  1. When you're on a winning streak, every win is a good one. Any way to keep it rolling is awesome. The bats were slow to get going, but ended up putting up 6. The bad luck with RISP from earlier in the season (when the Twins were almost unfathomly bad) is evening out. Work some walks, get some hits, pile up some runs. Not the best outing from SWR, but he wasn't terrible. Still threw strikes. Bullpen had some wobbles too, but you can't expect them to shut everyone down every night. I mean, Sands has been awesome this season, but presuming he was never going to give up another dinger was unrealistic. But great to have Duran back; he seems ready to roll. They've already won the series, on the road. Would love to see another sweep and push this streak to 10!
  2. I think this is about right, but I do think there's more available for Martin as a hitter: I think he'll be able to increase the batting average and continue to grab walks (and he also showed in the minors that he's not afraid to stand in and get plunked, either). But he needs to keep working on some things, finding ways to punish mistakes, and improving his defensive skills in the OF. He's the obvious choice to send down right now with Margot on the roster, and Larnach and Miranda playing well. I do still think he can be a quality MLB player for us, especially with his speed and baserunning. He didn't sink when he came up and that's a good thing.
  3. Wouldn't be my first choice, but Stewart is probably available and I suspect they knew Duran was coming off the IL. I'd also rather have Alcala up than Jackson or Bowman, but I understand why they're trying to keep the depth up. With Duran back we're fine, but any time you have a couple of close games in a row we're going to be stretching the bullpen a little and needing someone we'd rather have only throwing middle relief/lower-leverage spots get some higher impact work. Bullpen has been really good so far this season. Thielbar has been the "worst" and he seems to be settling back in after a rough start. Jackson's the next "worst" and he hasn't been exactly bad, more just kind of another guy. It's going to be great to have Duran back.
  4. Martin has options, so cutting Margot means dumping a veteran under 30 with a solid track record by the end of April. not too many teams make that move. And while Margot has been unplayable against RHP, his .733 OPS against LHP has been fine. Note in fairly similar amounts of playing time Martin and Margot have been about as productive overall...and neither has been great. (-0.5 bWAR) I love Martin and I've kept the faith on him, but he still has things to work on. He wasn't getting on base like he needs to and his defense wasn't exactly elite either. It's probably just small sample size, but he wasn't hitting LHP worth a damn, and that's where the Twins likely need that 4th OF bat to be with Kepler back and Larnach playing well enough to demand time. Margot was doing what he had been predicted to do: hit LHP reasonably. Margot may be washed as a player, but this isn't a guy who is in his mid to late 30's, so a little more time is warranted, especially since some of the underlying stats suggest he's been a little unlucky so far. If he's still trash at the plate in June, maybe we look at moving on, but we don't have that much depth that's ready to play in the OF, and certainly not a lot that's proven, so if Kepler or Buxton go down for extended amounts of time things could get very thin the next time someone rolls an ankle. I prefer to take chances on younger players over veteran retreads, but Martin hasn't blown the doors off and maybe it's a little early to spend our depth and decide that a guy with 63 PAs is for sure done. With Larnach playing well, Kepler being back, Buxton being healthy and Jeffers getting more time at DH, the 4th OF spot isn't going to get tons of time. Seems reasonable to give Margot another month or so to see if his bat can come around. Martin will be back.
  5. Would you prefer to throw away last night's game in order to save pitcher's for today's game? Pretty sure Rocco gets buried for that, so guess there's no way for him to win. Jax faced the top of the lineup in the 8th and Thielbar came in with 2 lefty hitters on tap for the 9th. Seems perfectly fine usage, Tight game and a good win with quiet bats. Ryan came out slow but really settled down for a good outing on a night when he wasn't getting the usual levels of K's. Nice to see the team turn a couple of double plays behind him.
  6. Looking forward to getting Duran and Correa back to add some star power to the roster. Hoping that SWR can hold down the 5th starter role while Varland corrects things in AAA. If the offense has really gotten back into a groove, I think we're going to see the team a lot of us thought this would be. Julien is looking good again, Kirilloff has been quality, and Jeffers has been carrying the load. Miranda has impressed in his return and Castro has gotten himself back on track. If Santana and Farmer are back to being their usual selves, that'll be a big deal against LHP going forward. And if last week's Buxton is going to roll like this for a while... They've survived the injuries reasonably well. Be great if they can keep rolling against the ChiSox, who showed signs of life this weekend.
