  1. The Twins have been a PR nightmare for a long time. This episode falls right in line with that history. You know the old business saying “know your customer “? They don’t.
  2. There is a way forward to be successful relatively quickly but it will require some out of the box thinking and a couple of astute trades. Those two requirements may deem this impossible but here goes. If the Twins have a surplus of talent it would be pitching and they need a couple of bats badly. So deal López for a good cost controlled bat, preferably an outfielder who is athletic, can play defense and doesnt need to be platooned. Trade Larnach and and a prospect (maybe Julien?) for a bat first first baseman. With this new outfielder and Keaschall in the lineup we now have some speed and athleticism. With Pablo’s salary gone we should be in a stable position to hang onto our younger players through arbitration and maybe extend a couple. Now for the out of box thinking: grab your 15 best pitchers regardless of current role. The first 5 are your starters, the next two go to St Paul for the depth you will need at some point. The next 8 go to the pen. It’s Maki’s job to get enough innings for the younger guys that they could still stretch out and start later in the year if needed or next spring training. Think Abel or Bradley for example. This is a team that could be competitive next year and really good in a couple years. When / if Em Rod or Jenkins need a spot Wallner DH s or is traded. Lee gets SS until Culpepper is ready.
  3. Tough one. Greenes grab at the wall on Buck was a huge play. Julien had a really nice - made a couple nice plays at first.
  4. I think the difference between teams like the Twins and teams like the Brewers or Rays isnt some secret sauce formula. If we know what they are doing all the teams in baseball know. It comes down to executing a plan based on excellent player evaluation and development combined with sound strategic decisions. Our FO / ownership group isnt in the same league with those other teams.
  5. Nothing would make me happier than the Pohlads having to write Buck a big fat check
  6. I’m disappointed but not surprised. I think the Pohlads were sincere in their desire to sell at their price. Short of that they weren’t going to accept anything less. Perhaps they realized that they could field a competitive younger team that doesnt require even an average payroll. López might as well start researching realtors as he’s a goner. The worst part is that now Falvey is here for the long haul. You know do the same thing and expect a different result.
  7. Kind of misleading to compare a guy who is a legit SS and a guy who will likely play 2nd base. And that is not a knock on Keaschall just being real.
  8. This lineup needs a jolt and the two obvious places to do it are LF and 1st base. If they run Larnach back and hand first to Clemens I will consider it a failure (Clemens can be a utility guy). I’m also hopeful they will be able to raise the quality of the pen to the point where Funderburk is not a part of it
  9. It would seem like job one is to square up the ball with elevation. Presumably bat speed doesnt do much good with poor contact.
  10. I think he is misjudged a bit due to his size. He’s got good speed and good hands with a really strong arm. He’s not going to look “typical” because few players are as tall as he is that play the infield. Ive seen him make some plays that no other Twins SS can make. He’s a unicorn for sure.
  11. Thanks for this article. Lots of info. Royce has improved in the field. I don’t really trust fielding metrics but even something as basic as no throwing errors is illustrative. I would deem him average and hopefully he goes up from there. As others have pointed out he has to hit.
  12. Agreed. I am not hopeful of improvement in the running game. I think he understands that his speed is an asset but his instincts and understanding of situational baseball are not good leading to mistakes.
  13. Keaschall is something. The Twins really stole one today. Austin Martins speed might be the most wasted asset on the club. He can’t run the bases or efficiently track a fly ball. He does look better at the plate.
  14. In what world does Larnach have a corner outfield spot “covered”? He’s a league average hitter protected via platoon that is slow and plays subpar defense all in a premium offense position? LF and 1st base are the low hanging fruit for giving this lineup a jolt.
  15. That swing certainly looked powerful and he has years to mature as a hitter. All I know is somebody has to provide a jolt to the big league lineup in the next year or so and maybe he will be it.
  16. I guess I will join the chorus of having seen enough of Gasper. He’s not part of the future so let’s take a look at someone else.
  17. I said balls generally hit to him. I didn’t mean to imply that he was covering one step each way. I was actually complimenting him in that turning balls into outs reliably is a valuable skill.
  18. I think that is accurate. If you hit it generally to him he will turn it into an out
  19. Houston is probably a no doubter with the glove but people shouldn’t get too far over their skis - the bat could be a problem.
  20. I think in many respects he is exactly what he was projected to be when drafted. A stretch to play SS but probably a good third baseman. He’s lagging with the bat for sure but he was projected to be a contact oriented hitter who might develop 15+ homer power which he may well do over time. He was always a high floor low ceiling kind of pick. If people were expecting an all star the problem lies in their expectations.
  21. Some interesting baserunning that inning. Hopefully won’t matter.
  22. One of the silver linings to a lost season is being able to do things like this. I would do the same thing with the lineup. No more “guessing” if so and so can make it in the bigs. Our “guessing “ track record leaves something to be desired - let the players show you the answer. In the long run I’m with @Riverbrian I want to see the best pitchers pitch the most innings however that looks - forget about the labels. If Prellip is a stud for 4 innings then have him pitch 4. Don’t arbitrarily turn him into a 1 inning guy because that’s the traditional role. I also want to ditch this idea that if a young pitcher is in the pen for a year or two that their starting development is hindered. Way too many examples of this happening successfully (see Johan Santana). I actually think our pen could be filled with some of these young pitchers with promise - can’t be worse than the pens we have had filled with castoffs and rejects. Again by doing this the young pitchers will show you who is a potential starter, who is a reliever and who is AAAA.
  23. Being an above average SS in the bigs is really hard. Most of the guys that get drafted as a SS never have a chance to truly make it there and their teams know it - they just want the athleticism. Scouts accurately judged Lee from draft day on - he doesn’t have the speed quickness nor throwing arm to be more than passable. He does have the have soft hands and instincts so he would be a good third baseman if he hits. So we are dreaming and hoping on Culpepper but buyer beware he still has to prove it at AAA and the bigs so no guarantees. I want to be excited about Houston because a slick fielding SS is fun to watch and cements a good infield. He’s hitting a little now but that is in low A and he is an older college guy so I think his bat will be in question.
  24. Wow. That’s quite a trip. That’s enough windshield time to figure out the meaning of life.
  25. I am starting to question Martins baseball IQ.
