Twins Trade Candidate: Emilio Pagan
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed clearing Rooker was a good overdue move. But Paddack's 4.03 era isn't great, his last 4 starts were against KC, DET, BAL (before they got hot) & OAK. -
Twins Trade Candidate: Emilio Pagan
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Everyone passed up on Paddack & Pagan last year, any doubt that anyone might have had before were cleared up with the Twins. Paddack wasn't remotely great with us, he hadn't really contributed anything this year & will contribute very little in '23. Although some team might take a chance on Pagan but they won't give up anything for him. -
Why Would the Twins Pay Anyone but Carlos Correa?
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I believe Turner & Swanson will return to their previous teams (LAD & ATL), the others with options will also stay home. If they want Correa they need to go out & get him not just wait around to see if anyone will land him if not, then low ball him. And if we don't get him we'll be standing around sucking our thumb, hoping to scape up a SS some where or maybe they think we'll get lucky again. If we can't sign him right away, then we go right into plan B.- 86 replies

Doctor Gast’s 2023 Payroll Blueprint
Doctor Gast replied to Doctor Gast's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
This my updated plan B roster, if we go with not signing Correa. I traded away basically Kepler, Jeffers, Urshela for Marquez (SP), Kiner-Falefa (SS) & Jansen (C). FAs were Cruz (DH)& Narvaez as back up catcher. With extra $ we could sign a FA OF slugger and send Celestino to AAA Ober, Varland, Winder & Maeda are my long relief and a revolving 5th SP. Once Lewis comes back Kiner- Falefa can slide over to 3B where he won a GG -
C: Danny Jansen ($4.00M) 1B: Alex Kiriloff ($0.70M) 2B: Jorge Polanco ($7.50M) 3B: Jose Miranda ($0.70M) SS: Kiner-Falefa ($6.50M) LF: Nick Gordon ($0.70M) CF: Byron Buxton ($15.00M) RF: Trevor Larnach ($0.70M) DH: Nelson Cruz ($7.00M) 4th OF: Kyle Garlick ($0.70M) Utility: Gilberto Celestino ($0.70M) Utility: Luiz Arraez ($4.50M) Backup C: Omar Narvaez ($5.00M) SP1: Sonny Gray ($12.00M) SP2: Tyler Mahle ($8.00M) SP3: Germain Marquez ($15.50M) SP4: Joe Ryan ($0.70M) SP5: Bailey Ober ($0.70M) RP: Jhoan Duran ($0.70M) RP: Jorge Lopez ($3.00M) RP: Griffin Jax ($0.70M) RP: Jorge Alcala ($1.00M) RP: Caleb Thielbar ($2.00M) RP: Kenta Maeda ($3.00M) RP: Josh Winder ($0.70M) RP: Varland ($0.70M) Payroll is 26.86% under budget

Twins Trade Candidate: Gio Urshela

There's many variables but I see him being traded before the deadline, much like a Cruz type trade.- 34 replies

This stinks worse than '21, when they got rid of Rosario & depended on Cave to man LF & sub CF with expectancy for Larnach & Kiriloff to help out. They put too much dependency on Cave which they should have known that this wouldn't work out especially in CF and 2 unknowns Larnach & Kiriloff. Result was a hugh chasm in the OF, that couldn't be filled. Here they are depending on sub par SS Polanco which more than likely get hurt (because SS is too hard on him physically), limp along until Lewis is ready & be lost for the whole season, Who will man 2B? Arraez? Arraez has no range, With the banning of the shift, GBs will bleed through the INF like a sieve. Along with Jeffers manning behind the plate (runners will run at will) and if they don't solve the absense of long relief, their whole pitching staff will absolutely blow up shortly after the season begins. Long before Lewis is ready to play. If they are so blind as to follow through with their stupid "plan", I'll stop following the Twins. Because they are following the same course as the "twinkies", that almost forced the Twins out of MN. And this time there'll be no Carl Pohlad to bail them out!

The Twins Have All Eggs in Ryan Jeffers’ Basket
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good question, he does have a good arm and has shown ability there but he could improve his pop up time overall. Plus he has greatly improved his pitch framing, for what that's worth. As I looked more intensely, Toronto has 3 excellent catchers, They'll keep Kirk but maybe they'd be open to deal Jansen or Moreno, they still have some good prospects coming up, Maybe if they like someone from the Twins we could swing a trade or get creative & do a 3 way trade.- 23 replies

Twins AFL Report (Week 2): Austin Martin is Blowing Up
Doctor Gast replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
My 1st take of your title "Martin is blowing up" was negative, that he was declining. Glad you meant it as positive. I'm really curious how he did in CF because he has too little time there and he could better suit the Twins there.- 27 replies

Big Questions on a Pair of Relievers
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
IMO Enlow has more value. Like what was discussed, Enlow has more potential and be interesting how he responds this year if he survives the crunch. As always I'd like to see trades to help reduce players on the 40 man, so we can keep Enlow to see what he has.- 19 replies

