  1. Perhaps somewhere, but not in the post you quoted.
  2. There's a lot of confusion about the term "Confederate flag". Look at Wikipedia or other (possibly better) sources for more detail, but in summary... Here's the first flag of the Confederacy: Not too many truck drivers fly this one, in my experience. The one I see most of the time is more like this: That's a BATTLE flag (one of several similar designs for the various state armies/militias). It was incorporated into later iterations of the national flag, but not by itself (usually on a white background). When you see it in that form, they are celebrating battle, war, armed rebellion, whatever you want to call it. If they wanted to celebrate "southern heritage," "southern pride," "genteel way of life," etc they could just as accurately fly the flag they flew in 1859: http://www.usflag.org/historical/33star.gif But they don't. So no, I don't buy the posturing about a flag that is pointedly flown to intimidate.
  3. Wonder how much it would cost to pry him away from the Kiwoom Heroes. In other news, there is a team called the Kiwoom Heroes.
  4. The problem is also that Schoop just is not a fast baserunner. You have to give him time to score. Buxton's speed actually worked against him and was part of the problem here - if Cron had tried that, the ball would have reached 3rd base just as quickly, but Cron would not have been tagged out until Schoop (who wasn't hustling, to my eye) made it home. "Don't make the first or third out at third base" is usually a decent rule of thumb anyway. Buxton can score on essentially any single. Being on third with two outs gives him a shot if there's a WP/PB, but it's just not that valuable, compared to the risk of NOT EVEN SCORING SCHOOP'S RUN. That's the kind of bonehead play I would have made*, back in my slow-pitch or vintage-ball day. Thinking you've found an edge, instead giving the opponent one last shot at salvaging the situation. * Harsh criticism of anyone, I know. Sorry, Byron, not sorry.
  5. In late june he was put on the Injured List. That carries a minimum 7-day stay, and evidently he's not recovered yet. I don't know whether there was an announcement of what exactly is wrong; in the past it has been his shoulder. Worrisome, I agree. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/33691-article-twins-minor-league-report-624-davis-delivers-for-red-wings/
  6. I searched teh Intarwebs far and wide, and found no other instances of this phrase. Congratulations! You might have a viable Bulwer-Lytton entry on your hands!
  7. I don't know if we've ever talked much about insubordination, but I assume you're against it. Does this recap of Giles cursing his manager (on his previous team) on the field change your opinion about getting him, and maybe offer insight as to why he could be available? https://www.forbes.com/sites/moisekapendabower/2018/07/12/demoted-astros-reliever-ken-giles-could-stand-to-get-both-his-mind-and-his-arm-right-while-in-fresno/#6dd8572a5291
  8. Too bad the Chief master sergeant-at-arms isn't available for duty at the moment, but I can substitute if needed. Any ballots need tallying?
  9. Yeah, I've always interpreted "checking in on" as a quick phone call or text. "You interested in selling Joe Blow cheaply yet? No? OK then, good talking to you." Such news items are essentially meaningless. And consummating a trade this far from the deadline might be more expensive than waiting. But not THAT much more, and there's no room on the 40-man roster in 2020 and 2021 for all these prospects anyway. The window of contention is open right now, and that commands a premium which you have to be willing to pay. Still, as nicksaviking stated, until a given team is ready, you pretty much can't press the issue, without making it a deal you know from the outset you will regret. This trading deadline will tell me a lot about our front office.
  10. We occasionally get posters who inform us that they played varsity ball in high school or even some college, and thus understand what major leaguers are going through, moreso than the rest of us. A granddaughter who competes is a creative twist on this weary theme. Kudos. My daughter was a naturally gifted athlete in a couple of high-school sports and she showed more grit and determination than I ever did. So by no means was I questioning your girl's willingness to play through pain. What I question is what possible bearing it has on professional athletes such as baseball players who (among other differences) play 6 days out of 7. If they go on the IL it's not to loaf.
  11. Ohhhh, that Mauer. He truly earned his nickname, "Mr. Gullible." It says it right there on his b-r.com page. It's what his teammates called him. Mr. Gullible. Yep, that's what they called him. Check for yourself. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mauerjo01.shtml
  12. And that isn't the point.
  13. Yes, first base is a plausible choice, but for my money it's I Don't Give A Darn. Which, coincidentally, is also my mostly-serious answer. Kepler, Buxton and Garver would all make fine All-Star selections, but they're only knocking on the door and were not snubbed, while Polanco beat the door right down.
  14. ... as long as the opposing batters have to respect the breaking pitches. I've seen too many times where Tyler can't throw anything but the fastball for strikes. When that's the case, fastball fastball fastball, blammo.
  15. Your granddaughter probably isn't playing a sport at the highest professional level. Out Of The Park baseball game rates Trevor May as our best-fielding pitcher. Go with him.
  16. Rooker's not on the 40-man roster. You don't make a consequential move like that "for a game".
  17. Last year that little opposite-field single by Buxton would have been an embarrassing swing to pull it.
  18. You may have missed a few days ago an occasional TD poster who is from Pensacola offered this unofficial insight: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/33738-article-twins-minor-league-report-627-enlow-caught-in-pitcher’s-duel/?p=871959 "Pretty sure the reason Hackimer was suspended has something to do with his public display of anger at the manager (Borrego) on the field. My husband was at the game. I can't describe it further than this as I was not there." So, an instance of minor insubordination, that is being handled. If I was running a business in the public eye, I'd probably handle a personnel matter like this similarly. It has nothing to do with the player's on-field performance, so it's really no one else's business, IMO. Not... that I don't appreciate learning jamisea's insight. I'm not above gossip.
  19. Perhaps not, but the facial hair stylings will be awesome.
  20. I'll add that it's a long tradition for the presidential nominee to pick a VP who in one or more ways balances the ticket, in the name of electability. Choosing someone seen as more moderate, or more experienced, or from a different geographic region, are common. There's nothing sinister at all about balancing a ticket in some other way than those as well, for the same purpose. That further reduces the odds of a ticket being two of the same race/gender/etc, as we go forward, with "white straight male" no longer seen as the default.
  21. Touch the body of the post that you wish to quote, and at the bottom of the post (so maybe you'll have to scroll down) there will be some buttons among which one is "Quote". Touch the body of the post again, to make the buttons go away. Or, at least, that's how it is on my Android phone.
  22. A ninth-rounder from 2002 is a benchmark for anything? I literally did not remember the name. He wasn't touted, was he? If you're doing some kind of RandBall's Stu satire, ya got me.
