The One That Got Away from the Twins Bullpen
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks Nick. It's a shame the Twins were able see the talent in Hendriks but weren't able to profile him as a closer and he passed thru many teams until OAK properly profiled him as such. I've always liked Pressly but I'm happy that HOU was able to have the key to unlock his full potential. The patience that the Twins had with Pressly we need to have with Alcala & Celestino. Alcala has shown a lot of potential especially after developing his 3rd pitch, once healthy, he'll be impactful. Same with Celestino, he was prematurely thrust into the fire in '21 & as to be expected he was terrible. But the following year he made great strides and again because of injuries he was stretched & cracks appears playing a high profile position. Yet again I expect him to make great strides in 2023. So don't give up on Alcala or Celestino because they both have great talent. Contrary to Pressly's trade, I was completely against the Rogers trade (except Rooker), Rogers should have been extended because we profiled him right (SD had no idea how to use him) & we needed him badly. -
1st MLB Draft Lottery this year, but there is a better way
Doctor Gast commented on Doc Munson's blog entry in Fantasy GM
Love your out of the box thinking Doc! Keep it up. -
I like both Fulmer & Rogers, Here at MN we know that Rogers is an excellent RP when not pitched on consecutive days. So when SD didn't pitch him that way and is no wonder that after his early success he crashed. Brewers are interested in signing him. Rogers has always been a great fit here. Fulmer pitched well here and fits well here, I'd pursue him but there should be a lot of competition for him. Hopefully he liked it here enough to stay.

Twins Spotlight: RHP Andrew Morris
Doctor Gast replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Thanks Seth, I'll place him on my radar. -
I believe Pohlad to be sincere. His statement of Boras being an aggressive agent means to me that Pohlad believes that Correa would have been close to sign if not for him. But because Boras is aggressive Pohlad believes he has a chance to sign Correa because the market could be more competitive than last year. Correa is a great mentor, he had taken Pena under his wing and Pena is as good a SS because of this. He has taken Miranda under his wing and I'm expecting a jump in Miranda's defense. He can help all our young INFers. Other long term big bucks SS don't fit here as well as Correa. IF Andrus & Iglesia are our short term solution, we need to try harder to sign Correa. Basically no one of value will sign before Judge so it'll be a long off season for Correa.

Unsung Heroes of Twins Baseball: The Catchers
Doctor Gast replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think you have a soft spot for catchers, Sherry. I love all the catchers you mention & I'd like to add Earl Battey, a tough all around great, all star Twins catcher during the 60's.- 5 replies

I like your your thinking & selections, Cody. I see you went strictly the FA route, I'd lean closer to some trades, just my preference. Do you really think that Correa would go for $40MM? seems pretty high to me. I could be wrong but would Maeda be able to go 5 inning to begin '23? These adjustments would bring down your orignal estimates. I'd go more with long RPs, Ober, Winder, Varland, Maeda with SWR waiting in the wings plus have rotating 5th starter. But management hasn't figured that one out yet. Hope it happens but doubt it.

Carlos Correa Option. Would this be legal?
Doctor Gast commented on Doc Munson's blog entry in Fantasy GM
Could the Twins and Correa come to an agreement where he opts in for 2023, and teh Twins agree to allow him to negotiate with other teams for a long term contract? I don't watch NBA so I have no idea about the specifics, but to me it's clear cut. Where do you come in with trades? Correa opts in for '23 & opts out '24 & automatically goes to the team where the Twins allowed him to sign in '23 for '24 and beyond. -
Twins Missing a Mauer Level of Certainty
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Happy bithday Joe! We miss you! Your talent was rare and you deserve to be in the HOF. It'll be difficult to find another Mauer. We don't have anyone close in our organization that's close to make it in the MLB.- 9 replies

Sanchez surprized me the most. I don't think that he should be rated that high. Looks like Arraez has found his position, his high SDI is impressive. Of coarse the GG can't be judged on SDI alone but how well he handles his position which includes more things. But in Vlady's case it's his bat.

Planning for the Future Behind the Plate
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For example if have a regiment of taking my colesterol medicine, my colesterol level is great if I leave that regiment my levels are lousy. Under the same premise if Garver has a regiment of rest he does great if he leaves that regiment, he's lousy & hurt. The same can go for Cruz, Odorizzi & Rogers, when they were with the Twins & follow a certain regiment of rest they did great after they left here & their regiment they did lousy. Yes when Rortvedt started a new level, his batting left a lot to be desired but when he settled in a level his batting OBP & OPS were pretty darn good for a catcher. When thrusted into MLB, his hitting as you can imagine was terrible but when he was sent down to AAA, his numbers were respectable. IMO if he had remain in MN having more advanced hitting technics & more acclimated to MLB his his hitting would continue to climb until he'd be respectable hitter. Rortvedt will always be a fantastic defensive catcher but the upheaval of him moving to a different organization has devasted his hitting. My hope we could bring him back & try recoup the damage.- 26 replies

