    I think this is an under discussed topic. The power is definitely a plus but really low OBP is a killer. We’ve got a few of these types and it’s probably a factor in the feast or famine nature of our lineup.

    I Wonder why they waited when it has been bothering him for 3-4 years? Hope it clears everything up but he will likely miss some off season work which isn’t ideal.

    CP was a great development for 26. However I would go with Taj as the best story. He went from borderline failure to our best starter.

    A major factor not mentioned is that Ryan at his new arbitration number is not nearly as valuable as before. There will be some surplus value but not nearly enough to get the haul some people expect.

    The premise of the article is strange to me. Brooks has been one of the most predictable players on the team. His scouting report when drafted has turned out to be quite accurate. Which was a contact hitter that won’t stick at short but should be good at third. Thats exactly what he is turning out to be. I would expect Brooks to be a fine third baseman as early as the middle of next year. His hitting has improved slightly year over year and I think with more strike zone recognition he can add some OBP to his acceptable power numbers. In short, if Brooks is your floor you have a good team; if he is your ceiling you ain’t going places. He has earned the right to be written in in pen for third next year.

    He has potential. A little better command and improvement to his change up would go a long ways. I also would not pay any attention to “earned” run stats. Official scoring is a joke now and the Twins miss too many plays on defense that end up causing problems for the pitchers. He needs to improve but that’s true of any young player. I’m excited to watch him pitch in the coming years.

    I think it’s interesting that in the title of the post it says you are “choosing” to be optimistic about TP. I don’t choose to be optimistic or pessimistic- I base those feelings on what I actually observe. Of course everyone gets to believe what they want - I’m not implying your choice is wrong. Right now I’m neither - the only meaningful data point to me was the decision hold on to Ryan, Jeffers, etc because they determined we were a potential playoff team. That was really poor judgment in my opinion but is one instance. I’m willing to keep an open mind going forward but to the things that matter to me he is 0-1 having swung wildly at a pitch out of the zone.

    Especially because if you ever do develop a surplus, pitching is the most valuable trade currency.

    I had them pegged for 75 or 76 wins so the answer is no. I like that we finally are moving in a new direction but am disappointed that we missed on opportunities to get value from Ryan, Jeffers etc. I’m really disappointed that the FO / ownership group didn’t have the vision or the courage to rip the band aid off sooner. That tempers my optimism for the future.

    Not impressed with Jenkins jumps or routes on two of those doubles. Buck gets the first one and maybe the second one too.

    Of the too many things in life that I worry about getting guys poached from our underperforming front office is about 92nd on the list. In fact it might help.

    Gomez was walking a tightrope the whole season and it caught up to him. Morris just doesn’t command his cutter or his change so teams eventually just waited on his fastball. If he can throw something over besides the heater he could be really good.

    I would offer Ober a 2 year $12 million deal. His role would be long man in the pen and spot starter. He’s easily better than the guys we’ve been running through the 7th and 8th spots.

    There are physical shortcomings and mental mistakes. They have improved their physical ability to play defense by moving some people and adding youth that can play D. I am interested to see what Shelton will do about the mental mistakes because they have been prevalent during the Falvey era.

    As others have noted, I’m afraid this means Zoll is being brought back.

    Preillip is really close to being a good pitcher. A little better command and a little better change up and we have something. Don’t understand the pitch selection with Morris. His fastball is his best pitch and they just went cutter / change over and over.

    To me the dollar amount isn’t that important. The free agent class is horrible so it doesn’t make any sense to spend money on players that don’t raise the ceiling. Jefferson would be a good target along with a couple good relievers. I would absolutely back up the Brinks truck if there was a power hitting first baseman but alas France doesn’t do it for me.

    In addition to crowding the plate he is a bit of a “diver” as the old timers would say. In other words he leans towards the lefty batters box as he swings. Once that motion is started he really isn’t able to get out of the way very easily. Not sure of the trade off on this equation.

    Too soon people……this is how it happens.

    Where he plays isn’t the issue for me. He has to hit first. If he doesn’t hit there is no place to play him except possibly a bench role.
