They lost, but to just dwell on the offense for a bit: scoring 7 innings in the bottom of the ninth is no small feat. I am impressed that this team hangs around. Plus there were some great individual stories -- Miranda's hits-in-a-row streak is out of this world. Lee looks fantastic. Correa's grand slam...

Royce Lewis, Injuries, and Stupid Luck
Kummel replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When I see Lewis running the bases, I have thought more than once that he is moving in a way that is not to the point of "reckless" but is not really contained either. Not "smooth." I have worried that he might get injured, but of course we all are because of his injury history. -
Some of this is about the larger picture in baseball today. The league, teams, individual players routinely overvalue home run production. When too many players on a team swing for the fences, offense suffers. Not enough runners on base, and those runners often stranded. Arraez is the refreshing antidote to that situation. I appreciate that he does his thing (making contact), revels in it, does it extremely well. he is routinely over- or under-valued, in part it's this larger context that is shaping responses to him as an individual player.

Santana racking up RBIs!!! We have seen Kirilloff go from having a sweet swing to looking rough. In other years it turned out he was injured. I wonder what's up this time. When there are runners on and Vasquez is up, I tend to fast forward (I realize i'm asssuming "automatic out" at this point).

Should We Be Worried About Alex Kirilloff?
Kummel replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We are conditioned to assume the worst, because there is reason to associate poor performance at the plate for Kirilloff with injury. If for the first time it's a matter of adjusting and not dealing with injury, I have hope. He has a sweet swing when he's tuned in. -
Red Sox (Criswell) vs Twins (Ryan): 5/5/24, 1:10pm

Well, you literally can't win them all. This one felt lackluster early. -
Three Offseason Decisions Already Hurting the Twins
Kummel replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Platoon splits and veterans (some like Santana clearly past their prime) -- this risk-averse approach to creating "depth" takes away from the energy and excitement of the game (imo). Really look forward to the return of Royce, and I hope with time other bats return to form.- 144 replies

Week in Review: Series Win and a Serious Loss
Kummel replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ober looked injured. -
When Kiriloff was healthy this summer, he was a great player, a favorite to watch. So sorry to see this news -- it was evident for quite a while now that he was injured - he looked like a different player, lost that beautiful swing. Maybe he should have had surgery weeks ago? Regardless, such a shame. I wish him all the best.

Game Thread: Angels (Wentz) v Twins (Ryan), 9/34 @ 1:10pm CT
Kummel replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
I would guess Kiriloff is dealing with injury, something is impacting his swing. When he is good to go, he's a different batter. -
It's unbelievable. The young MN batters who have emerged in the latter half of this season are a joy to watch, none more so than Royce Lewis!

It was painful to watch Floro stay in there. Agree with others, when a pitcher doesn't have it, why let him continue to get pounded? That was giving up on the game early.

Week in Review: Another Backslide

What in tarnation. The occasional flicker of light goes out mighty fast. This team is the most inconsistent I have ever seen. -
Game Thread: Twins (Ober) @ Royals (Lyles), 7/29/23 @ 6:10 CT

The Twins are just all over the place this season. They looked like contenders after the All Star break, now they look overmatched by the Royals. -
3 Bold Predictions for the 2023 Twins Trade Deadline
Kummel replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
These sound like trades for the sake of trading. The offense has picked up, thanks largely to the young players. Why trade Wallner -- he is the offense you are looking for. Why lose a young hitter with power and with years of team control? This time, don't give away the farm.- 35 replies

Should the Twins Shop a Young Corner Bat?
Kummel replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's hard to answer the question readily about Wallner vs Larnach, because as you note, Gallo clogged the pipeline. It's hard to understand the thinking with that one. Well, actually we know the thinking because we heard early in the season that the Twins were confident they could improve Gallo's offensive performance.- 54 replies

Add a bullpen arm. Get the young players into regular rotation: Julien, Kirilloff, hopefully Lewis soon. Stay with the lineups that were clicking in 2 games against the Mariners -- the ones without Buxton at DH. Can he go on the IL indefinitely? Definitely don't play both Buxton and Gallo (liked the move to pinch hit for Gallo in the Mariner game). I would move on from Gallo. Correa and Kepler looking better.
-
Twins found a winning or at least a workable formula in the 2 games they removed Buxton from the lineup. I'd try sticking with what works.

These are the most competitive games I can remember this season. Exciting games to watch, hurray! The offense is finally here. Taking Buxton out of the DH spot has unclogged the lineup. Moving Correa to leadoff is working out. And more than anything, Julien and Kirilloff -- WOW, they are a dynamic duo. What a great 1-2-3 punch. Kepler is hot now and playing with more heart. Imagine if Royce Lewis returns to form... More broadly, these are wins for a roster clearly working together to score runs vs assorted individual players focused on hitting bombs. It's really satisfying to see the teamwork in action.

The Twins have have been slow to act because they assumed the team would continue to win more games with Buxton in the lineup. That's patently not the case this year. It has been painful to watch. Recently it looks as if it might be making things worse for Buxton to keep sending him out there. He is such an all-in player, this must be hellish for him.

I remember it and have thought of it often as the season progresses. I happened to be at that game and people in the stands around me collectively gasped. Somehow he continued to play, and the vaulting incident was overshadowed in that day's news by the serious injury to Kyler Farmer, who was hit in the face by a pitch. Buxton's willingness to sacrifice his body has had a devastating impact on his career.

Week in Review: Winning Ugly in Oakland
Kummel replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree that keeping Buxton in as DH is painful and unhelpful at this point. Gallo doesn't inspire confidence, either. But I don't feel as pessimistic as the author. The Twins did generate some runs during the Oakland series and there are signs that the offense can pick up with the combination of young bats (Kirilloff, Julien, Wallner, unfortunately not Royce for now) and an improved Correa. Correa is now the leadoff hitter - that is a change the Twins have made - and it seems to be working. And while everyone's offensive production is down this year other than maybe Solano, the "contributing cast" (Solano, Taylor, Castro, Farmer) is solid, can pick it up.- 37 replies

Rumor: Top 50 Trade Candidates - Who Interests You?
Kummel replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The Twins could use another reliever, but the biggest concern i have is with the lackluster performance so far this year -- something that one trade can't fix.
