Good idea Minny! As Guillorme is given more playing time, that'll increase the projected WAR -
Again? The Twins Lose Carlos Correa to the Mets.
Doctor Gast replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As I stated before NYM should be motivated to move Guillorme which means they should accept any 2 low lottery tickets for this veteran frustrated SS that has subbed Lindor at SS for a few years. A place where Correa now fills. Guillorme is worth much more than a couple of low lottery tickets, to fill our chasm at SS. There are many scenarios, if the Twins would be interested in Carrasco they'd give up 1 very low lottery ticket. -
Independent of what Correa does, signing Gallo was a big mistake. I admire SF's ability to see that they made a mistake and quickly admit that and resolve it. I wished that our FO had the same character trait, instead of not admitting their mistake & resolve it, they double down. Making a bad situation worse. That is my point.

Again? The Twins Lose Carlos Correa to the Mets.
Doctor Gast replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When the Mets were rumored to be in on Correa, I texted that they were our greatest rival. Because they had the money & they had best chance of advancing to the WS. After SF signed Correa, I admitted that I was wrong. I know that they have Lindor, the other teams that bid on "the top 4" had pretty good SSs (except MN) but they still went out to try to nab one. NYM will do anything to buy a WS. Now is the perfect opportunity to trade for Luis Guillorme NYM) as our main SS. Platooned with Farmer they could be an awesome duo, plus adding immensely to our INF quality lacking depth. NYM should be motivated to move him especially because this news, He should come very cheap. Guillorme is a SS profiled utility player. A slick glove, strong arm with good instincts. He's a Arraez type hitter that when given the chance to bat regularly, he can put up some pretty good offensive #s. There is no doubt in my mind if given the opportunity to play at SS on a regular basis he can shine. This could be our best move of the offseason. FO jump on this one!!!!! -
Right now we have only Farmer but we have to continue to go outside to find a platoon to pair w/ him. Lewis is our best chance but we'll have to see coming mid '23 season how long his reign will last. Polanco never profiled as a SS. If Gordon had to rely on his SS skills he should be still in AAA or gone, keep him in the OF where he excels. Javier & Holland is in the same boat that Gordon was in, IMO Lee won't start at SS & Martin won't stick, Miller could stick but he's still far away, Let's see if Lewis can reign that long.

I have my doubts about Eovaldi, I'd love Adames but MIL has said he's not for sale & the price will be very high. Glad you you didn't list any SS FA leftovers.

The Joey Gallo signing makes sense, actually
Doctor Gast commented on Greggory Masterson's blog entry in Brewed in the Trough
Because Gallo has played CF, doesn't make him a CF. He doesn't profile there so keep him out of there. For me that is a reason not to sign him, to keep the temptation away from management to play him there. His true flexibility is corner OF/1B/DH there we have a overflowing glut throughout the organization because FO has a fetish for big bats. I believe the shift ban would greater benefit Kepler over Gallo. Because Kepler tried to adjust to the shift by changing his swing to go the other way (which was very unnatural for him) so it's easier for him to get back to his old more natural swing. While the NYY got Gallo to try to lift everything, which didn't translate into that many HRs but increased his already exuberant SO rate. We can't fix Gallo because MN has the same philosophy as NYY. In most cases Gallo hit HRs when his team didn't need them & SO when they did. Gallo will take away playing time from those who need it & probably trade away players who are needed more. FO don't throw away good money just because you failed to sign Correa. Use it wisely & save up to sign KBO's Jeong-Hoo Lee (grandson of the wind) next off season. -
Joey Gallo Is A Land of Contrasts
Doctor Gast replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I believe Gallo isn't a clutch hitter, when you need him hit a HR, he'll SO. NYY wrecked the little good that he had by stressing launch angle & etc., The hope for MN straightening him out is nil because MN has the same philosophy. His BA should improve but he'll be taking up space of a Twin that needs it. 6 corner OF LH bat is lunacy even if you plan to trade some of them. -
What Can Nick Gordon Do for an Encore?
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I didn't have much faith in Gordon in the INF. So back in 2020, if he had made it to the MLB, I think he would have been a wash & out of the Twins. But what seemed to be a set back, turned to be an opportunity in '21 where was given an a chance in the OF where he showed prominence. The root word for crisis in Chinese is opportunity. In the OF I had faith in him & believed he could improve in '22, he surpass my expectations. '23 I believe he'll continue to improve and make us proud if he's given the opportunity. That is problem, with Larnach & Kiriloff coming back healthy and signing of Gallo together with Kepler. That makes 5 corner OF lefty bats competing for 2 open positions. Gordon is Buxton's primary lefty bat sub, which we need him sharp by playing him as much as possible and makes the Gallo signing all that more idiotic -
Twins Need a Minnesota Miracle
Doctor Gast replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with you rv78, Our gaping hole is SS that was left by Correa. Farmer doesn't do a good job hitting against RHPs and we need someone good at utility. We need a profiled SS that can hit RHPs to start the lion's share at SS. Farmer then can platoon at SS & cover utility. But their redundant move of signing Gallo doesn't instill confidence in the fan base. The miracle is to see how they can transform this deal into a positive transaction (like water into wine). I don't mean if Gallo improves, I mean how to justify this redundant glut of corner OF lefty bats. The other miracle I'm waiting for is management to change their mindset of ignoring our greatest pitching asset, the spot SP/ long relief. If this miracle happens that could lead to the greatest miracle of all- winning the World Series- 81 replies

