  1. Yea I don’t get the premise either. Joe is trying as hard as he can - this is who he is. The only “tough spot” is an ownership / FO group that changes their organizational direction as often as a bad lefty reliever.
  2. Too much hyperbole in describing Royce’s abilities. He has legit power and he is running better which is good to see. He’s always been streaky so I am more than willing to wait until the end of the season and see how he ends up.
  3. I don’t recall seeing Kremer pitch before the trade. He has pitched well in his two starts. In his first start the pitch usage graphic didn’t even include a curveball yet he’s thrown some really good ones, especially to lefties. Happy for Martin - he had been really scuffling.
  4. Funny, I do the same thing. Similar backgrounds I guess or maybe Im old.
  5. I think this flexibility is the key to our great defensive play. Wait, we suck on defense? You would think somebody would connect the dots somewhere along the line. One of the basic tenets of SABR or modern analytics is to not make outs. Wouldn’t it make sense that the other side of the coin, ie not giving away extra outs would be equally valid? Part of the Twins problem was for the first part of Falveys tenure they drafted a lot of bad fielders and they are still recovering from that.
  6. This is very accurate. His swing is such that I think he will probably always be streaky but if he can manage more ups and fewer downs he will be productive. I especially agree that he still could end up at third base. Regardless he is playing a much more well rounded game.
  7. There is no question Ryan will be substantially less valuable after this season simply because his arbitration number will be substantial. In other words much less excess value in the contract. But the Twins FO obviously knew this so it’s not like they got fooled.
  8. I’ve been critical of Funderburk forever. He has really pitched well for about a month or a little longer. He throws way more strikes than before. Royce also made a couple of nice plays in the field - he could be a great fielding first baseman. The Twins might be the worst team in the league for cutoff plays and overall outfield plays. They so frequently over throw the cutoff man or throw to the wrong base it’s maddening. I don’t know what to do with Keaschall. I love his hustle and offensive profile but the guy is just lost in the field and his arm is really bad.
  9. Great article Seth. It’s easy to forget how damn hard it is to make the show and stay there. Sounds like he has the people skills to succeed in whatever his post baseball life offers up.
  10. Hope he keeps it up. We need difference makers in the lineup. I know this isn’t new age but I think he should go with the outside pitch more. Some doubles to right / center will get him some inside pitches which he really likes.
  11. I’m talking baseball smarts. He makes too many mental mistakes. He could be a rocket scientist off the field for all I know. Hence the term “baseball drawer”.
  12. If Keaschall sticks in the outfield then Martin needs to go. Martin is a better fielder but Keaschall is clearly a better hitter and baserunner. He is also several years younger. They are somewhat redundant and frankly, Martin is not the sharpest knife in the baseball drawer.
  13. I probably wrote that poorly. His issues last night were probably nerves and timing. He played some balls where his timing and footwork was off and resulted in plays not being made. They weren’t errors but were outs not recorded. The Brewers are a tough team to debut against because they have a bunch of guys that can really run and they hustle out of the box - I bet Culpepper was feeling that. The good news is you can see the guy is really athletic and has a really strong arm. His throws were noticeably stronger than any other Twins infielder. I think initial scouting concerns were range related but he’s one of those guys that could play deeper because of his arm strength. I bet in one month we will be very excited about him in the field. If Houston pushes him off SS he will be really good at second or third.
  14. The best part of this team is resiliency. They make mistakes but don’t quit. Speaking of mistakes, here is one way to reduce them: stop forcing Caratini into the lineup. It’s just not worth moving so many guys around. Culpepper has a strong arm which is a requirement to be a good SS but he looked rough in the field. I’m betting it was nerves and he will be better. Milwaukee is a tough team to debut against because they have a bunch of guys that can really run.
  15. Kind of a crazy game and I didn’t even comment on a certain fan in the first row keeping score.
  16. There are savvy ballplayers and then there is Austin Martin.
  17. KC has a strong arm. He’s looked nervous in the field which is understandable.
  18. Reminds me of the old George Carlin bit about “pre-boarding” an airplane. Does that mean you get on before you get on?
  19. Correct. Went away along with waiver trades after the deadline.
  20. Makes me wonder if teams talk about that. If we knew the Yanks would grab him and assume the contract it would be tempting
