  1. The Tigers were 10.5 GB and under .500 in mid-August. They. played out of their minds over the final six weeks. Does that clearly outlier performance really demonstrate anything for other teams - I think not.
  2. I agree with your basic premise. Cleveland especially has mastered this feat of winning beyond their payroll. However, are any of the three central playoff entrants likely to advance to the World Series? Teams that spend are typically those in serious contention most consistently. (Note: Astros, Dodgers, Phillies as examples)
  3. Sad end to a season which held a lot of promise until it didn't. Total system failure such as this calls for a serious rethink with some big changes in likely a number of facets. (Of course, current ownership has to mandate and lead this change - will they?.) I live. in the SF Bay Area - things could be much worse - such as they are for fans of the soon to be Sacramento A's.
  4. Any team with a final record after 162 games that warrants a wildcard / division championship berth deserves the opportunity. The undeserving teams are those whose record didn't qualify them. If somehow the Twins make the playoffs I will watch and root for them as always regardless of their level of suckitude the past month. It's not like the Twins are .in the postseason every year.
  5. Young players often go through struggles only to develop into quality MLB players. Julien still has a chance to turn things around, but the window may be closing as a Twin.
  6. As the leader of the team the manager bears primary responsibility for the eventual outcomes. That seems to be the way sports work at a basic level - fair or not.
  7. Yes, the past six weeks or so have been disappointing. Tonight the Twins showed grit and toughness, which were a joy to watch as they kept competing. Big W.
  8. Buxton now, Correa soon - ready and in time to make a difference?
  9. Great to see Pablo Lopez's increase inn velocity - especially this late in the season.
  10. There is a short term benefit to adding Lee asap and allowing him to play SS-3B-2B. He is a defensive upgrade at 3B and 2B for sure. His bat is most likely an upgrade as well over Julien and Martin. Long term he appears to be a future core player who will garner significant experience from participating in a pennant race / fingers crossed postseason games. He should be in the lineup Friday.
  11. This entire argument is framed by the budget restraints the franchise has imposed on its self. However unreasonable these restraints are they are the reality. Given that not resigning Gray and Maeda makes some sense. Of course, the Twins are embracing the in-season MLB development of young pitchers - what other choice have they given themselves?
  12. The three losses in a row have seen multiple failures by the bullpen and lack of discipline running the bases. Alarmed? - No,, but a bit concerned. Given how close the chase for a playoff spot is it's no time for this to be happening. The races will likely come down to a game or two. On a somewhat related note - this team needs Correa and Buxton back asap.
  13. Yes he is worth it. As this well-written article points out there is more to Vazquez than numbers. He is a steady, smart, positive influence on a fairly inexperienced team, It would be nice though if he can keep up his improved hitting as of late.
  14. Ober has a calm, but competitive demeanor when he pitches. He has just kept improving.
  15. Buxton has been a joy to watch so far this season! His effort and other intangibles seem to have a positive effect on his teammates.
  16. I and I assume most of us on TD are. not billionaires so I (we) can't fully grasp what financial pressures the ownership of a MLB team face. (Yes, I understand that the value of MLB franchises over time have a strong tendency to grow considerably.) However, it seems they have an obligation to the fans and regions in which they operate to do their best to pursue reasonable actions to create the best opportunity to win games and contend for the World Series title as often as they can. The offseason didn't move the needle at all, and the trade deadline was a bust. (No offense intended to the new RP.) It won't make me care about the Twins any less, but it will make me long for the day that the Pohlads sell the team to someone or some group interested in competing and overall excellence.
  17. Pablo Lopez hung tough - his pitching well is going to be a central component for the Twins' postseason chances. The FO needs to add a better than average SP if possible. With the Twins lineup and run scoring prowess one more quality SP may make them serious contenders.
  18. Nice win over a MLB Power and the Twins were/are missing three big right handed bats. This team has some grit.
  19. Yes, the Twins weeks/months ago got swept by the Orioles, Yankees and Guardians. But that is not necessarily predictive of future results. The Twins have added Lewis, Lee, a recharged Wallner and Correa and Buxton are performing. to their talent, If the Twins add some pitching of course they could beat any of those teams in the postseason. Teams are dynamic - they evolve over the course of a long season.
