Whom Could Minnesota Twins Trade This Offseason?
GNess replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins have already begun executing some plan - whatever it is from their perspective (Total rebuild, short term reset, salary dump/lowering expectations, some hybrid of options). We'll have clear evidence by what they do this winter with Lopez and Ryan. My confidence that the Twins will be a legit contender in the short (2026) to medium term (2027-2028) is not particularly high given the track record of the Twins decision-makers over the past decade or so. I will hope to be pleasantly surprised. by how it plays out.- 46 replies

If the Twins trade for prospects for Ryan and/or Lopez I am dubious that any of the prospects they get in return ever performs at the levels that Lopez and Ryan do. How does a consistent cycling of trading of valued, performing MLB players (seen as "assets") for more prospects ever get the Twins into a consistent contender mode? Isn't generally a successful reset like this premised on maintaining a core to build around? Current MLB performing core pieces: Buxton, Ryan, Lopez, Jeffers...who else - Lewis? So the Twins are going to become a contender by moving the 2 upper end starting pitchers? I just don't see the logic behind this beyond the generic view of "that's how small/mid market teams do it" - don't the specifics of of the Twins roster factor heavily in the approach chosen to improve? Are we sure this isn't just a way to hide a salary dump?
-
Well presented article for sure, but I would suggest that the central problem with the core may not be development as appears to be the main thrust of most comments. The player evaluation process has to be questioned in a big way when this many so-called raw talents are failing - perhaps this collection of players were mis-evaluated and simply aren't as good as they were projected to be?

Well presented article which shows a likely pathetic and predictable salary dump by the Twins going forward.

"Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things..." So there is that; the Twins and their fans can hope for many, many pieces to fall into place and they become a contending team in 2026.

All teams have a culture that reflects their values, history,, communication, interactions and behaviors. Not all players thrive in the same. cultural standards, but typically the cultural norms for the group are most influenced by the coaches, core players and vets. (Who the team needs most to produce.) My experience is most championship teams reflect confidence and mental toughness as values. The softer players often will simply have to adjust or be replaced. They behave like champions before they become championship contenders. Are the Twins given their up and down, lack of fundamentals and lack of attention to detail mode have not developed the traits of a championship culture.

The owner says we want to win. Everyone wants to win - what are you willing to do to maximize your chances? Since 1995 (30 seasons seemed like a nice round number) here is a quick breakdown of World Series appearances: Yes, it is only one metric but if you want to win... Three of More Appearances: Yankees, Guardians, Redsox, Rangers, Astros, Braves, Giants, Cardinals, Phillies, Dodgers One-Two Appearances: Angels, Chisox, Tigers, Rays, Royals, Marlins, Padres, Mets, D-Backs, Rockies, Cubs, Nats No Appearances: A's, Bluejays, Mariners, Brewers, Orioles, Pirates, Reds, TWINS UGH

I don't get why the current FO which constructed the current Twins and subsequent teardown are to be trusted with yet another Twins' reset? (Even if they adopt a Brewers mindset.) I also don't understand the fascination and overhyping of teams that thrive in the regular season but consistently fail in the postseason? Twins 0-18 streak of postseason futility comes to mind. They made an entertaining movie out of Moneyball but how many World Series did those A's win?

Putting aside the fan - Varland connection the trade is really speculative and suggests a risky bet on upside. Is Roden currently better or likely to be better than Larnach, Wallner, Rodriguez, Jenkins etc? Falvey stated clearly he expected Roden to be an "everyday" OFer. He is going to have surpass some highly regarded prospects and some other players who have done some positive things at the MLB level. Rojas is yet another young pitcher with significant promise apparently, but how many of them actually succeed? Varland was actively proving his value to the Twins during this season and had the possibility of even more upside potential as an elite RP. This risk also seemed to be a rushed last minute move even by Falvey's description. I don't like this trade regardless of the local angle. (But I do hope Roden and Rojas prove to be outstanding Twins.)

The Twins have lowered payroll in these moves and the probable off-season trade of. Pablo Lopez will reduce it even more. With the roster populated by young "prospect types'". and bargain basement vets the FO will be able to operate on the basis of let's see how things go before spending any real money in free agency. This will last for at least a few seasons. The argument that non-contending teams "don't need" elite and/or high end controlled RP is dubious at best. Taking the same logic a non-contending team doesn't need elite hitters or great defense at SS because it will be wasted. Winning and competing for Championships requires real plans, clear intent and yes some resources devoted to talent acquisition. Losing and mediocrity are the result when these factors are not consistently prioritized.

Your response is thoughtful and makes sense. Allow me a few counter points - plenty of teams performing below .500 don't trade away nearly 40% of their rosters. That has to raise some. eyebrows - no? The bottom line here is there will be a significant reduction in payroll with the roster filled with younger (read less expensive) players during this so called reset. I. suspect they aren't finished and the off season will see some more re-setting.

I have been a loyal Twins fan since 1966.and on balance enjoyed the experience despite the paucity of peaks (.87, 91) and too many valleys to note here. But a common theme has been ownership that rarely if ever demonstrates a true commitment to winning and excellence. Talk of 3-5 year re-builds rather than 1-2 year re-tools are just noise. Teams like the Twins often justify these self-inflicted valleys for baseball reasons and a stronger future, but in reality it's almost always driven by financial desires/directives about money. I have reached a place as a fan that I accept that reality, but I sure as heck don't have to pretend to like it.

The Twins Finally Picked a Lane
GNess replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The FO assembled the team they just dismantled. If it is some sort of admission of failure there needs to be accountability for said failure. That falls primarily on the FO. They shouldn't get a "do-over" opportunity. It should also be mentioned that some of the trades made such as dealing away Varland seem to contradict a reset mode by surrendering a young,, quality RP who they could control through 2030 apparently - so even young talent was sacrificed by this reckless tear it all down approach. Picked a lane? The Twins just went off the road and into a ditch filled with unproven, inexperienced players to run out there for the foreseeable future. Sad.- 301 replies

I don't know much about the Phillies prospects the Twins got for Duran, but it seems a bit light but not just totally lopsided against the Twins.

The first issue to consider is how long before new ownership. emerges and takes control? If it's imminent then sure put a hold on things for now and let new owners decide the direction. But if this process takes us well into next season and beyond it would be irresponsible for the Twins to forego participating in a key opportunity to improve their roster and future. (Trades at deadline.) Falvey is presently in-charge so while my confidence is not super high Falvey has to be a MLB FO executive and make executive decisions.

Gabriel Gonzalez is a Great Hitter, but It Might not Matter
GNess replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Twins fan culture. Find a dark cloud in a silver lining whenever possible. -
Buxton wow! Great to see him dominating games in multiple phases. Just a touch bittersweet to consider what his career could have been had he stayed relatively healthy.
