    Not sure why he would be a trade candidate. He epitomizes everything the Twins want: - productive - cost controlled - not a cancer Considering there is no immediate backup in the wings (Arraez was at first to protect his knees, Gordon is still a huge question) this would be pretty foolish. There is no way they would receive plus value on a trade here.

    Considering the rest of the team around them wasn't good, we know the answer there. I am not saying this is the only route we should go. I am saying that we have had success with some of these players in the past. They can be useful pieces to the bigger puzzle.

    I don't know... feels like a little bit of cherry picking here. Within the last 10 years, the Twins have also signed: Kevin Correia Caleb Thielbar Blayne Boyer Phil Hughes Tommy Milone Ricky Nolasco Erv Santana Michael Pineada Heck, even RIch Hill Even Carlos Correa was signed on a "make good" contract (albeit a pricey one). I would consider all of these to be "reclamation" projects that had various levels of success with the Twins, definitely more plus than minus. There are reasons why teams, and the Twins specifically, go after these guys. Some teams believe they can be fixed, some hope to "squeeze every last drop of baseball they have left". To me, it isn't necessarily going to after these guys, it is being more stringent on the leashes they are given and coming to terms on what is "sunk money" The Twins will not sign the big names. Given the equal offers, players will typically choose a bigger market team, a no-income-tax state, or warmer weather. Successful reclamation projects can go a long way.

    So basically, for the purposes of this article, we are talking about spending more money for a pitchers that provide no discernable upgrade over the pitchers we currently have... The only name I would consider for SP is Walker, but not at that price. Some of these guys COULD provide some depth in the BP. I would look at Stripling or Kluber (if they were willing to take that role). Kluber especially could flourish if he knew he was only going to throw 30 pitches per outing. I would also be willing to take the incentive laden flier on Miley. Still effective when healthy.

    Apologies, I was actually referring to Gray not seeing the forest, not you. No mocking intended. I meant that it was Gray who was not seeing the bigger picture. The Twins were doing him a huge favor by limiting his innings and not going through the lineup the third time. Gray's ERA is something like 10.00 the third time through. By allowing him to be effective, they have raised his value should he wish to leave. Tell him to keep his head down, do what he is told, produce another strong year, then he can go out and test the market

    Not sure about all the hate. You have a player that is outplaying his value on a relatively inexpensive contract. He may not be the offensive player we would all like him to be, but he still is a valuable piece. Two big things people are overlooking: 1) The change in shift rules will benefit him greatly. 2) It is basically a walk year for him, as he is playing for the team to pick up his option. I would like to see them give RF to a more offensive player, and use Kepler as the OF super sub / Byron Buxton insurance in CF.

    Thanks for the article, I always find these types of lists interesting. The general discussion always seems to be about how strong a team's system is now. It would be cool to spend more time on these types of hindsight articles to see how these groups ultimately progress. Not just for the Twins, but for organizations in general. Would help to provide a clearer picture of organizational strength.

    As has been mentioned in other comments, it would not surprise me if the Twins stood pat on their SP for 2023. Three potential quality SP coming back from injury, 2-3 guys on the cusp in the minors. Their is always risk, but this feels a little mitigated. I believe the Twins were not expecting to compete this year. I think all of the moves they made were for 2023, and the first half of 2022 was just exceeding expectations. Correa was just a bonus. Correa walking gives the team some flexibility here. They may make a FA move on a top(ish) guy if the price is right, but I do not see them moving any of their high-end prospects.

    Considering the Twins used him perfectly and got the most out of him, it would be hard to see another organization use him differently. Perfect example of not seeing the forest through the trees. The Twins limited Gray's innings to when he would be most effective and it worked (regardless of Gray's complaining to the media). Gray just needs to keep his head down and continue to pitch well for his next contract.

