You are gaslighting all of us. Not a good investment? They bought the club for $44m and will get probably $1.5b while netting the $10-20m operating income each year. Unbelievable return. This comment is trying to rewrite the cheapness of the Pohlads. Even including their investment for the stadium, their return is somewhere between 500-1000% not including annual income.

Should Fans Trust the Twins' Front Office?
sjunisu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Couple of counter points - 1) Royce Lewis is not a 'recent' draft pick (6 yrs ago) plus he has not been able to stay on the field up to this point. While we all have high hopes for Lee and Jenkins, way to early to put this in the win column - not until we see MLB performance. If you are going back to when the Duo first started, Rooker was a 1st round failure, Larnach has not even been an average MLB, nothing needs to be said about Cavaco and Sabato, too soon to tell on Noah Miller and everyone from 2021 and after. 2) Attracting what talent? Correa? That is looking like a mistake at this point. Donaldson? That was an unmitigated disaster that we had to basically pay to get out from under that contract (by giving up Garver (indirectly) and Rortvedt. I can't think of other high profile player the Duo has signed during their tenure. 3) Trades - you also forget the faiure that was the Pressley trade. That has not worked out at all. I would also add in the Maeda trade. One decent season and giving up Graterol was not a win. If you consider the Escobar trade that netted Duran a win then the Maeda trade was a loss.- 38 replies

That would make complete sense. Poster childs for this are Gallo like you mentioned and Buxton this year. Solo homers and striking out do not make a winning team (as our Twins have shown for much of the season).

Updated MLB Farm System Rankings After 2023 MLB Draft | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors | Bleacher Report New ranking just came out - 27 (which is a fall from 11 at the previous ranking). This includes the most recent draft results. Also interesting to see Christian Encarnacion Strand the number 2 ranked prospect in the Reds 3rd rated system. Mahle trade is now almost laugable how one sided it has been (with Steer already playing solid ball in the majors). Incredible work by the FO to achieve such lofty ranking 7 years into tenure and graduating so many high level prospects.
-
This FO appears to be incapable of admitting a mistake. Pure Hubris. Nobody wanted EP back this year but Falvine signed him anyway and now won't DFA as that would admit the error. Same goes for Kepler not being DFA, Gallo, keeping Buxton at DH rather than play the field and have a better hitter there (Jullien, Wallner, Lewis, any number of guys). Now just waiting for a Mahle signing shoe to drop to prevent admitting that horrendous trade (even though we should not need him in 2025 when he would return and be only partially effective 1st yr back). This FO needs to ask their accounting department about what a 'sunk cost' is - and how it plays a part of roster construction.

The Clock is Ticking on the Twins' Roster
sjunisu replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yesterdays lineup could be the poster child why Rocco needs to go soon. While the FO has its own bushel of faults/problems, even I don't believe Falvine sent a message to Rocco to bat Garlick 3rd, nor pinch hit Larnach and Kepler who are simply flailing at this point, nor having Correa hit 4th when there are currently better options for those slots with Lewis, Jeffers, Farmer. Salary is moot and sunk cost at this point, order should show who is performing regardless of hurt feelings or regret of contracts.- 32 replies

You are correct - can't hang those five on them. But can hang this impressive group: Rooker, Landon Leach, Enlow, Larnach, Cavaco, Sabato, Soularie. This is just the top 3 rounds from 2017-2020. Go to Baseball Reference and take a look at their drafting skills since the 2017 draft - not pretty and a big reason we are seeing this product on the field. Here is what we have from 2021 Draft: Petty (Traded for 1.5 seasons of Gray) Gone, Miller (so far not so good), Hajjar (not even wiht the Twins - Guardians now), Povich (Traded). That is the first 3 rounds. Another lost draft.

Use whatever draft ranking service you want. I am not going to analyze 6 yrs of moves and redraft the entire 6 yrs (Joe Pohlad should ask for this analysis though). International signings could be done as simply take the money and sign the highest rated players possible - with what the money allows. The point is the duo have added virtually nothing during their 6+ yr tenure and having a very inexperienced person would not have produced any fewer playoff wins (zero thus far). The straw argument that there would be no pitching does not fly. If we don’t sign players to extensions then we would have fielded trade proposals which would have netted something back. Are those assets pitching, don’t know as it is theoretical, but may have been. Bottom line is Falvine have done virtually nothing since they arrived that a majority of the people on this website could not have accomplished - with the possibility that a few could have done more. As far as the argument of laying out a plan what I or someone else would have done over the last 6 yrs, give me 1/10 of what those two have earned thus far and I would be happy to spend the time to do so.

