  1. It was clear Maeda wasn't right today. Painful to let him flounder out there until the game is out of reach.
  2. Fantastic news. It's early, but things feel different this year on the field - and off.
  3. Delighted to see Arraez do well -- I loved seeing him as a Twin so thoroughly enjoying being up to bat.
  4. I hate to see Arraez leave. It was a pure joy to watch him hit - and the Twins really need hitters who get on base. Heck, he won a batting title. I will never forget the time he stood in at the plate for Cron -- working his way to a walk in a heroic at-bat. Arraez has heart, he so clearly loves the game. He worked hard to strengthen his knees and his durability in the last season.
  5. https://dodgersway.com/posts/dodgers-reportedly-may-have-savior-on-trevor-bauer-trade-front-twins-01gpewt0jcev Don't know if this is true, hope it is NOT. The Dodgers did the right thing, Bauer is a toxic and repellent person, accused by multiple women of sadistic sexual violence. I would be disgusted if the Twins get involved with this.
  6. The most unlikely has happened if this pans out -- the Twins front office comes away with a win in off-season trading. Correa is a great ball player who will be an anchor for this infield AND a team leader. I liked hearing, for example, that he helped Miranda in the offseason. So, ok, the journey to this deal was meandering to say the least, but this is positive news for the Twins and the weary fandom in an otherwise bleak off-season.
  7. Wish the Twins had re-signed Urshela. What a blighted off season.
  8. Absolutely not. A terrible idea.
  9. Arraez is my favorite Twins player. I would be very sorry to see him go.
  10. Arraez may not be in the same category as Albies, Acuna, et al, but he is in a highly desirable category of his own. He won the dang batting title and he's a fighter at the plate with some truly remarkable at bats. He did just fine at first base. He worked hard last off season to get stronger. His work ethic is outstanding and he's well liked by his teammates. He's not a conventional ball player, but he's a special player - in the best sense.
  11. The last couple of games the Twins have made a game of it - exciting to watch and fun to root for. The trades for pitchers raised the quality of the staff and are really important to the psychology of the game -- the Twins batters feel the pitching staff is in this thing with them. Wish the call had gone their way today, but this can fire up and unite the team. It sure fired up Rocco, and I'm sure the players felt supported by him, too.
  12. I guess they see something in the analytics for Pagan, but the eye test says otherwise. So does the score. And every game when the starter is pulled early (which is literally just about every game), I feel a sense of existential threat when it could be Pagan time. It diminishes a bit when we're leading by seven runs or more.
  13. Such a promising talent. Best wishes to him and for his full recovery.
  14. We got some new bullpen arms, so it was pretty sad to turn the game on in time to see Sonny exit in the 6th and watch runs score against Pagan and Duffey. I know the offense needs to find some consistency, but wish the management would change up their pitching strategy.
  15. Crushing news for Lewis. A terrible break for such a promising young talent. Very sad to see this news.
  16. Polanco is perhaps THE Twins player in recent years who remains on the field, quietly playing through injuries. It would not be surprising to learn after the fact that he is trying to stay on the job with a bad ankle. He has made some sparkling defensive plays at second and earlier in the season he had some clutch hits. I respect Polanco and I think this article underestimates him and his value to the team.
  17. Funny! A good fan base roots for the team and also should feel it's ok to question things. It's understandable Twins fans are a little sensitive given the playoff history of local teams at this point. But yes, the level of vitriol is high (society-wide, not just baseball).
  18. One thing to add to the discussion: I have loved reading that the club this year enjoys playing together, that they are meshing. My impression is that the vibe and energy changed when Donaldson left and Correa arrived in the clubhouse. Sanchez was the price we paid, but it's no surprise - Yankee fans couldn't stomach his poor defense or his strike outs (before Sano's injury, I winced when I saw lineups with both Sanchez and Sano). Urshela has made some great defensive plays. Overall, I'm just excited to see the young talent emerging - Royce Lewis looks really sharp right off the bat.
  19. Rocco Baldelli, the Twins manager, put these words by his name: "George Floyd should be breathing right now. We have a lot of progress to make. A lot. Remember his name. Remember what happened." Good for him. I personally don't think any arena of life, including sports which is so deeply shaped by race -- gets to declare immunity from involvement when the society is in such distress. I am glad the manager weighed in and hope that readers of this column who are complaining here about what they see as the "politicization" of sports appreciate that he is speaking out of a sense of our common humanity (not tribal politics). That's where our attention needs to be.
  20. Thank you Nick, for writing on this subject. The history of sports is inalienable from the history of politics and race. With regard to this moment, basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabar explained in the LA Times: "African Americans have been living in a burning building for many years, choking on the smoke as the flames burn closer and closer. Racism in America is like dust in the air. It seems invisible — even if you’re choking on it — until you let the sun in.”' Athletes and sports writers who are helping to let the sun in deserve respect, not condemnation.