  7. Baseball's a funny game, ain't it? I mean, the sorry, no-account ChiSox just swept Tampa. Which is why I don't care who we're beating as long as we're winning. A sweep is a sweep: it's awesome no matter who it's against. Heck, I'm happy any time my team wins a series on the road, because if you're doing that consistently you're probably a dang good team. Wish Lopez could have gotten through the 5th with less damage; he does have some of those "what the hell?" innings where he's absolutely rolling and then it goes sideways. But he survived it and left with a lead. Even better, the offense responded again and piled on 4 more in the 7th. And the offense sure was hitting today! Jeffers is just a beast right now: he's hitting everything, and getting that offense from your catcher is a huge advantage, and him being able to DH for us with guys injured is great too. (doesn't hurt that Vazquez is looking much better at the plate) Really happy to see Farmer bust the slump. Miranda also makes not having Royce a lot easier too. Bullpen did the job too. Keep it up!
  8. I don't disagree: I think I would prefer they ban position players from pitching. it was no big deal when this happened a handful of times a season, but a handful of times by May? Blech.
  9. I don't think it makes any sense to try to convert Duran back to the rotation on the fly this season. We'd be trying to get him stretched out in his remaining rehab assignments and asking him to get back to starting midseason after not having made a start in 3 years? Seems like a recipe for failure, especially for a player that has had injury issues in the past and was moved into the bullpen in part because of concerns about his ability to stay healthy. He's converted successfully into one of the most dominant relievers in baseball. Whipping a change because we don't have significant depth for the rotation seems like a massive risk. And while no one is thrilled that Varland needed to go back down, SWR has been more than acceptable so far...so why exactly would we bump him from the rotation in favor of taking a moonshot on Duran in the rotation? Just to have depth? Nah. Let SWR cook. Get Duran back as the best fireman in the business, shutting down the best part of the opposition lineup late in the game.
  10. I feel like if they're going to throw an outfielder on the mound you should look to add some runs and punish the other team for quitting. Ensure that last bats are irrelevant. Angels are mad that Jeffers hit a dinger? Maybe they should have put in a real pitcher instead of a guy throwing less than BP.
  11. I like Winokur and he's an interesting prospect, but I'm definitely concerned about his Ks. He's also only at 5 BB on the season, so he's got to improve his ability to control the strike zone. Yes, it's a more difficult hitting environment, but he's also swinging at everything.
  12. Nice to have a bit of a laugher driven by the offense hitting the ball all over the place. Jeffers and Julien are rolling right now, and it's good to see guys who were slumping get well. Paddack could have been better, but he chewed up 5. To my mind he's still the 4th starter on this squad, and he's been good enough coming back from a significant injury. We'll see where he is in a month or so. Didn't love seeing Hicks lobbing balls in to close out the game. Even after tightening up the rules, it still looks unprofessional. And teams are all carrying 7 or 8 bullpen guys now, so come on. Just don't care for it. 6 game winning streaks are nice!
  13. I thought the plate ump was poor last night, it just happened to work out well for the Twins. I mean, i guess he was at least consistent at calling pitches 4-6 inches off the plate on one side strikes? I don't know how much credit Vazquez should get for "framing" those, but it was one of those games. But I dislike it when obvious balls are called strikes even when it rings up a K for the Twins.
  14. Well, I guess we'll see if this strategy works? (they sure aren't pushing it to 60 for Raya, though) I understand about the concerns related to injury for pitchers, especially starters. But much as I don't want to see anyone's arm get wrecked by throwing too many pitches in the minors and avoiding having guys keep throwing after a high stress inning certainly makes some sense...I do worry that we're putting guys in a position where they never learn how to work through 6+ innings and get through an inning without max effort on every single pitch. It's a little disheartening to see a supposed top prospect like Raya in AA and still getting pulled after 45 pitches or so. It's one thing for Soto at not even 19 and down in low-A and another for Raya at 21 in his 3rd pro year at AA. JMO. But it's still early, so maybe they're going to work him up more as the season goes along. (and they hopefully know a heck of a lot more than me about this)
  15. He'll need to get something out of a breaking ball this season if he's going to stay effective; it's been his biggest challenge over his career: finding that 3rd pitch to keep hitters from keying on his fastball. Even if his velocity on the fastball is up, he can't just be a 2-pitch guy, so figuring out whether it's the curve or the slider is going to be important. The start against Balto was pretty awful, but there's been some things to like in the other starts (the one against CWS was quite good). He's got to be less hittable, though: 12.9 H/9 is going to get him bashed around, and it's not like it was just the Balto game skewing the sample. The velocity is encouraging, and the HR rate is doable. trade a few of those hits for Ks and he'll be cooking, but I think he'll need a sharper breaking ball to get there.
  16. Ober was very good last night. no-hitter through 5! Great to see him get through 7 on a night when the bullpen needed some relief. He's a good pitcher and seems to be in a pretty good groove: only 11 hits and 4 runs allowed in his last 4 starts. And because I'm 13 at heart, his last 3 Game Scores have been: 69, 69, 69. lol I'd still like to see the lineup generating some more free passes, but they're finding grass right now when they put the bat on the ball and they're not flailing away, so I'm ok with it. been some good baserunning in there too. Bowman definitely wobbled out there; 3 walks is not getting it done, but against the Angels they got through it. To quote the great Eppy Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh: "I looove winning, man! You know? Like, it beats losing?!?"