    He was a starter in the minors for most of his career. His track record there was not good. It would be hard to see this happening. I would like to see them continue to use him in high leverage BP outings. Please, please, please do not saddle him as the closer (the most overrated position in baseball)

    I think "spending" may need a little more clarification. If the Twins believe Lewis will be back in 23, is a 1/$5M contract for a defense-first SS too much? If they dont' think Lewis will be back (effectively) in 23, is a 1-2yr/$20-25 for a middle of the road veteran too much? I know the market is slim after the big names, but regardless the Twins currently have a gap and need to fill it with a few AAAA names at a minimum Could always bring Nick Punto out of retirement.

    I am not arguing your point, you are actually helping mine. It is hard to complain about salary with the Wolves and Vikings. The Vikings/NFL has a hard cap. The Wolves/NBA basically has a hard cap except for retaining their own players. It is public knowledge the Twins spend a certain percentage of revenue on player salaries. Agree or not, that is the world we live in and the team we root for. As I have stated many times, the Pohlads treat the Twins as a business. As such, decisions are not generally made on wins or losses, but based on finance. Pohlad and the Twins can afford to spend more money, they choose not to.     Pagan is the type of pitcher with good stuff that can't seem to make it work. Coaches think they can "fix" guys like this, which is why they get so many chances. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he went somewhere and lit it up next year.

    Bottom line is you only trade Gio if you are 100% giving the position to Miranda. You have a league avg 3B under a 1 year contract for a reasonable amount of money. Sign him, check the box, move on to bigger issues.

    Andrus is probably the perfect placeholder. Decent veteran that can hold the spot if Lewis takes longer to recover. Could look to spin him at the deadline if Lewis is ready or the Twins are out of contention. Only downside is Andrus provides zero positional flexibility. He is 100% SS.

    Well that's a pretty big leap from my argument. Looking to incite are you? Anybody want to go back and look at the Twins Daily discussions over the last year's of Joe's contract? They weren't about a post-concussion Mauer still providing value even though the contract was sunk money, they were mostly about his contract being an albatross. The argument is that pursuing top talent on a mega-contract comes with a built in understanding that over the last few years of the deal. the player's AAV will not be meeting the contract. The potential financial fallout is the risk determined at the time of signing. The negative public perception is commonplace. While many FO will kick the can down the road, (if anything) this FO has shown to be methodical in it's decisions.

    So many people calling out for the Twins to sign Correa to a long-term contract... I agree that if you are going to sign a player to an 8 year deal this is as good a choice as any. But... The anger and vitriol directed at Joe Mauer over the last few years of his contract should not be forgotten. Any contract of this length is going to look bad at the end. I honestly can't think of a contract like this that did not have 2+ years of "albatross" at the end. This has to be considered when offering this deal. Unlike Mauer, Correa is not a hometown guy. He will be destroyed locally if he bats .240 with avg defense over the end of his contract. The FO has to consider this as well. Considering the roller coaster that is Twins SP, you have to wonder if this is where they are willing to plant their flag, especially with Lewis in the wings. If I were the FO, I would offer him 8y/$280 with a player opt out after 4 years. My prediction: He signs elsewhere for more than that. The Twins sign a placeholder.

    Please do not misquote me. I have not defended Rocco, nor am I drinking the Rocco Kool-Aid. As seems to be the way today, you are either FIRE Rocco, or a Rocco defender. Middle ground is not allowed anymore. I am not attempting to change yours, or anybody's, mind. I just find it interesting that most of the arguments to fire, well anybody, are cherry-picked. Rarely is the body of work looked at as a whole, nor is the future looked at with objectivity. Being a Twins fan is extremely difficult. You have to accept that money, not winning, is the primary purpose. If they happen to win along the way, well great. I am sorry, but attendance was up. That is factual.

    Another question: With all the talk about how poor our pitching staff performed this year, how come nobody is bringing up the impact of losing Wes Johnson? The pitching coach for a (at the time) playoff team that has pitchers overachieving, voluntarily quits mid-season, then the pitching staff spirals after he leaves... There is a good chance that if Wes Johnson did not quit, this team would have made the playoffs and the view on the Twins would look much different now.

