  1. In 2023 the Twins defeated Toronto in the wildcard round. The Twins were considered by many to be the better team. The Twins only two seasons later, are now one of the worst teams in MLB while Toronto is one of the top seeds in the playoffs. The Twins squandered their opportunity to build on a pretty solid base. They did so it seems almost by intent. All the talk of strategic plans for emerging as a contender in 2028 or some predetermined season in the future are a crock to try to paper over their salary dump and sustained inability to create a winning franchise.. The Twins ownership isn't truly interested in winning. As further evidence: My goodness how about Falvey's comment that he "hopes" they can keep Lopez and Ryan. How does the main decision-maker not know what the status is for their two best pitchers who are under contract? What a total mess.
  2. Excellent point - Falvey is mostly responsible for the mess that the Twins have become. Why on earth should he be permitted to lead the effort to clean up the mess? He shouldn't be, it's that simple. It's just the way things usually work in professional sports.
  3. Agreed Rocco seems to be a quality person, but the on-field results are what they are.
  4. Sports teams including MLB teams get what they deserve - wanting it doesn't have much impact on results. A MLB franchise that routinely makes suspect decisions in player acquisition, is hugely inconsistent in player development, often displays a lack of competitive toughness, doesn't seem tø emphasize solid fundamentals and is generally not willing to spend deserves to lose 90+ games.
  5. Agree with your basic premise - it's not easy to successfully transition from another position to 1B. But it has been done - Ernie Banks, Albert Pujols and Paul Molitor are HOF level players who quickly come to mind who made the switch. I am sure there are many others of lesser note.
  6. Talk about a mixed metaphor! (But I agree with the sentiment.)
  7. I understand that the theme here was position players. Maybe I missed something, but how can the Twins hope to contend without a decent bullpen? The premise that the Twins will have a "plus staff" is at best questionable.. (Are we certain the FO won't trade Ryan and/or Lopez?) Which current members of the BP can likely be counted upon in high leverage situations?
  8. Buxton would have leverage if the Twins' leadership was acting at all like they care about winning, but it doesn't appear they do. I applaud Buxton for speaking up and not just accepting the miserable status quo that envelops the Twins. The Twins are in a self-imposed free fall. It's a mess that only intelligent, assertive, focused moves to improve the team's chances will be able to turn things around in the next year or two. I don't see there being much of a possibility given the silence coming from the FO. Sadly, Buxton will likely be traded when he accepts he can't really change the dynamic drowning the Twins - he would be wise to accept a trade to a real contending centered organization. Meanwhile, the Twins will eventually admit through their actions that yes a massive "rebuild" is in process, market the young stars of the future, slash payroll and field teams without much chance of success. I really despise being this grim, but I just can't see any real silver linings in this situation.
  9. You get what you pay for and you don't get what you don't pay for. The Twins seem to emphasize the latter.
  10. The Theory that Bull Pens matter little to non-contending teams is being challenged as the Twins transform into the worst team in MLB led to the bottom by an utterly dysfunctional BP. The team looks far from a contending team. What are all these failures doing to the culture of the team especially given it's youth? Success in Sports is in part a mindset - so is failure.
  11. The Twins have already begun executing some plan - whatever it is from their perspective (Total rebuild, short term reset, salary dump/lowering expectations, some hybrid of options). We'll have clear evidence by what they do this winter with Lopez and Ryan. My confidence that the Twins will be a legit contender in the short (2026) to medium term (2027-2028) is not particularly high given the track record of the Twins decision-makers over the past decade or so. I will hope to be pleasantly surprised. by how it plays out.
  12. If the Twins trade for prospects for Ryan and/or Lopez I am dubious that any of the prospects they get in return ever performs at the levels that Lopez and Ryan do. How does a consistent cycling of trading of valued, performing MLB players (seen as "assets") for more prospects ever get the Twins into a consistent contender mode? Isn't generally a successful reset like this premised on maintaining a core to build around? Current MLB performing core pieces: Buxton, Ryan, Lopez, Jeffers...who else - Lewis? So the Twins are going to become a contender by moving the 2 upper end starting pitchers? I just don't see the logic behind this beyond the generic view of "that's how small/mid market teams do it" - don't the specifics of of the Twins roster factor heavily in the approach chosen to improve? Are we sure this isn't just a way to hide a salary dump?