  17. I don't are who you're playing, taking all 4 from any team in MLB, even a rotten one like the ChiSox is good work. SWR got the job done, which is great. nice to see the ball flying out of the yard, especially for Julien who is hopefully getting himself back on track. 10 hits, 2 walks, 5 HRs, 6 runs? I'll take that. It's only a handful of games so far, but nice to see Larnach doing some work. Jeffers absolutely the stalwart this season.
  18. Keaschall seems to be rolling right along. saw he got CF duty, anyone know how he looked out there? I'm glad to see him getting regular time in the field, be interesting to see how much time he spends in CF this season.
  19. Farmer looks completely lost at the plate right now. Just a brutal slump. I don't think he's completely forgotten how to play baseball or had his skills utterly wiped out by age yet, but right now he's so far inside his head that he desperately needs some kind of reset. If Correa were back I'd say it's time for the 10 IL stint with a "sore back". Maybe some naked BP. Throw yourself in the laundry machine with your uniform on. Call in someone to cast out the demons & evil spirits (I know a guy, Kyle!). Anything to get him out of his head. This is painful, and he's a good dude. The dingers from Ryan are concerning, but as long as he's not putting guys on in front of them, it can be managed. But that's a bit of a tightrope. He's still getting plenty of K's, so it's pretty clear that he just gets punished hard for his mistakes. But he still got through 6. Bullpen has been good. We thought it would be a strength and they're doing well. Bowman...the results have been good, but some of the underlying numbers make me a little concerned. Stewart and Jax, though: no worries there. Looking forward to adding Duran back to the mix so they don't get overused though.
  20. He's a very interesting prospect and I'm intrigued that he's working with looks like a 5 pitch mix at his age and level. a lot of young pitchers start out with a fastball and maybe 1-2 off-speed pitches and they really spend a lot of time trying to add an effective 2nd/3rd pitch as they go through the organization. I think it's a little more unusual to be working with 5 at this level, but it does present opportunities to refine and remove pitches later as they discover what's most effective for him. Glad to see him working in A-ball and he'll be fun to track as he progresses. Lot of talent.
  21. Twins seem to be pretty high on De Andrade; I'll be interested to see if he can hit enough as he keeps moving up in the organization. Cespedes is having an excellent start to the season at Cedar Rapids. He's a little old for the level, but it is his first experience at high-A, so maybe this is a breakout opportunity.
  22. Lopez having a rough game against the ChiSox was the worst part about this game. We need him to be good and he wobbled pretty badly against a team he could have gotten well against. Hopefully it's more about the weather than anything else, because we're a bit thin in the rotation with Varland having been (deservedly) sent down. Offense scratched it through late, but the lack of walks in this one is the bad signal for me. 14Ks against 1 BB is not a good formula, but they were able to bunch their 10 hits together enough to get it done. Larnach is certainly seizing his opportunity, which is good to see and Buxton looks like he's heating up as well. And Jeffers certainly has picked up where he left off from last season, which is huge. Hopefully they can hold it together until Correa and Lewis get back. Sands seems to have found something this season. Still small samples, but he really does seem legitimately better. Okert & Jackson have been underwheming but it's still early. Funderburk got it done, but I'm a little concerned about how hittable he's been. the big K numbers aren't as impactful when you're also giving up a hit every inning; hopefully that's just sample noise. No style points, but a win is a win and we're not in a position to question how we're getting them right now. It's not like you get extra credit in the standings for making it pretty! Bet parking was a mess last night with the Wolves playing at the same time across the street.
  23. Yes, it's the ChiSox who are awful. But even jaw-droppingly, historically dreadful teams win 30% of their games so you have to take them seriously and beat the team in front of you. It was very nice to have a easy win. Paddack did the job very well, kept the ChiSox locked down. The changeup has always been good, but the fastball seems to be holding that additional velocity and the curveball has been better this year. Hopefully this is a start he can build on. Good job by the offense jumping on the ChiSox early and keeping it going. Is Max Kepler back? Be interesting if he's the catalyst
  24. Doncon is really raking to start the season. While I don't expect him to stick at SS, if he keeps this up that bat will play wherever he lands in the infield. Good to see Schobel and Winokur getting going. Keaschall is having a terrific start to the season. He looks really good so far. I'm really impressed with the 12-9 walk to strikeout ratio. He's also doing making good contact and doing damage when he swings. Not bad at all. He stays on this track and he'll be in Wichita this year for sure.
