2B is Martin's natural position so he should be considered as back-up. Keaschal is not a needed option yet. Agree with FlyinFinn that Castro is a SS back-up but glad that Lee has bumped him as #2. We've been extremely fortunate that our catchers have been extraordinarily healthy especially Vazquez these last 2 seasons otherwise we'd be in worse condition than in '22 & we could kiss playoffs goodbye, Otherwise depth wise we are very good.

Week in Review: Coming Alive After a Deadline Dud
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lee & Martin have shown some signs of turning things around, Even not completely settled in the MLB with his hitting, Martin has sparks some rallies by his good ABs & sparkling base running. I'm hoping the Twins give up on making Dobber into a SO pitcher & let him be that GB pitcher with that SO pitch to use only when absolutely needed.- 20 replies

Why are the Twins Waiting on Louie Varland?
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I've been advocating for Varland in the pen since the start of the season. Varland is great 1st time through the order but doesn't have his secondary pitches going to get him much beyond that, My point he can pitch in spot start/ long relief & still work in his change-up. We really need Varland to help out our rotation & BP, especially for this double-header but they won't bring up Varland & have him settled in the pen until Topa has every opportunity to succeed in short relief 1st.- 33 replies

There were some hard-fought battles in the MiLBs, Eeles had a great game in AAA. Only AA was able to squeeze out a win.

We all know that Julien can mash in AAA but SOs are my main concern.

Dobber has been an effective boring GB pitcher for the Twins. '21 going into spring training after acquiring super-hyped Happ & Shumaker, the Dobber wasn't expected to make the rotation. But Dobber picked up a different slider & was striking out batters left & right leaving spring training as the most effective SP & a new contract. The old Dobber was perfectly fine by manufacturing GBs & not giving up HRs. But a lot of the ABs were long because he had trouble putting away hitters & they kept fouling off pitches. This new pitch would revolutionize Dobber by drastically cutting down pitches with occasionally working in the new slider in these ABs for SOs. Here the Twins decided to transform Dobber into something he wasn't, a SO SP. Throwing that new slider most of the time before he had total command of it & with added pressure on his middle finger he started to hang them, & eventually really screwing up his finger. IMO they are still trying to make him into a SO SP. He might be able to SO AAA hitters on that pitch but the MLBer aren't biting. They should let Dobber be the Dobber as boring as that may be.

Ober had a good game against a poor team. I love Martin's hustle, if that doesn't fire up a team I don't what will. Martin, Lee & Jeffers had a good nite at the plate. Jeffers's swing looked nice. Good ABs forced Crochet out early. Any win is a good win let's extend CWS losing streak to a nice round 20. Nice game for SWR to get back on track & revenge over CWS for being a pain at the deadline (I'm not really too disappointed over it) After that I wish them well.

Some injured Twins players seem to have entered the Twilight Zone some time after going on the IL where they are not heard of. Baffling

Very encouraging for Varland, despite many contrary opinions Varland is very valuable to this team & should be up with the main team as spot starter/ long relief. But they'll give every opportunity for Topa to prove himself in the short relief role 1st. Until then Varland'll waste bullets in AAA. I don't see Olivar any longer in the top 20, after he was promoted & raking in AA. What happened? Is Doncon hurt? He hasn't been playing.

Four Keys to the Twins Making the Playoffs
Doctor Gast replied to Eric Blonigen's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Even with early injuries to key players & ineffectiveness of some key pitchers we are at or even better record than last year. The problem is that underrated CLE even without the SPs they usually have & Francona, having stood pat in the offseason & very little at the deadline; but handily has the best record in MLB right now.. They have put their faith in their young players & not gone after FA veterans. Many say clutch hitting is an unsustainable stat. I say it's an ability. Overtaking CLE won't be easy. IMO Lopez is back, Sims will learn from his last outing, Ober & Ryan can surprise us, the 5th spot can be pieced together spot-starter/ long relief Festa, Paddack, Varland, Dobber, Sands, Mathews or any 5th starter we can pick up. These options will go a long way to help keep the rotation healthy & rested. Duran & Stewart will find themselves & Thielbar will be serviceable. Most of the injuries are not serious & should have a full-strength line-up intact soon. We need to keep winning our series, especially against CLE & keep chipping away. We are a better team & IMO we can win the division.- 60 replies