" We need to analyze what has gone wrong in the scouting, drafting, and developing of pitching prospects and change our approach there. If the Twins and Pohlads really want to have an impact playoff run, then they need to strip it down for the next 2-3 years and then rebuild it back up." I agree with you here where we need to improve our player evaluation which effects our scouting, drafting, rule 5, FA selection & trading. Needs evaluation, not drafting big bats/ weak glove where DH is their best position and hoard them. We need to draft athletic players that can stick at CF, SS & catcher & hit enough to hit average for their position. And when we have a glut in corner OF lefty bats we don't sign a corner OF lefty bat restoration project. The pipeline isn't gushing yet and it seems some players have problems hitting at the MLB level so we need to reevaluate our development & coaching programs, And players that don't know how to do the basics like bunting or stealing or advancing a base. I haven't liked how they manage their pitching structure and not giving the proper rest with treatment to their players. We've had a pretty decent core where we could have gone on a pretty fantastic roll but due to the previous reasons listed above, they have short circuit all our potential. Ideally is to have some prospects to ease into the needed areas & eventually others to take over core players positions when they move on. There we have steady influx of veterans to rookie balance. I'm not in favor of an immediate tear down & depending on prospects who aren't ready to fill those positions. We experienced that in the OF in '21 & it was disastrous. Now apply that to the OF, INF & rotation, it'd be a good way to destroy this franchise. If it helps the team I'm all in favor of trading anyone. We can't trade Buxton. Kepler & Polanco's trade value are on their low side (which it wouldn't be prudent to trade them now unless the trade reflect their true value) and we have no one to sub Polanco right now. We shouldn't be trading Gray or Maeda because They are on their last year and not worth very much combined, Mahle is worth more than what he is and we don't have anyone who comes close to match their performance. Jeffers trade value has been steadily dropping we should trade him before he's worthless. Arraez trade value has been falling but recently he has hit a unsustainable high & he's replaceable so he's a good trade candidate. We shouldn't be trading any of those players for a bunch of low lottery tickets, they should be for fulfilling a need. We have a great need for a future catcher, Endy Rodriguez is a great trade target. Losing is terrible for morale especially year after year. Prerequisite for any transformation of roster is dealing with management problems 1st. Otherwise we'd be in rebuilding mode perennially.

Not too excited about any of them. Not really quality depth in where we need it. De Leon looks pretty good if he stays healthy same with Murphy if he finds control.

"Signing Gallo is hardly a worthwhile signature move of the offseason, but it does represent the first true effort by the front office to raise the 2023 team's ceiling, as opposed to filling holes and bolstering its floor. We need more of that going forward." We don't need any adding to an already abounding glut of corner OF lefty bats. Ideally we need to maintain 3 such players we need to trade the other 3 to address our other needs of SS, frontline SP and near MLB ready catcher prospect. IMO RPs & impact RH bat can still be had in FA. None of those in this glut has especially high value, which could we trade? Gordon? no way he's too valuable to us for us to lose and I believe he has a higher ceiling. Kepler, Larnach and Kirloff are low in their trade value and I deem their future has higher ceilings than Gallo this coming year. That leaves only Wallner, which many will not like to hear. There's interest in Kepler, but are they willing to give his true value in a trade injunction for a frontline SP or just a couple of lottery tickets? Maybe we can get good value good value from Wallner & Kepler. Now with the addition of Gallo we need to trade one more player who will that be? Or maybe Kiriloff's rehabilitation isn't going so well? Then why don't they tell us? Yankees have the same mindset on hitting as we do, hit moonshots, elevate launch angle etc. The Yankees wrecked his swing and I don't think we can fix it. Gallo (like Jeffers) is going down the same road as Sano. IMO we aren't raising any ceiling, but adding to a problem & not filling any holes.