    Nice try, a point for effort. Apples and oranges. Of course I think Gladden should be fired, his incredibly poor broadcasting skills are straight forward and measurable. You can count the number mistakes he makes, the instances of incoherent language and rambling. The differences between him and other announcers. Most of the arguments here are based on opinions or unprovable situations. Can anybody here say with certainty that the trainer's approach is responsible for all of the injuries this year? Chances are better that the trainer was fired as a scapegoat rather than for his actions. We think we know, we may know parts or situations, but we don't know the whole story. Yet there is a call for the scorched earth approach....

    Human nature is to focus on negatives, not positive (if you don't believe me, turn on any newscast and count the time spent on negative stories vs. positive ones). It is no surprise to me that an article like this and others (especially the one on if Rocco could turn the fan base) result in 90% vitriol against the FO and coaching staff. It is easy to focus on the negatives, but let's be realistic here: Not sure how to quantify enthusiasm, but fans from 29 cities will be disappointed this year. Per game attendance was up 4k fans per game this year over last, while our per game attendance ranking is about the same as last year. Injuries were a huge issue this year. Not only for games lost, but also for guys playing through injuries. It is well documented that Buxton, Paddock, Kirrilloff all played a fair amount of time while injured. This is more cyclical than "blameable". This year the Twins lost 1570 days to the IR, last year it was under 900. Has the Twins health approach changed so much in that time? Every team lacks pitching. Period. The Twins made multiple moves to address their pitching, some worked, some didn't. Anybody remember the last time the Twins went out and signed a true #1 SP. Anybody? You could make the same argument with 15 other teams. The Twins will continue to use the farm to grow their pitchers and hopefully (occasionally) will hit the jackpot. Somebody better remind Sonny Grey what his ERA is the third time through the lineup (it is around 10.00). I would argue the Twins were protecting him as much as themselves. He should be kissing their feet that they have kept him in his wheelhouse. The Twins were 17th in errors, 16th in FP. Not the best, not the worst. Thanks to Tommy, there were some high profile ones here. I would be interested to know where the team ranked in bases taken. Last comment: For all of you calling for the FO and coaching staff to be fired... The grass is always greener...

    You lock up players that you expect to be part of your core for the foreseeable future Arraez has an offensive skill set that should age well. The question of his durability is valid. If the Twins are comfortable with him at 1B, then he would be a prime candidate for a 4+option contract. Miranda didn't exactly light the world on fire when he first came up. His defense is also a question as he could not secure a position through the season. He needs to show more before locking up years. Ryan is a "you know what you have" pitcher. Solid 3 on a good rotation, with flashes of 2. Probably needs another year, but if there is no arm/health issues, he would be a strong extension candidate that would not require a huge overpay. RP are always shaky. Duran's track record in the minors is not great. I would not consider extending him for at least 1 year, maybe 2. Make sure this year was not a fluke. Everyone else has huge question marks that would eliminate them from the conversation for now.

    The lynchpin in this process is the Twins opinion of Lewis. If they believe he will stick at shortstop, then there is no need to go out and commit the money and years to the FA. If they do not have confidence in his ability to stick, then making a run at one of the guys here makes sense. If they believe in Lewis, I would get word to Andrus to offer a 2/$20m contract with with $5m in playing time incentives. Provides some protection if Lewis needs more time to recover, with a decent veteran manning the position. Worst case scenario, you have Andrus on the books for an extra year. If they don't believe in Lewis, and Correa is truly considering a return to Minnesota, they would need to get him at the right price or years. Personally, my limit would be 6y/$200. I am sure the Twins have already made their 2nd best pitch to Correa. Their best pitch will come later in FA. He would be nice to have back, but re-signing him (realistically say 8y/$260m) would pretty much cap the Twins to sign any other big names for a few years. It would be a fairly large risk to take, especially with the SP rotation not looking strong long term at the moment.
