    He’s not on the 40 man so his presence doesn’t really matter. He won’t be taking opportunities from real prospects.

    Yep but imagine the heater being 93 or whatever he throws plus some sort of legit breaking ball. I don’t recall any knuckleballers with that. That would be really fun to watch.

    Ironically after I posted this I opened the strib sports page to see there is an article about his knuckled. Twins catchers voted it most nasty of the spring. He’s got a bunch of other pitches- if a couple end up being mlb quality he could really be a unicorn as most knuckleballers have nothing else.

    Regarding the title: the Twins have a surplus of AA / AAA arms, not major league arms (yet). Players get weeded out at every level with the jump to the bigs being the most difficult. The Twins are in a good position of having several prospects that look close to being ready to make the jump but success is far from certain. If they hang on to the current “surplus” they will likely end up with just enough starting pitching.

    One of my favorite Puck stories involved Trombley. Trombley was sitting at his locker staring at his first big league check. Puck walks by and says “ first big league check eh kid?” Trombley said yea at which point Puck pulled out his wallet and said “want me to cash it?”

    Let me rephrase. I think hitters should have different approaches for different situations but this has to be used consistently so the hitter can be good at it. To pull out you contact swing once a week means you are likely not to be good at it when you need it. For me, there are situations where I can accept a strikeout no problem. Down by one, nobody on and two outs with a guy with legit power at the plate - go ahead and give it a rip to try and tie it. I don’t care about a strikeout here.

    Yea the pop up to short right that was in the air about 9 minutes and managed to fall in between Gasper France and Kiersey is not something I need to see again. That was quickly followed up by Bader air mailing a throw to a player that didn’t exist. It’s a real problem with this org.

    Couple of points. One is that adopting an approach of prioritizing contact is not something you can pull out of your back pocket once a week when there is a man on third and one out and the go back to swinging from your heels. Second, if strikouts are the ultimate outcome for pitchers then they HAVE to be the worst outcome for a batter. They are competing sides of the same coin. If the argument for a strikeout as a hitter is they didn’t ground into a double play then the double play is the ultimate best outcome for a pitcher which means they should pitch to weak contact to induce said double play. I’m not some old geezer that hates strikouts (they are boring) but you can’t logically make the argument that they are no worse than any other out.

    I hope Julien succeeds. I think we need a reset on expectations. In 2023 his babip was 373. Thats a huge dose of batted ball luck - there was bound to be regression. Plus the league had never seen him and his unusual approach; adjustments were made. I don’t think he is as bad as last year so we will find out where he lands. His defense will be a factor as the bar for hitting is going to be a little higher when you are mediocre at best with the glove. This is a story that has played out thousands of times - some guys make it, probably more do not. I hope Julien succeeds.

    Excellent article in the Strib today about the change in Larnachs off season training and approach. Larnach said that he had been coached to look to pull the ball hard all the time. Last offseason he trained with Torii Hunter and Matt Kemp who convinced him to stay back more, let the ball travel more and then hit it hard wherever. He now spends most of his BP hitting line drives the other way. Back to the future I guess. Makes you wonder how the prior approach has affected other Twins hitters. Also said he solved his turf toe by filing down the spike under his big toe.

    Total agreement. This rush to move athletic guys to first is asset mismanagement. The current problem is we need to develop another couple bats so there is somebody to move there is Miranda somehow fails.

    Glass half full: if Varland can find one breaking ball that works he could be a really good reliever. Glass half empty: Varland has been trying to improve his secondary pitches for years and hasn’t done it. It’s worth the effort because the right answer is different for each pitcher. Sometimes it’s to throw harder with less break, sometimes to throw slower with more break and all the options in between.

    I’m excited about Hill and I usually don’t get excited about prospects until they perform at AA. What I am excited about is he is a pick that has some ceiling. We seem to take a lot of high floor guys but this kid has some ceiling. His mechanics look simple and repeatable and his delivery isnt violent in an attempt to throw hard. Three good pitches already and he is just getting started. Now we just need patience and let him build himself up physically and hope for good health.

    To add on to this if you bring him up before he is ready you start the service time clock ticking. So between that and the 40 man factor I don’t see him up with the Twins this year barring crazy injuries.