How predictable you come to Falvine defense Mike. We have Chase Petty ( or someone else drafted) back for Gray. Would have had Presley and Escobar in place of Duran. Considering we would have 6 yrs of redrafting and international signings I am betting we could have produced more pitchers than Ober and Varland - but that is just my thoughts.

As I said in another tread, consider the possibility of the Twins if none of the Trades/Moves Falvine have made occurred since they were hired (just put an intern in the chair and hired any experience baseball person to evaluate trade offers, not negotiate, just evaluate). No Rocco, Molitor as manager. No Kepler extension. No Sano extension. No Pressley Trade. No Donaldson deal. No Buxton extension. No Correa signing(s). None of it. One more step - drafting the BPA (by MLB ranking service) in 2019/2020 instead of Cavaco and Sabato. Heck, even BPA for every pick in every draft the last six years.Basically taking the FO out of the equation the last 6 years and go on autopilot. Only miss Polanco extension (even that is a little questionable with minor league talent and how often he has been hurt and we would have gotten assets back in a trade) and Joe Ryan. One move and possibily one extension. Certainly would not be any worse today and would have more minor league talent. There is not a free agent on the team that is contributing more than about replacement at this point. And if the were still inept (which is certainly possible but certainly not given) at least we could point to an intern being the GM rather than the overpaid smarest guys in the room Falvine.

What Would a Twins Rebuild Look Like?
sjunisu replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would much rather have a roster that looks like what you published here than what this FO has trotted out the last 2 yrs. I am done with signings like Gallo, Shoemaker, Happ, Colome, Bundy, Archer, and the constant and numerous retreads Falvine has trotted out from the waiver wire that have provided absolutely nothing to build upon. At least this would allow the organization to determine exactly what we have in the pipeline and provide some further prospects if the trades proposed would occur - as this team is nowhere close to serious contention. Ability to give a final grade on the FO ability to create and form a minor league pipeline. Let the leather meet the road. -
The Twins Know They Need Pitching, Right?
sjunisu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The answer is simple - $$$. We have yet to lose out on a player where we were the high bidder. End of story. When we become the high bidder, then we will sign free agents.- 70 replies

"Stepping Back" Isn't an Option
sjunisu replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have not posted on this site in over a year as my criticism of the FO was often met with distain (certainly there were some who were also critical, but a smaller percentage than the cheerleaders for sure). Beast points it out perfectly. Interesting to see the tenor of the site has changed dramatically in 1 yr - despite this FO having the same stripes as previous years. Falvine is the same today as they were one year ago, 3 years ago, and 5 yrs ago. They have yet to show a compentcy in any significant aspect of a FO - Trading, Developing Talent, Drafting, or Signing FA. Gallo and whomever else follows is just more of the same.- 53 replies

What the Hell Are the Twins Doing with Byron Buxton?
sjunisu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The easy answer is to simply watch the actions of Pohlad and the FO (especially the curent one, but past ones as well), not listen to the words. If we simply do that, over the course of the last 2+ decades you will see an organization whose total focus is to maximize cash flow/profits. If they stumble into winning along the way to profit maximization then that is a bonus. This is the one thing the organization can lay claim to as their area of expertise - not free agent acquisition, not player development, not international signing, and not drafting new talent. Maximizing profit/cashflow which is what this ownership has always wanted. -
Let me help you a little bit with understanding my post. 1 Time out of 24 they have 'splurged'. 11 times they have spent just 'average'. And 12 times they have gone less than their revenue rank - which I would define as CHEAP. If they would go as many times over their rank as under, then at best you could call them average - which is simply not the case. Seems you also interchange average/mean with median rankings. League average is skewed higher due to some really high spenders. I have not specifically done the math, but 10-15% less than average may be higher that the median which would be 15. If I can afford to buy a Honda, but routinely get a POS Dodge then most people, especially my family would call me CHEAP.

