I disagree with the notion that the Twins have extra pitching. They have a nice amount of pitching but right now I would rather have SWR, Paddack, Feata and Mathews than more prospects. It’s a long season and we are only in mid - May.

Woods Richardson optioned to St Paul
Linus replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I just hope this isn’t because the league has adjusted to him. My impression of him was a guy that mixed four pitches and was not predictable. I recently saw a pitch breakdown and he was throwing primarily fastball and slider. This is just my feeble memory but he isn’t a guy that can say here is my stuff, see if you can hit it. He has to mix things up and fool guys a bit. -
About that Miguel Sano "parody" article....

Generally speaking, I find the “funny” articles on TD to be not very funny. Usually sophomoric and predictable. Far, far fewer of these type articles would be an improvement to the site IMO. -
Twins 6, Orioles 3: Nine. Times.

Interesting that at the end of the game substitutions were made to remove Lewis for defensive purposes. Buck and Bader save runs with their gloves.- 21 replies

I’ve had similar thoughts- most pro leagues tend to be copy cat leagues. I guess the more flamethrowers there are would make guys like Coulombe more unique? In any event I enjoy watching pitchers getting outs with other methods besides velocity.

This is a fair take we have no idea what Keaschall will do when he returns. Seems we can count on some additional aggressiveness on the bases but hitting wise we would be wise to temper expectations.

Everyone in the lineup has question marks. For me they all have to contribute in some way most games. Whether that is a big hit or run saving catch. Where we get in trouble is when we have guys not hitting, making errors or outs on the bases. Thankfully the pitching should take some of the pressure off

More than anything the win streak means the season should be meaningful. For a while I was worried we were going to have to wait until next year. I don’t do research so this is from memory: the Twins seem to consistently underperform their expected win / loss record. First does anybody know if that is factually true and second how is that calculated? In other words what’s the missing link? Fielding, costly baserunning mistakes, etc?

I’m hopeful on the health front because prior to the plica surgery they could never really identify the problem. On e the plica surgery took place he has had much better health. Buck is always going to be streaky because he embodies the Twins hitting philosophy of try to pull and elevate everything. I think he has the strength and bat speed to still do damage if he took the outside pitch to right center. He had a ringing double the other day doing that. Anyway just so much fun to watch.

I think your observation about the defensive profiles of the guys they draft is an important point. In any event, they don’t have a strong track record of developing strong defensive players (who would be the strongest defender developed in the Falvey era?) so I’m not going to be one to have a lot of confidence in them in that area.

Well maybe that’s the crux of the issue. I guess you are right about leaving him there for a longer evaluation. My beef is that the Twins do not seem to possess the evaluation skills to recognize where a player is best suited defensively and make that decision well enough in advance to let them excel. Or it could be their practice to take every poor defender and try and make them more valuable with “versatility” meaning they are poor at multiple positions.

The Minnesota Twins Have a New Top 100 Prospect
Linus replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Long way to go but reason to pay attention. Having some idea with four different pitches at that age and some velocity plus being left handed? Yup. -
Alcala is not and has never been a high leverage reliever. It has nothing to do with how he has been managed or how his injuries have been taken care of. He doesn’t have command pure and simple. He’s going on 30 and he just isn’t that good. It happens- all the time.

I’m surprised to read the assessment of Amicks defense. Every scouting report Ive read is that Amick is a subpar fielder who stands little chance of playing third at higher levels with no defensive upside. Get him to first now in case he hits so he can be passable at one position. At this point the Twins need to give McCusker a look. Now is a great time with Wallner out. I’m sure the Twins have their internal assessments that apparently say he can’t do it in the bigs but I want to see him get a chance.

Week in Review: Rallying Back to Relevance
Linus replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Let’s enjoy the Dr Jekyll (or is it Mr Hyde?) period of the Twins offense and hope it lasts as long as possible. Will be interesting to see if another drought lies ahead or if the offense settles into a consistent mode. Ive never understood guys getting their rehab cut short when they aren’t performing at AAA. But here we are again with Lewis searching for his swing and full health while we are trying to win ballgames. Hat tip to the pitching staff. High expectations and they are meeting them.- 30 replies

You are skipping by the obvious and most true answer. Alcala is not that good - it has nothing to do with his usage or chemistry or any other factor. He gets hurt - lots of guys get hurt it’s part of baseball and is rarely someone’s direct fault. This fact is you are not going to carve out some special role for a bottom of the bullpen pitcher. He’s closer to dfa than an important bullpen spot.

No question all three are exceeding most people’s expectations. I look at the France acquisition differently. Bader and Coulombe were / are complimentary pieces. First base is supposed to be a key offensive position; one where you can go with a real slugger who may be limited in other areas. That we don’t have a real slugger for that position and have to have France there indicates a development failure. And nothing against France he is playing to the best of his abilities but this is one of the prices we pay for not developing players well enough.

What good is Alacala if he can pitch one inning every other day? He’s at the bottom of the pecking order not a critical performer to win games.
