  1. Nah, we're just going to enjoy the 2 RBI and ignore you.
  2. I'd be sad for him. But not for my team.
  3. Schoop comes through, before I could type "c'mon"!
  4. Welllll... I think they have 7 days in total to trade him, otherwise there is no time to ask waivers and wait the necessary 3 days in order to assign him outright. That's assuming they haven't already put him on waivers.
  5. Like the major league 25-man roster, minor league teams have a limit too. Something like 22? Probably this is what LaVelle is referring to. / edit - Checking... nope, my info is either old or simply incorrect - looks like Rochester has 25. http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t534 Anyway, same difference, as regards the tweet.
  6. I consulted the rule book, and surprisingly there is no prohibition on doing so. It pays to check! Sounds like Rocco isn't going to take advantage of this loophole, though.
  7. 0-2 on Cruz. Incredibly, in 2019 Nelson is hitting .273 after falling behind 0-2. With 5 HR, that gives him a mighty OPS of .952 after that situation. Maybe he should just tell the ump to give him a couple of strikes when he steps up to the plate. Not this time, unfortunately.
  8. Yes, although the next team can try to get him through waivers. Blue Jays and (I think) the Reds played some back and forth games with the Twins not too many seasons ago.
  9. If you expect WPA to be an all-encompassing stat that tells you if a player is "good" or not, well, that's pushing it beyond what it was designed for. However, Baseball-reference.com has something right next to the WPA display, that you may like. It shows an "average leverage index" (ALI), which reflects the "blowout" effect you are geting at, and then next to that is WPA/LI, which is not simply the ratio of two numbers but is the sum of a lot of little ratios for each plate appearance. This sounds in the spirit of what you were describing. Here is the table ("Team Win Probability") for batters and pitchers, respectively, on the 2019 Twins: https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/2019-batting.shtml#all_players_win_probability_batting https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/2019-pitching.shtml#all_players_win_probability_pitching
  10. We were promised Jake Bauers on the mound. This is so disappointing.
  11. Given the choice, I always prefer a physical explanation over one that pretends to mind-read. Here's another reason. If a pitcher is nibbling, his catcher can try to do something about it. Assuming this isn't their first game together, they talk before and after a game, and tendencies like this can be discussed. Or, if during the game the catcher notices what he considers to be an attempt to be too fine, he puts down the signal for the pitch and puts his glove more toward the middle of home plate. Among other remedies. If it's a physical problem, there's not a darn thing the catcher can really do.
  12. Alternative view: command that comes and goes. The homer was on a pitch that caught more of the plate than intended, while some of the other pitches during that span went the other way. The HBP seals the deal for the dugout staff, and Gibby's evening is over after just 80 pitches. Doesn't that do an equally good job of explaining the results?
  13. Every pitcher works on the periphery of the strike zone, not down the middle. Few have the inherent stuff to do even the occasional "here it is, big boy, try to hit it" as a surprise. This whole narrative of "nibbling" is way out of proportion.
  14. So when we get breaks it's lucky, but when the other team gets them it proves our guys' lack of what it takes, or something? Other teams get seeing-eye singles against us. That's basically what Kepler's overturned out-call was, had it been called correctly in the first place. (And I'm not faulting the ump on that, we're in a new era of precision that made no sense in times past.) Sano committed an error, then got on base from one. That's the breaks evening out for the team, perhaps a little more directly than sometimes. Their CFer misjudged a fly and didn't go in the right direction immediately. Last year Jake Cave was placed on my Do Not Fly list for an opposite mistake (diving and missing on a dying quail) that lost a game on the spot. It happens. I feel such a lack of balance, in our collective reactions to events as they unfold. Every bad thing happens because of lack of ... something. Every good thing is luck. We have a good team. We won a game. I enjoyed the part that I tuned in for - am I lucky, or did the breaks just even out for me?
  15. What is reliever-risk? The risk that a starter turns out to have a ceiling as a reliever? Or a risk that he won't be able to adapt to the relief role if called on?
  16. Can't imagine how Bernie comes out of a brokered convention with the nomination. He seems to be actively disliked by many in the party apparatus. BTW, Eric Swalwell is my choice as the common sense candidate. He was the first to have the common sense to drop out.
  17. You wouldn't need to. Others will be happy to pick up the slack for you.
  18. Here's an article from 2016 in which the writer made the comparison to Cabrera, paraphrasing team scouts. http://www.startribune.com/how-the-twins-found-miguel-sano/368707081/ Perhaps the team itself never issued a press release saying Sano was the second coming of the Tiger superstar, but I doubt the writer simply cooked up the comparison himself. It's a gray area to determine the team's role but I can't find a reason to think they were especially uncomfortable with the article either. And I can't be too hard on a poster for remembering something from an article and thinking it was more official.