  13. Great analysis and effort to characterize Wallner as a hitter. I, being more simplistic in my ability to quantify performance see it like this - Wallner strikes out too much in general and especially when it matters most.
  14. Well presented article for sure, but I would suggest that the central problem with the core may not be development as appears to be the main thrust of most comments. The player evaluation process has to be questioned in a big way when this many so-called raw talents are failing - perhaps this collection of players were mis-evaluated and simply aren't as good as they were projected to be?
  15. Well presented article which shows a likely pathetic and predictable salary dump by the Twins going forward.
  16. "Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things..." So there is that; the Twins and their fans can hope for many, many pieces to fall into place and they become a contending team in 2026.
  17. All teams have a culture that reflects their values, history,, communication, interactions and behaviors. Not all players thrive in the same. cultural standards, but typically the cultural norms for the group are most influenced by the coaches, core players and vets. (Who the team needs most to produce.) My experience is most championship teams reflect confidence and mental toughness as values. The softer players often will simply have to adjust or be replaced. They behave like champions before they become championship contenders. Are the Twins given their up and down, lack of fundamentals and lack of attention to detail mode have not developed the traits of a championship culture.
  18. The owner says we want to win. Everyone wants to win - what are you willing to do to maximize your chances? Since 1995 (30 seasons seemed like a nice round number) here is a quick breakdown of World Series appearances: Yes, it is only one metric but if you want to win... Three of More Appearances: Yankees, Guardians, Redsox, Rangers, Astros, Braves, Giants, Cardinals, Phillies, Dodgers One-Two Appearances: Angels, Chisox, Tigers, Rays, Royals, Marlins, Padres, Mets, D-Backs, Rockies, Cubs, Nats No Appearances: A's, Bluejays, Mariners, Brewers, Orioles, Pirates, Reds, TWINS UGH
  19. I don't get why the current FO which constructed the current Twins and subsequent teardown are to be trusted with yet another Twins' reset? (Even if they adopt a Brewers mindset.) I also don't understand the fascination and overhyping of teams that thrive in the regular season but consistently fail in the postseason? Twins 0-18 streak of postseason futility comes to mind. They made an entertaining movie out of Moneyball but how many World Series did those A's win?
  20. Gonzales is an interesting prospect. He is showing signs of being potentially a big-time force at the plate. Sure seems like the Twins lineup has plenty of room for such a hitter.
  21. Putting aside the fan - Varland connection the trade is really speculative and suggests a risky bet on upside. Is Roden currently better or likely to be better than Larnach, Wallner, Rodriguez, Jenkins etc? Falvey stated clearly he expected Roden to be an "everyday" OFer. He is going to have surpass some highly regarded prospects and some other players who have done some positive things at the MLB level. Rojas is yet another young pitcher with significant promise apparently, but how many of them actually succeed? Varland was actively proving his value to the Twins during this season and had the possibility of even more upside potential as an elite RP. This risk also seemed to be a rushed last minute move even by Falvey's description. I don't like this trade regardless of the local angle. (But I do hope Roden and Rojas prove to be outstanding Twins.)
  22. The Twins have lowered payroll in these moves and the probable off-season trade of. Pablo Lopez will reduce it even more. With the roster populated by young "prospect types'". and bargain basement vets the FO will be able to operate on the basis of let's see how things go before spending any real money in free agency. This will last for at least a few seasons. The argument that non-contending teams "don't need" elite and/or high end controlled RP is dubious at best. Taking the same logic a non-contending team doesn't need elite hitters or great defense at SS because it will be wasted. Winning and competing for Championships requires real plans, clear intent and yes some resources devoted to talent acquisition. Losing and mediocrity are the result when these factors are not consistently prioritized.