"Stepping Back" Isn't an Option
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Totally agree with you Cody. Rebuild is not the answer. The problem is poor drafting, their idea of the best player is big bat/ small glove (Lewis is an exception) and then hoarding them, while key positions lack quality & depth. I do admit that last year was a vast improvement over prior drafts. Poor player evaluation & profiling which effects the drafting, promoting, rule 5, FA signing and trading. I can throw in poor development and coaching too. Lot of our problems have been injuries which most can be tied to mismanagement. Bad philosophy of focusing on "moonshots" which doesn't mean more prolific in HRs but more in SOs & FOs, while neglecting the other more important aspects of the game. Therefore the problem hasn't been the players, it has been to to the previous factors. If the previous factors are not addressed then we'll be in continuous rebuild like PIT. PIT knows how to evaluate players but they've had problems to develop them. If they start to rebuild & Flavine is not fired then I'm done with the Twins- 53 replies

It makes absolutely no sense to trade either of them. None aren't worth much being in their last year, with Maeda you can get a poor lottery ticket if you're lucky. We need to be improving our rotation not subtracting. We need to be extending Gray not trading him. Anything we get in return more than likely wouldn't pan out. This Gray & Maeda trade talk has the stench of the Rogers trade because they didn't want to extend him. And we all know how well that turned out. I agree that Winder, Varland and SWR should be getting more playing time. Long relief is where they are better suited at this stage of their growth. Of course teams have interest in getting them on the cheap. If either of them are traded by this FO together with this Gallo signing, it's grounds for their termination due to incompetence.

It was simply a terrible trade all a way around. Simple misevaluating & mismanaged opposing players by both teams. Rogers started great but because of not being used according to his profile he soon faltered (mismanagement). Pagan was misprofiled and thrown into the closer role, Instead of quickly reassessing the situation, they doubled down (mismanagement). Paddack hadn't been that great for SD, therefore they were trying to shop him. His arm problem was well known, many teams didn't bite but MN regretfully did. Rooker & Medina were throw ins. I'd have to when he try trade Rooker long before, when he was worth something. So who lost the most in the deal? my answer is a resounding MN! If we hadn't made the trade. We'd have Rodgers to win those games that Duffy & Pagan lost for us plus kept us competitive in the rest. SD would have kept Paddack which quickly be lost to TJ and in need for closing if Pagan would be used he'd suffer the same outcome. To me there is no contest.

Minnesota Twins Sign Joey Gallo
Doctor Gast replied to Theodore Tollefson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
OK, I vented. I'll give this FO the benefit of the doubt. FO fetish of hoarding big bats and focusing on "moonshots" has killed Simmons and Sano careers offensively with Jeffers on the way. Yankees has the same theory and it spoiled Gallo, we aren't going to help him. It absolutely make no sense to have 6 LH hitting corner OFers. Are we trading 3 of them? Kepler, Larnach and Kiriloff we'd selling low; Gordon we absolutely need to sub Buxton (don't be deceived Gallo can't play CF); That leaves our Wallner. There's a lot of interest in Kepler is there any way we can recoup his projected value? Still that makes Gallo very redundant, especially at $11MM. It otherwise makes no sense and it better be one heck of a trade. FO good luck because I can't fathom any such trade. -
We need MLB INF depth desperately, we don't even have an INF utility player yet. I was hoping that this FO would pick a SS to platoon with Farmer via trade. Farmer would then be utility/ SS platoon. But gauging by their last action I wonder if they really know what this team needs. I'm afraid that what happened in '21 where we had very little OF proven depth. Quickly everything became unraveled where they threw Celestino into the fire long before he was ready and got burnt. The same scenario could appear in the INF this season & Lee could very likely come unto the scene long before he's ready with similar results. Under the ideal situation, Lewis should be the 1st to enter the '23 season because he is the future leader of the team and I'd like to see Lee to be seasoned a little more in the minors. Lee, Martin & Lewis could make a pretty good future trio

He can play CF? that's BS. You can stick anyone in CF, that doesn't mean he can play there. So FO please burn this out of your mind, so you don't make this disaster worse. I have to say this FO is clueless. They can't make a good deal unless someone comes & slaps them along side the head and hand it to them & hope they don't drop it which sometimes they do.
