  1. I’m a little surprised at how many walks he is drawing. I think the advanced scouting reports will soon call for pitchers to challenge him more.
  2. I just don’t see an issue with what happened. The ball clipped the zone, just barely but it did. Perfect pitch. It would actually be unfair to the pitcher not to overturn it.
  3. Couldn’t agree more. One of the things this FO doesn’t do well is make decisive playing time decisions so you can find out what you have or don’t have. He’s 27, there are guys behind him, play him and find out.
  4. The premise is stupid. No matter where you set the boundary there are always going to be balls that barely clip said boundary. That is what the “black” on the plate represents. Perhaps the real problem is Royce didn’t perform.
  5. Yea sometimes when Royce gets a hit I have to doublecheck and make sure I’m not watching game 7 of the World Series.
  6. The Twins obviously don’t view it as an issue that demands an answer since this style of lineup construction has been their MO. Since this topic has been beaten to death on this site I will just say the Twins need better hitters period.
  7. Completely agree. He has been less rigid than Rocco. Another way it plays out is getting an extra out or two from the starter and then bringing in a reliever in a good matchup instead of insisting on the reliever coming in at the beginning of the inning.
  8. Good observations-I pretty much agree with all of them. At the beginning of the season I had three areas of concern: bullpen, defense and consistency of hitting. The defense has been bad and is not likely to improve without changing out players. The bullpen, somehow, is getting it done. Does Shelton deserve some credit here? The hitting is kind of what I expected - here today gone tomorrow. I think Martin is helping here as he’s getting on base a lot and stolen bases are helping too. I was hoping the change in managers would bring some accountability for mental mistakes and poor fundamentals but that hasn’t changed so far. As everyone knows the grind of a mlb season exposes everything so it will be interesting to watch it unfold. I’m taking it one game at a time and enjoying each game.
  9. Could not watch the game but happy for Lee. That guy could use a pick me up. I see that Orze threw 14 pitches - 12 for strikes. That’s a man after my heart. Did we play a clean game?
  10. Great topic - lots to respond to. The concept of a decision tree might work with a few players but not a lot. Wallner doesn’t even know the dead ball rule and he is going to effectively judge when game strategy calls for a challenge - don’t think so. Jeffers is really adept at it making his usage far more important than a hitter. I would treat it like stealing a base for the hitters. If you haven’t been given the green light you don’t challenge. That way the manager can decide who and when are the right times to challenge. From a game theory perspective there is almost no time a hitter should challenge at the beginning of the game. Lastly, each club keeps track of umpire tendencies so the catchers can really go to school on where the ump is likely to miss. Likewise, clever pitchers and catchers will note where a hitter has incorrectly challenged a call as it is a sure tell of a hole in the batter’s judgment. Not to pick on Wallner but I believe all his bad challenges have been on balls up in the zone.
  11. That bunt attempt was horrible. The proper way to bunt is to set the bat at the top of the zone. That way you only have to adjust the level of the bat one direction - down. If it’s above the bat it’s a ball. Then you are supposed to “catch” the ball with the bat, not jab at the ball. Well Lee set his bat at waist level and jabbed at it up which of course leads to a popup. The guy is really struggling on both sides of the ball.
  12. Martin beating that throw was huge. I couldn’t tell but he must have been running on that play? On the pick off I assume he just made a mistake but teams do sometimes have that as a play so it might have been intentional seeing as Buck was at third. In any event much more fun to watch than three true outcomes baseball.
  13. If we are talking Falvey I judge him by his entire body of work, not just one trade. Falvey did some good things and some bad things. Overall he was mediocre pretty much like his teams. Taj does provide a new, positive story line to follow which is great. He’s must see TV right now.
  14. Ober did his job. I thought speed was a big factor early in the game with Buck and Keaschall setting the tone - they don’t win that game without it. The bullpen got the job done somehow - Bandas line isn’t great but he had several balls on the ground that found holes. Man Fundy has some games ( a lot of games) where he has no idea where his pitches are going. One thing that is a constant - sloppy baseball. A couple errors in the infield and brain farts from Martin and Wallner. They showed Shelton in the dugout explaining to Wallner about putting your hands up on the dead ball. Mind boggling to me that he he is in the big leagues and doesn’t know the rule.
  15. I noticed this as well. Royce is pretty exuberant when he gets a hit which is fine I guess. Reminds me of Bud Grants rule against celebrating touchdowns “I want them to act like they’ve done it before”.
  16. Jeffers is fighting it back there tonight.
  17. If Jeffers is in a traditional crouch he smothers that ball no problem.
  18. I enjoy Keaschall with the bat more than the glove.
  19. Another bonehead play by a Twins player. You always take the dead ball there.