Twins AFL Report (Week 2): Austin Martin is Blowing Up
Doctor Gast replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Thanks Steve for these updates, I saw that Martin had hit a HR earlier so I was eager to see his line for the week. Although he's not a slugger, HRs will come as he gets stronger. A little disappointed that Julien & Isola aren't getting the playing time they need. Julien is doing well but Isola isn't. Pegueros looks promising.- 27 replies

Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with everything you said, Karbo. We need a strong starting catcher, I don't want Sanchez even if he has a stronger arm. (FA) Narvaez is still my choice- 23 replies

2B is exactly where Arraez shouldn't be. You don't need an arm at 2B, you need range. And that where Arraez absolutely sucks. Even with the extreme shift, GBs would easily get by him. Now with the shift banned, it'd be disasterous with Arraez at 2B. Celestino is still basically a rookie, Not hitting a cutoff man is a rookie mistake which can easily be resolved,

Love your article, Cody. I really like statcast (to hep measure range & arm strength) in which it help support our eye test. These results are astounding! #1 Celestino defense is underrated, his arm strength is surprising. #2 Arraez arm strength is even more surprising, My take is that they should work with Arraez more at 3B, so we have Kiriloff at 1B, Polanco at 2B & Arraez at 3B for RHPs. My guess would be Buxton & Correa 1 & 2. How did Jeffers rate? Statcast should be used much more to evalute defensive skills & increase more the value of defensive WAR.

The Twins Have All Eggs in Ryan Jeffers’ Basket
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Is the FO right by putting all their eggs in the Jeffers basket? I've thought of Jeffers as a back up catcher, 1st a back up to Garver and later to Rortvedt. Now with Garver & Rortvedt gone we have tremendously downgraded our once dominating catching depth. If I had to trade a catcher it'd have been Jeffers. Jeffers is a much more valuable trading chip that could be used injunction for a frontline pitcher, and sign FA Narvaez, to platoon with Garver. The game is evolving into a more small ball philosphy. That means more stealing bases off of Jeffers because of his arm. Also the robo ump is coming that will negate Jeffers's pitch framing forte'. Both changes will help baseball but will hurt Jeffers. FO should have seen this coming. Is the FO right by putting all their eggs in the Jeffers basket? IMO they were way off.- 23 replies

TopGunn#22’s 2023 Payroll Blueprint
Doctor Gast replied to TopGunn#22's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I see you like Trevor Rosenthal and I like Narvaez as catcher so we can go after Correa -
'21 left a very sour taste in our mouths. There was a lot of "positive hype" surrounding Happ, Shoemaker to the point many lauded that rotation as our best since Santana/ Liriano. Also Colume' was going to be our next great closer. I didn't fall for that BS, how can a soft tossing LHP ever succeed in a RH hitting division? I didn't think that they could fix Shoemaker and if CWS didn't want Colume', there must be something wrong. '22 that trade for Paddack & Pagan, they should fire the guy who's responsible for that disaster. But concerning Bundy, if they used him right, I figured he'd be useful. When they used him right he surpassed my expectations. When they used him within his profile he was great, beyond his profile he was ineffective. But he still gave us a lot of quality innings. They knew exactly what they were getting when they got Archer. Archer practically didn't have spring training but yet he surpassed many expectations and gave us many quality innings. I was hoping that the Twins would perfect his circle change-up (a key that would unlock his carreer much like what happened to Johan Santana) but that didn't happen, I was dissapointed but his change-up was still good enough to sneak in for SOs to offset his FB/ slider (but that didn't happen). But his greatest contribution was his mentoring young pitchers, which many overlook. The "negative hype" against Bundy & Archer gives us a false picture of reality. We had a very talented rotation but weak. Bundy & Archer weren't the reason for over stetching the rotation & over burdening the BP. It was the absence of our plethora of talented long RPs (our strongest pitching force) that weren't used in that capacity.

Doctor Gast’s 2023 Payroll Blueprint

When Buxton, Larnach, Kiriloff & Gordon healthy, I'd concede and say that Celestino could use some time in AAA to start the season. Then have Garlic platoon against LHPing. -
Doctor Gast’s 2023 Payroll Blueprint
Doctor Gast replied to Doctor Gast's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Thank you Old Goat, most of Celestino's games were in CF, there defense is the most valuable ( games could be won or lost there). Celestino is sound in health (with the health of Buxton, Kiriloff & Larnach in doubt, it's good to know that you can depend on Celestino will be around) , he's a RH bat and he has very good defense, When Buxton started out his OPS weren't that great, Arraez's OPS isn't that great. Celestino's OPS was better before it dipped at the end but I see his OPS increases every year as he gets stronger & more aquainted w/ MLB, Arraez is not a slugger but he serves a purpose and so does Celestino. -

Thanks Tarheel, I slipped to mention him as a FA signee, in my summary. -
We've had the core to get it done the last 2 yrs but the problem has been management. Their big excuse is injuries but I say many of those injuries are due to poor management. Nothing will change until management changes their plan. I don't think next year will be a make or break year, for that to happen ownership need to care enough to see what's really going on.