You are right, to be fair, it's very difficult to initiate a trade & for most GMs they probably don't do a good job. Pitching you ideas to a fan base is very different from pitching them to a GM of a team. IMO LAD's GM plays chess while the rest of the league are playing checkers & tic-tac-toe. Their value system is different than most, They value defense & flexibility, they can see players & envision what they can become, know when they can't develop a player any further or if they fit in the club they get rid of them & when they want a Mookie Betts, Edman, Kopech or any player they know they can develop into something they need they creatively go out there & get them. STL benefitted from it while seller CWS did not come out on top.

Matt Wallner Is Obliterating Baseballs
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I love what Wallner is doing. He's hitting the off-speed pitches & his fielding is improving. Wallner is strong, he's doing what Sano could not, Adapt. Hope Julien can do the same. -
Matt Wallner Is Obliterating Baseballs
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks Sean, That's what I was going to say but w/o the stats to back it. -
This was definitely a seller's market. We could have sold some veteran pieces like other teams did & came out ahead on paper, and got rid of some payroll (like was done with Polanco). But in most cases that would disrupt the chemistry of the clubhouse. Would that be worth it? In most cases probably not. But trading for high-leverage LHRP AJ Puk would have been a great addition to fill a need. He wouldn't break the bank. When I first recommended the trade we could have easily passed off Gonzales as a top-100 prospect, to be used in as basically an even swap for a MIA's prospect starving farm. Gonzales is a poor defensive, free-swinging, contact hitter that some think has some power potential. To gain full value, Gonzales should have been flipped in the offseason. IMO Margot could have been sold w/o much disruption to the clubhouse, which could easily be regained by extra Martin playing time & addition of Keirsey to the roster. Most teams were only looking for a small cheap upgrade in the OF, there was a market for Margot. We wouldn't get anything for Margot except salary relief & a valuable roster spot. We didn't give up anything for (RP) Richards, except a roster spot. He's not bad against LHHs but most of the hitters he will face will be RHHs no matter how you slice it. On the Twins website, Richards is hardly mentioned much less the savior of the BP. So there is hope that he won't be used as such. I said prior that I'd rather this FO do nothing than do something stupid. Appears they did that. I agree that there were no reasonable SPs available that could impact the Twins. Back of the rotation depth could be added much more reasonably via the waiver wire, FA, independent & international leagues; and better yet internally.

This FO isn't bad at selling but to be buyers for a competitive team they really suck.

Thank you Craig so much for showing baseball players (contrary to many fans' ideas) are not robots. They have feelings & are affected by their circumstances that affect their stats (again many fans won't acknowledge this). It's so disheartening to see fans so cold & cruel. I pray for Garver, Polanco (I expect the same treatment) & their families to give them the grace to get through this hard time. Garver & Polanco are both great hitters, there is something deeper that is affecting their hitting.

Thank you Mike. I agree money was an issue for Falvey but the money issue could have been circumvented. Meaning if there is a will there is a way to get around it. Falvey didn't take that route.

"Nothing about the Twins trade deadline turns to Falvey or Thad Levine." I beg to differ. IMO money had very little to do with this deadline. Maybe it kept us from trading for high-salary rentals like Eovaldi who ended up not being available, there weren't any high-end SPs available to really help the Twins. & if there was a salary that was too high, why not increase prospect capital & ask the team to pay down the player's salary? LHRP AJ Puk was available what stop them from approaching MIA early to make a trade? I can't see money being a problem. The problem that I see is that this FO doesn't like to trade prospects, he loves to horde them. In '22 added to that fear by trading away redundant prospects for damaged goods. I applaud this FO for letting go of redundant prospects even though they should have done a better job of evaluating the players. We entered this last offseason with one need which is a postseason SP. FA was out the question a big trade needed to be made, here again, the FO was not able to initiate a big trade moving players that could be moved. They made a lot of busy little trades that did nothing to meet the needs of the team, just to appease the media & fans. Blaming the Pohlads is the easy way to divert the attention from the real problem.