Yes the Twins have now ONCE ponnied up for a real FA (Donaldson) and yet there was debate whether he was the right player to do this with (and the debate still rages on). I would not personally hang my hat on a team and FO that has accomplished a simple feat such as this once. As for 2022 - not sure I would call our chances 'excellent' unless the team/FO miraculously triple the number of of real FA they have signed to 3 from the current 1. I for one will believe it when I see it given past history. Too many times have I been fooled to fall for this again. As for Pohlads being cheap - over the last 20-25 yrs how many time have the Twins been in the top third of payroll vs the bottom third of payroll? Here is the breakdown of Twins payroll rank since 1998: Top 1/3 - 1. Middle 1/3 - 11 (most frequently 18/19). 20th or less - 12 (bottom 4 a total of 4 times) Not sure what your definition of low/cheap is, but the above figures certainly fit my definition.

You are mistaking jealously and insecurity for anger and frustration. The Vikings are an absolte basketcase and have been for years (which is unfortunate as they have owners who are willing to spend money and appear to be fans of the game). The Wild and Wolves have owners that are clueless on how to win in their respective sports (although the Wild hiring GMBG was a strong move and looks like might slowly move them forward). As for the Twins, the owner cares more about yearly cash-flow than any sense of loyalty/responsibility to the fans (and don't get me started with its a business and they need to make money - the massive increase in franchise valuation is where they make their money, as it is with any owner/franchise). I could understand the Pohlads approach if the Twins were their primary business (like when Al Davis owned the Raiders), but the Twins are just a cog in the Pohlad money machine. Unlike other major sports owners, it does not appear that owning the franchise provides them with any real joy or excitement - which honestly shows in the performance and approach of the team over time.

I honestly did not even think this was debatable at this point. We got the use of a 4th outfielder (which are a dime a dozen) for a lottery ticket that looks like cashed big and would certainly look good in our rotation going into 2022. I don't need to be Nostradamus to know the Yankees will have won this trade in the same way they have been dominating our Twins over the last decade - in decisive fashion ?
-
Maybe we can all form a circle and sing Kumbaya and be thankful our billionaire owner overlords simply let us have the privledge of watching their teams perform while continually giving them more of our tax money. ?

Envisioning a Good Twins Rotation in 2022 (For Real!)
sjunisu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nick - I like your writing and willingness to put out a very public plan, but I do not see this plan as having a 'Good' rotation in 2022. Corey Kluber, Charlie Morton, Alex Cobb, Andrew Heaney at this point in their careers are back-end starters. Same with Pineda. Taillion I would realistically put in th 3/4 range at this point. Dobnak I view more as a fill-in type bouncing between Twins/Saints. Right now I see 2 pitchers for the Twins (Ober and Ryan). I do think they could have 1 more from internal selections you listed as a back-end option at some point next yr (haven't seen any of them yet). But in order to get to 'Good' (heck even average) they are going to have to spend money or trade real assets which the FO has not been willing to do. Two of Stroman/Rodon/Gausman/Ray with our internal options might get us slightly above average next yr. If the two are more like Kluber or Duffy (who I would be fine with as 3/4) leading the charge, then the staff won't even be average. Two of those 4 are going to cost $34-40M and unfortunately the Twins have never spent that on a pitcher (let alone 2). However, if they could get 2 of those 4 (or similar) along with Maeda back in 2023, along with growth from the internal candidates, they would have the makings of a 'Good' staff by 2023 which at this point is the best case scenario.- 92 replies

I tend to agree with you, but our trade history with the Yankees is less than stellar and usually shows the Twins on the losing end of the trade (but the Twins keep going back for more - Please sir, may I have another :))

Let the Learning Commence for Twins Brass
sjunisu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You are correct - however, it seems to be much easier to get a player to sign with their existing team than come back to a team which traded them. Escobar signed for 3/21 in 2018 which I would definitely rather have at that price than Donaldson at 20M+ per (plus I believe Escobar liked playing here prior and was really good in the clubhouse). Pressley had an additional yr control and signed 2/17.5 plus an option another contract I would definitely take over the likes of Colome. Plus the fact of the matter is none of the trade assets have seen quality time w/ Twins (Alcala has been less than average and Celistino was clearly overmatched what we saw). Point is, the Twins would be better off with both of these players (w/ the FA contracts) and Gil/Ynoa than what we got out of all 4 of those trades. Had those trades never happened, 2022 would be looking a bit brighter right now.- 45 replies
