  1. My group stayed in downtown Ft. Myers last year and it worked great. Plentiful restaurants and breweries within walking distance; I recommend Izzy's for seafood. Outside of downtown I'm partial to Doc Ford's - get the grouper sandwich. My group really liked Pt. Ybel's beers, but all of the breweries were good. At the park I prefer seats in the shade for afternoon games and the outfield drink rail for night games.
  2. I thought a lot of Wichita players made big improvements last year, and I liked the aggressive style they played. I don't know how much credit Dinkleman should get for that but I like his move to the Saints.
  3. Buxton and Ryan are affordable excellence, where they both are in terms of contract and productivity should be something that GMs dream about. Trade Lopez if you must, but those two should be what you build around, not what you trade for more prospects.
  4. I've been to 2 games in the last week and the best thing I've seen is that Buck looks fantastic - 4 for 5, with an HR, double and 2 SBs. Zebby had the best outing of any of the pitchers I've seen. Is Allen Cerda any kind of prospect or is he just a minor league roster filler? He's looked good at the plate for my 2 games,
  5. Nothing more demoralizing than a bad bullpen. A clarification - the Tigers essentially threw in the towel and aggressively sold at the deadline. How trading Jack Flaherty and 3 other contributing players from the major league roster has spurred them to a 25 - 10 run is unexplainable and a reason the game is so damn compelling.
  6. Frustrating that the bullpen seems to be giving up a lot of walks after going 0 - 2. Both Okert and Thielbar walked Varsho that way, and with scorching hot Vlad Jr. batting next it didn't work too well. Too bad, their approach to hitting Gausman was excellent.
  7. Early in ST Ober threw 95 in a game against the Phillies and Bryce Harper asked how anybody ever hits him. Seems that since then he has gotten consistently lit up. Varland pitched great, was named a starter, and since then has struggled. You wonder how much is mental, or if both are fighting injuries. On the good side, Pablo and Joe look locked in already.
  8. If you are up against a trivia question of what MLB player was also a state tennis champion, believe it or not the man Gardy nicknamed Sammy Softball, Matthew LeCroy is the answer. Big man but apparently a very skilled all-around athlete, and from all reports a great guy.
  9. I thought the radio broadcasts with Provus and Gladden were excellent for 6 innings but Gladden should not be doing play by play. Please use this transition to allow Attebury to call 9 innings now.
  10. I think the Rocco quick hook narrative is probably from the 2020 playoffs. In game one Maeda gave up 2 hits and no runs through 5 innings, had thrown 91 pitches and was pulled; Romo ended up with the loss. In game 2 Berrios gave up 1 run on 2 hits through 5 innings and was pulled after 75 pitches; Stashak ended up getting the loss. Neither of those moves seems anywhere near as outrageous as yesterday's BJ debacle, but I remember both of those guys really throwing well and that the Twins bullpen was running on fumes at the end of the year.
  11. One thing to watch is how bad the visibility is for hitters with these late afternoon starts. If it's a big factor it might favor starting a predominantly breaking ball pitcher (Maeda) over Ryan. If you remember the game Sonny pitched with all of the strikeouts - that was a sunny late afternoon start and hitters seemed helpless against his breaking pitches.
  12. In an article on MLB.com Jim Callis just named Brooks Lee the favorite for AL rookie of the year in 2024.
  13. It takes most people a bit of an effort to go to a game, so out of respect for your fans I think that while the home team has a position player pitch at least some concessions should be free. For 4 innings of it last night the Cleveland fans should have gotten a refund.
  14. A number of weekend home games have been on this and last year. Sometimes the TV sports grid in the Strib or PP lists them in advance. Chris Williams now has 26 RBIs with the bases loaded this year, in about 15 at bats. Do the Twins have anybody with 5 yet? I believe Strawberry had 18 homers in 29 games with the Saints in 1996.
