    I was never in favor of the Correa signing just like I disliked the Donaldson signing. with the way the Twins operate it’s just too big a chunk of their payroll to be able to field a complete team. I also wanted them to let Royce play short so you can be wrong and right at the same time 😀

    That 9th says it all. There is plenty to criticize Rocco for but for me the number one thing by far is how horrible his teams are in the basics. I honestly hope there are bats destroying coolers right now and Julien should be on the first bus to St Paul. Roden sure looks like a good get - not.

    You read my mind. The lineup needs a shake up and if I could get a young bat (either first or corner outfield) Thats could contribute next year I would consider trading Festa. I have no idea if that player (and trade partner) exists. And who knows maybe it’s better to keep Festa and deal Jax for that bat.

    As always a thought provoking post. I like Matthews better both currently and for upside. I like his fastball better and his command is better. Festa seems to leave a few too many fat pitches out there. Sometime he gets away with it sometimes they get hammered. Glad to have both for the future. Would anyone consider trading either of them for a bat?

    Yup. I remember reading a scouting report when he was drafted which said “no chance of Lewis sticking at short because he lacks big league instincts “. Sure looks accurate about now.

    Royce is not a good fielder. As a 1/1 draft pick, he is entering bust category.

    No question - if you are developing players all things are possible. Want to trade a prime mlb player? You can do it because you have someone ready to take his place. Need to supplement your roster with a big leaguer? You’ve got prospect capital to make the deal. If you are not developing players none of this is possible. I guess I’m preaching to the choir here. Why don’t the Twins show faith in their prospects? My guess is they have determined they aren’t good enough which says volumes about the things down on the farm.

    I am with you that some teams have different plans. Where we disagree is that I believe all the FO are aware and choose differently, in other words they don’t agree with your assertion that there is one “best” plan. Maybe they are wrong and you are right. I simply believe the decisions made by a respective FO are the most important factor which is why so many FO people are poached from the teams you reference. FWIW I’m in agreement with you on the importance of prospects and prospect development as the key to success. Anyway Ive said my piece and won’t take it any further.

    That’s my point. Everyone is aware of what is going on. So they are choosing to do what they deem best or they are just better at executing the strategy they chose.

    So if the strategy is the difference that implies the other small or mid market clubs are unaware of what the Rays et al are doing. Don’t find that plausible.

    I appreciate the detailed profile on him. Nice to know something about him if he is called up, which I honestly hope isn’t necessary.

    The difference between the Twins and Rays or Guardians or any other small / mid market successful team isnt some secret sauce philosophy. The difference lies in their success rate in making player personnel decisions - they just execute FO duties better. Fwiw - as long as we have Correa (and Buck to a lesser extent) you have to be in win now mode. It makes no sense to do a rebuild with an older SS making $35 million per year. Ergo, I’m trading every expiring contract and Larnach as we have to infuse some athleticism into the roster at 1 base and a corner outfield spot during the off season.

    Could be but we don’t know about Keaschall in the field either. One of the frustrating things about sorting out the path going forward is how many questionable fielders we have.

    If he’s not fully healthy then it’s tough to make a judgment. If he is healthy and the league has adjusted to him Thats a more concerning issue. Another aspect of his play that is concerning is his defense. He looks unconfident to me; Lee looks much better to me at the hot corner yet the Twins continue to cater to Royce. I hope he snaps out of it. However at some point the Twins can’t wait around for him. To me his logical positions going forward are second base, first base and left field and I’m not sure about second base.

    Spot on. There has to be some observational judgement baked into the equation. A simple example might Margot pinch hitting. The sample was small so they kept running him out there believing the pinch hits would come which of course they never did.

    I believe what we see is them adhering to sample sizes in their decision making. They aren’t going to change their plan until the sample size is large enough for them to trust. Sometimes this is correct but it frequently makes them slow to react.
