  1. I DO miss Sporting News and all the stats I would pour over for an entire afternoon as a kid (I really think it's the memory I miss). Used to stand and wait at the deli for the delivery guy. I DO miss a memory ability to spit all those stats back out at the end of the week. Just where did that ability go <wide grin>.
  2. o. Altuve was absolutely the worst about it with 3 adjustments to each glove between every pitch. Must have OCD. o. And was it Hector Neris for the Astros who did the 3-4 "rock the baby" windup? Took him 15 seconds just to do that portion,. I can live with the vertical supports at Wrigley. Ticket sales always warned me of "obstructive view." Stayed away from those babies. Somehow, as a kid, I did not seem to have such a problem with Offermann Stadium in the '50s in Buffalo. Just expected with the $.50/seats.
  3. 12 quarts of tomatoes simmering into sauce with peppers, garlic and onions (all from the garden except for onions). Sourdough bread resting before the first stretches (no, wheat isn't mine. Dakota). Grateful to farmers. Eating tall this week.
  4. Gladden picked up the same issue re: WSOX which was raised here yesterday: Where are there minor league players??
  5. Sanchez down. Padres catcher Gary Sánchez broke his right wrist during this afternoon’s loss to the Phillies; Sánchez was hit by a 98 MPH fastball from Philadelphia reliever Jeff Hoffman. The pitch ran inside and caught Sánchez’s back wrist when he checked his swing. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/09/gary-sanchez-ji-man-choi-diagnosed-with-fractures.html
  6. Pitchers hitting. The 15" mound before 1969 Spikes up, barreling into 2nd base Eradicating the catcher with a body block Old Cleveland Stadium. Oh, what a barn. Games broadcast in black and white. Vertical supports in old stadiums that obstructed views. Listening to road games of Buffalo Bisons radio games. Teletype sound in the background and Bill Mazur reading what is occurring because he didn't travel on road games.
  7. Today the MLB celebrates Clemente. Every Pirate did a service work day. Ideal remembrance of the man who stood tall.

  8. It's Roberto Clemente Day, celebrated by MLB. Clemente is best known for his 12 Gold Gloves, 4 batting titles, BA over .300 for 13 seasons and he had 3,000 hits during his major league career. His humanitarianism shines just as brightly, having delivered food and baseball equipment throughout Latin America. Tragically, he perished in a plane crash at age 38 while taking relief supplies to an earthquake ravaged Nicaragua. I remember watching a weekend game on network TV. Clemente's arm was just phenomenal in throwing to 3rd and home. Almost made a cutoff man redundant.
  9. Lightening rod/issue. Lots of speaking re: FO (ergo field manager) seemingly using an over reliance on statistical approach to the game. I think some comments are generated by personalities of Falvey/Baldelli, some are from questioning the decisions made by the same, and some come from a shifting paradigm of field management surrendered to the FO. That is the nature of the game and I have seen these discussions for a very long time as a ball fan. I don't mind them a bit unless they become personal. I haven't seen that in this thread. All worthy opinions. "Let's play 2."
  10. Single games avail on StubHub. Season tix holders dumping tix.
  11. This was Joe Maddon's philosophy which is give me data, I assure you I will use it but don't bury me with it. I am getting to know my people, working on basics of ball, forming relationship with them and getting the most out of them. (My takeaway from his book.)
  12. While I don't care for Baldelli, the fault lies in a FO that would have had him for breakfast had he not used Vazquez. Lots of reasons to dislike Baldelli but he is performing exactly like FO desires. The field manager/FO structure and philosophy of the game has made a paradigm shift, often not for the better. Pendulum has swung way to one side. It will begin to ebb back but maybe not in my time or the time I would desire.
  13. Listened to the Dodgers whip up on the Padres 11-2. Lynn won his 11th (11-11, 5.94) but he served up his 41st meatball of the year, this time to Tatis. 41.. He is chasing Bert's record of 50. Bert did it in 271 innings; Lynn is at 166. Ratios: Lynn, .25, Blyleven, .18 or Lynn, 2.25 per 9 inn, 1.62/9 It's late. Hope I did my public math right.
  14. Rangers over Blue Jays, 5-0, 7th inn.
  15. Provus is growing more secure and has been critical at times.
  16. A's 3-0 over Astros, bottom of the 1st. Spoiling is nice,
  17. Rosario is one of those ballplayers you love or gasp at. For me, his erratic defensive playing (particularly throwing to wrong base or bypassing/missing the cutoff man) drove me nuts. Base running was always a pleasure from hell as well (winks). He needed a change of scenery and Cleve didn't work. He seems to have settled down in Atlanta.
  18. A's, 4-0, top of 9th over Houston. May to relieve bottom 9th.
  19. A's playing spoiler? Early, 3 complete. A's, 1-0 over the Astros. HR by... Rooker , 442 ft off Valdez.
  20. Arozarena. .208 last 15 games. Will he heat up for the series?
