Looking for the SATIRE heading on this one. Only leads-off ONCE for sure. Slowest guy on the Team. Gotta ride him in the 9 spot and maybe he’ll get lucky and end up leading off an inning. He’s up to .225 on August 12 after being mired in the mid-.100’s for a big chunk of first 3 months. He’s actually been hitting pretty well since mid-June. Hit the very top of the wall on Sunday and another one off the base of the fence. Not completely missing fastballs anymore.

Looking over comments/posts while watching game Monday night. A little over reaction here but after watching Jeffers take strike 2 & strike 3 (fastballs) with guys on 1st & 3rd with 1 out…….I started wondering when the buzz might start here that Vazquez is the #1 Catcher on the club. I don’t think there’s any doubt that Vazquez is definitely a more valuable defensive catcher. He’s got considerably less power than Jeffers. However, Jeffers at .290 BA and Vazquez at .110 BA is long gone. As of this evening Vazquez is hitting .225 with 6 HR in 213 AB’s & Jeffers is hitting .228 with 17 HR in 307 AB’s. Don’t know the numbers clearly, but via eye test, Vazquez has been hitting effectively, & better than Jeffers, for nearly 2 months.

I get your slant about proving oneself before there’s real value…….but if all the guys in the system (maybe 120?) are prospects, talking about how 5 or 6 look to be the best, that fits with the % of guys coming out of Minors that are very successful, either with the Twins or ultimately in another organization. Gotta promote success of the Minors at some level.

Blewett is my assumption. It would be interesting to see him pitch. I can’t imagine his stuff wouldn’t stack up to Dobnak’s favorably……..with Okert due back & Varland added by the weekend for the 5th spot, both of these guys only have a few days left. To me, Winder earned a spot for the foreseeable future over his outings recently.

Week in Review: Persevering Through Pain
JD-TWINS replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I too think that the Twins have a good shot, probably can get things done to “make the playoffs”. Problem is health!!!! Pitching in rotation is thin, we all get that. How does the Team do well with Dobnak - Blewett - Richards as guys that need to perform in our Pen - that’s the really scary piece. Okert - Henriquez seem to be needed back in the 26 man very soon!- 21 replies

Week in Review: Persevering Through Pain
JD-TWINS replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Winder - 5 innings with no runs for the week……Sands has been very good 80-90% of the time - yesterday he gave up a broken bat single & a slow roller through the left side before a routine single in the gap ruled a double without much of a challenging effort by our LF……..Alcala - Jax - Duran. Filling those bottom 3 spots has been/is challenging, to your point! Okert will be back…….somebody has got to displace Dobnak fairly soon. Who saw Richards - Blewett - Dobnak as 3/8 of the Pen at any point in the season? Wow!! Paddack - Okert - Varland filling those spots by October or sooner would be a big help. Ronny Henriquez soon - sometime?- 21 replies

Reviewing the Jorge Polanco Trade
JD-TWINS replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Finally, a realist. Jorge was a long time Twin ……I get it……his past performance was clearly that, in the past. 105 games & 86 games over 2 seasons. He has had a worse year than Julien and Eddie can’t make our Big Club, even with Lee hurt & Farmer underperforming. This means Polanco’s about 5th in the line of guys eligible to play 2B for the Twins this year. He got his 11th HR yesterday - Julien had 7 HR by April 28th. Topa has done zero to improve his value so his salary through arbitration for ‘25 has to be very inexpensive. He’s back in ‘25 with decent potential. With just that potential, Twins win. Gonzalez - Bowen ……..maybe they never contribute at Target? A 20 year old evaluated in MLB top 100 prospects, even for a minute, is a worthwhile gamble. Freeing Polanco’s salary and netting enough to sign Santana, another singular move that makes the trade in Twins favor.- 63 replies

Pretty sure Lewis swung at first pitch after two consecutive walks - I don’t get that, no matter who the batter might be. 3 for 22 with RISP for the Series …… that’s all there is to point to for the losses. Saturday each Team has 4 hits - an extremely well pitched game. Gotta hit better with RISP if you want to be successful.

I thought about going completely off book and thinking it may be a good play for Castro to bunt………with all his skills, he is typically a terrible bunter! The last time he tried his finger got pinched between the bat & the pitched ball - that’s bunting faux pax 101! With his speed one would think he’d spend a little time in bunting to become at least average - he’s poor at this point. I do think if Castro gives himself up by bunting, Larnach has to be swinging away with guys at 2nd & 3rd. BIG risk even if Castro can bunt with a force at home - execution would have to be spot on with the bunt. Thielbar looked as good as ever Friday - didn’t see him this afternoon but I got the review, not good! Sands got paper cut to death (broken bat single - seeing eye grounder single) …….but Thielbar with a HR and then back to back walks, that’s not acceptable!!!

Festa has good enough stuff to be toward the top of a rotation in another year or two - very good stuff now - needs some seasoning. SWR …..20 starts with an ERA of 3.78 …….he has been seasoned. I see him as the #3 through the balance of the season. His pitches don’t have the “jump” of Festa’s fastball but he battles & battles and generally does a nice job getting guys out. IMO, not just in this post but generally, SWR should get a bit more respect for the job he’s done consistently. His FIP & ERA are only .01 points apart, so he hasn’t been lucky getting to this point.

Guardians 2, Twins 1: Cleveland Wins it Quickly
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Jeffers at 3B was a tough one to swallow - odd play. SWR & ENTIRE STAFF has been great this series 2, 3, & 2 runs over 3 games. Can’t ask for any better!! Hope Festa keeps them in game today. Lefty bats need to come alive today!!!- 45 replies

Twins 6, Guardians 3: Matt Wallner Conquers Apple TV+

Twins 6, Guardians 3: Matt Wallner Conquers Apple TV+
JD-TWINS replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Since June he’s hitting well over .320 v. LH pitchers. Going into the game he was hitting .319 v. LH pitching when leading off. I get the enthusiasm about Wallner - exciting to watch him in the box. His K rate since coming back is 36+ % …….this is while essentially only having him face RH pitching. The curiosity for what Wallner “might do” and suggesting you’ll wager on the OPS points is all great but it’s just supposition - it will remain supposition because try aren’t going to push Wallner out in front of LH pitching regularly. From memory, in his first 68 AB’s v. LH pitching over first 3 years he’s hit around .115. Wish thinking stuff or offering to bet on it doesn’t do anything for me personally.- 93 replies

Agreed! Sands has best K/Walk ratio on the Team & only Jax has a better WHIP….unsung hero…… Caleb looked very sharp!! 3 1/3 from those two were critical.- 93 replies

8 hits in 4 2/3 isn’t great …….if he just keeps pumping hard stuff away to Naylor it may have been only 5 hits through 5 innings? Team seems to be in love with getting burned throwing hanging off speed to lefties and watching it get pounded. ……..stay away and live with pitch to contact & get away from the “fantastic pitch” mentality. Duran has had same issues ……guys make bad pitches, but throw what you are able to command…..2 outs!!- 93 replies

How about Cole Sands……3.19 ERA ……44 games & 53.67 innings, with 61 K’s. Best K to walk ratio on the Staff & 2nd to only Jax with a .913 WHIP…….shut down the Guardian’s fifth inning and then cruised through the 6th. Very impressive.

Short lived. Seems they would stay heavy on relief arms to get through the K.C. series as Varland will have to take a regular turn in the rotation either Wednesday or Friday next week. Maybe Matthews is up to start Tuesday displacing a reliever …….then Varland replaces him the following day and slots into rotation going forward.