Carlos Correa Option. Would this be legal?
Doctor Gast commented on Doc Munson's blog entry in Fantasy GM
Nice out of the box thinking Doc! I stated before that Correa would be better off if he opt in his $35MM 2nd year & have a better chance of getting a better deal in '24. But your idea is better because it gives Correa more security right now. I think the person who would protest is the 2nd party (Twins) if the Twins allow him to seek a 3rd party for his '24+ yrs. services, that'd satisfy everybody, as long as his loyality isn't divided. I'd hope for that to be legal. -
Planning for the Future Behind the Plate
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was in the camp of moving Jeffers instead of Garver & Rortvedt and pick up a cheaper #2. Jeffer's trade value was very attractive & only saw him as a #2 catcher. Garver if he stayed & continued his regiment, he would have been healthier. I still like Rortvedt as a very good defensive catcher that can be taught to hit. I'd like to have him back. Could he be competent #2 catcher '23? I'd still like him in AAA to learn hitting. Now Jeffer's stock has deeply fallen & will soon be very low if we don't trade him soon. Contreras is an offensive catcher which has something to be desired defensively & comes w/ a declined QO. If his price comes down & he's around I'd pick him up. I'd like picking up Murphy (OAK) or Jansen (TOR) via trade. Either way I'd pick Narvaez as my 2nd catcher. 1st catcher ? (not Jeffers); 2nd catcher Narvaez; 3rd catcher Rortvedt; '26 Noah Cardenas- 26 replies

Jim Pohlad doesn't speak very often but when he does something happens. When Buxton extention talk was going on with Flavine, things were going south. Many pundits were already picking teams where Buxton was landing and many fans from TD had written him off (I was very frustrated). The way it was going w/ Flavine it wasn't going to happen. But then Pohlad spoke and then it happened. Buxton always wanted to stay so nothing change there except Pohlad spoke. No way IMO that NYY, LAD or any other big shot will pursue Correa, contrary to rumor. #1 the cheating scandal that effected them. #2 All of them are going to make Judge their #1 priority. #3 they have other routes that they could take before signing Correa. Besides competing w/ Judge for available FA $, he also has Turner, Bogeart & Swanson to compete against for the SS position. IMO he's not going get close to what he wants, my guess would be 9yrs./ 240M. IMO Pohlad has an idea what Correa could get & figures he has a shot of getting him. So I say we have better than 50/50 chance of landing him. If Inglesia or Andrus is our option of short term we better try harder to get Correa.

Twins Trade Target: Sean Murphy
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We are really hurting at catching recent past, present and well into the future. We absolutely need Murphy, especially due the change of the game. Signing Correa should be our #1 priority but obtaining Murphy should be #2. We can go the 3 way route and trade some of our expendable veterans to a 3rd team for them to help us out on the prospects with OAK.- 27 replies

I agree that SS is our #1 priority, If we go long term it has to be Correa (or then go short term because the others IMO don't fit). But by long shot catching is our #2 priority. Jeffers has hit a rut much like Kepler & I have less patience with Jeffers mainly because of his arm. Jeffers has always been a #2 catcher in my book. I'd like a much better catcher that we can lock up for a few years wether a trade or free agency because we don't have a catcher coming that I like until maybe '26 with Noah Cardenas plus a lot can happen until then.

We need to work on all aspects against base stealing 1st we need a catcher that can throw out a runner & pitchers. & teach players how to steal a base (a lost art), a base stealer really shakes up a pitcher. With a deader ball we need to take every advantage. IMO a stolen base helps rally a team. So yes crank up the base stealing machine & learn to shut down the competitor. Baseball is back.

Can Catcher Be Where the Twins Find Offense?
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Cubs will have to offer him a QO, he'll probably won't take it so the club who picks him up will have to ante up a high draft pick. That'll drive down some bidding so I doubt he'll get what he wants. If the bid is low enough we'll have to figure out if we want give up a draft pick for him.- 20 replies

I'm not crazy about any catcher that can play multiple positions, I want them to master the catching position. If they can really hit & catch then yeah have them DH or even play 1B. Only catcher I like is Noah Cardenas and he's a ways away. And I'm not sure of his defense yet

Can Catcher Be Where the Twins Find Offense?
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
IMO Jeffers, like Kepler are stuck in a bad rut, my patience w/ him is less because of his defense (except for his framing, which will soon become obsolete). Contreras bat will be welcome or a trade w/ TOR or ATL if they're satisfied w/ Pina as their back-up. Still do we have what they want in trade? mainly a front-line pitcher. We have to be creative. IMO Bogeart would be comparitive to Correa in price and I think Bogeart will be gone before Correa.- 20 replies

Do the Twins Want a Platoon Behind the Plate?
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I doubt that they'll trade Jeffers, but to obtain Jansen, TOR wants a front-line pitcher. We can obtain a front-line pitcher thru a 3 way trade w/ MIA, MIA need a LH hitter & Stallings didn't work out so they could use a catcher. I like a LH/RH platoon which makes it easy to choose which catcher will bat against LHPs.- 32 replies

Do the Twins Want a Platoon Behind the Plate?
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Castro/ Garver was a great team! wish they could've kept Castro one more year. Narvaez is a pretty good defensive catcher & I think he could bounce back to be an above average hitter. If I had my way I'd ditch Jeffers all together & go after Jansen (TOR).- 32 replies

Will a Catcher Ever Win a Batting Title Again?
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Mauer was very unique & productive as a catcher plus he was a very good defensive catcher that took a lot of pride in his catching. Looking at his #s he needs to be in the HOF. I'd love another Mauer right now & sign him to a big contract. But back to your question if a catcher will ever win a batting title? I'd say yes there are good left-handed catchers coming up & some in college that could grow a horn. Dalton Varsho is an unicorn, while not catching he plays CF!
