-hitting for Julien. Baldelli also knows the value of getting Margot some confidence. It's early. We can allow the manager a chance to get his team all pulling in the same direction.

A Tiny Schedule Perk for the 2024 Twins
Old Twins Hat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Dodgers have spent a BILLION dollars on free agents so far this off-season. BILLION with a B. Baseball needs to do something before L.A. just ups and buys an entire team Division,. CRAZY amount of money. -
Most of managing baseball in MLB is about how you handle relationships -- with everyone, the players of course, but your staff, the FO, myriad professionals covering/involved with the team. Baldelli is a very good communicator. He is calm, measured, fair and insightful,. This all comes across in his interviews and interactions with the media, and secondarily, through listening to the players and others associated with the team. Is he a good manager? Well, if the job is mainly about handling relationships, the answer is "yes". The in-game strategies, the line-ups, the decisions about pitchers coming in -- hate to say it, but that stuff is really secondary to how he shows up for all the other "stuff" he is responsible for. This is not a Billy Martin job anymore, coaching baseball. You can't just cuss and throw things around and bitch and expect that your team will respond. I have been impressed by how Baldelli handles all questions, gets to the guts of the issue and doesn't duck or obfuscate or blame others.

Twins Name Bailey Ober Game 1 Starter for ALDS
Old Twins Hat replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Houston's hitters are going to foul off a ton of pitches from Ober. A ton. Hope it works out. -
Fun day around the league. In Atlanta, the Braves actually had the lead and Washington was down to its last three outs, but they ended up scoring four runs in top of the ninth and pushing the game to the bottom. Without that, Twins HR record would have stood, maybe forever, who knows? Now we are left with the one record that transcends all sports: 0 for 18 in the playoffs. When the Twins break that jinx, if they break that jinx, the Baseball Gods certainly owe us something for these decades of misery. What will we get? Worth tuning in.

Why is that a good thing? Correa has been awful this year with RISP, runners on base, and with no one on base. His year is what it is. Hopefully the plantar fascitis is the principal cause and can be addressed over time. As it is, despite the performances of Buxton and Correa, the Twins are winning the division with depth, rookies and a good pitching staff. Not something I would have expected, but, good on them!

The Breakout Isn't Coming for Carlos Correa
Old Twins Hat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
All I can say is I hope Mr. Correa spends more time talking about "being hungry" for a playoff run then how sexy he feels hitting .217. -
I was at the game. Body language on the Pale Hose, Anderson, Graveman, Robert, just terrible. If those guys were on my team, I would just give up already. No life in them. At all. The ball Wallner hit off the right field wall, that was a bullet. Haven't seen a ball hit like that since Cruz was on the team. Terrible base-running by Wallner though. He's fast enough, just way too conservative. He and Gallo should spend more time together. You put saddles on those two guys, they could carry the team.

If you watch carefully , the fielder missed the short hop throw and the ball hits Buxton in the side of the face. He took a shot and got up slowly but it was the ball.

Who knows? Twins were not such a lousy hitting team last year, so, let's admit something up front: They've gone backward. Question is: Why? Or, better yet, how? Strike outs are the most obvious clue. They lead the league and are on pace to set a record. I know the stats heads don't overrate the value of Ks, but, still, if you go from middle of the pack to the worst ever, something must be going on, right? Are the players water bottles spiked by an insider? No real answers. But, why are the veterans the worst of the worst? Rookies, I can understand, but the veterans k'ing by the dozen every game? It's just, it's like a murder mystery> Who murdered the Twins ability to make contact with the baseball? What happened? This is an all-time great mystery: How does a team go from being mediocre at hitting to being one of the all-time worst? I don't know. Neither does anyone else. But whatever Popkins is doing, can I just say this out loud: It's not working!! Maybe being cerebral is overrated when it comes to baseball, He's great at analytics, but all it does is make the Twins hitters overthink it. Have some fun, hit the gaddamn baseball and run toward first. It used to be SOP, but now, for whatever reason, it's swing and miss and go back to the dugout. It might be funny, even hilarious if this were a last place team, like the '68 Mets, but no, it's the Twins, in a lousy division, trying to out-lousy the worst teams in the American League and likely succeeding. Who killed their ability to hit the ball?

Where Do the Twins Go from Here
Old Twins Hat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kind of perplexing: a first-place team yet completely unwatchable and cringe-worthy, let down by their veterans, leading the league in strike outs, while featuring a top-five starting pitching staff. There are no obvious moves to make. The Twins offense should be better, but they can't hit the ball, especially with runners on base, and particularly when they are in scoring position. There is nothing to be done but accept that something is terribly wrong with this team. It starts with Buxton, Correa and Kepler, but it doesn't stop there. Lewis and Polanco can't stay healthy, Baldelli finds new ways to lose games in the late innings and the idea that they might rally, at some point, string some hits together, get that big knock, you know, like score some runs, come from behind, is dashed over and over again. Can't love them; can we leave them at least? Just dreadful season. The worst division in baseball and we sit, hands folded, watching offensive ineptitude prevail, with no moves to be made and no one to hold to account.- 65 replies

Flipping the Curse Narrative
Old Twins Hat replied to Hans Birkeland's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The umps in New York have always favored the Yanks, that's just reality that must be accepted. However, the Twins' essential problem is on offense, and the fact they lead the league in Ks. Tell me the last time that a team that Ks more than all other teams finished in first place or made a run in the playoffs? Something gotta change because we are on the verge of being beyond a small sample size.- 11 replies

Not sure about Vazquez calling a great game. Duran throws 102 mph. Why again would you call for his first pitch of the inning to be a curve in the upper 80s? Not for my money. Make their best hitter see, feel and fear the high heat. Then throw the curve. Robert prolly thinks he hit Duran's fast ball. Was he guessing curve there?
