  1. Typical pre game type of discussion but who pitches what game is far less important than how who ever pitches what game is able to execute their pitches and, above all, be the aggressor on the mound as opposed to being afraid of balls flying over the fences. I can still see Ervin Santana taking the mound with a 2-0 lead in the first inning and having no idea where the strike zone was or, worse, being afraid to throw a strike. Just go get 'em.
  2. I was looking forward to watching the game but if I can't, frankly, who cares. Especially Game 1 at Yankee Band Box which, if the Twins don't win no big deal. Formula is win both home games and 1 of 3 at the other place. TV used to be simple and any televised game in any sport was a big deal. Technology has made things more complicated instead of easier which is kind of ironic. I'll just follow the score and maybe Game 2 will be more available but I am not jumping through hoops credit card in hand just to see home runs and strike outs live. The highlights will be available everywhere.
  3. The unknown is why the games are actually played. No one can deny that there is a stigma and aura attached to the Yankees that has accumulated over the decades starting with Ruth and the House that Ruth built and continuing to the current stadium being the only one named after the team that plays in it. Maybe Orioles Park at Camden Yards counts; not sure. There is always that feeling that, even with a lead, things can fall apart in an instant. Ironic thing about baseball is that you don't directly compete against the other players like other sports other than the "game within the game" pitcher/batter competition. Even that is more like golf in that the pitcher is really competing against himself trying to execute pitches The rest of the 8 defensive players are really just playing the ball. The batter is trying to hit the ball, not the opposing pitcher. Point of all of this is that the Twins are not playing the Yankees, they are playing themselves and the baseball. That is the beauty of the game. Whoever executes that the best usually wins.
  4. Just wait. Ever heard of Bucky Dent? Anyway, can't wait for it to start no matter who starts. If anything defines the Twins this year other than "Great season", its that there is no set lineup. No matter what happens, as the line from one of the Rocky movies went, "No pain, no pain". Go Twins.
  5. This board has kicked Jonathan Schoop around all season for reasons beyond my comprehension. I predict that he will rise to the occasion if given a chance. I know, RLISP is high. Big whoop. Perfectly fine with him in the lineup especially against the Yankees who he played against many times as an Oriole and is not intimidated by pin stripes. Not that the rest of these Twins are either but Schoop is simply used to playing the Yankees. No big deal.
  6. All the hype preceding sports events is fun; the 2 weeks preceding the Super Bowl being the classic example. Then they actually play the game and all the predictions are out the window. Same here. The plan is fine until it falls apart. If you even want to call it a plan it should be very simple. 1) Know that you belong in the playoffs and expect to win every game. 2) Play loose...the pressure is on the other team. 3) No matter whether its the 3 Ts or the 3 Stooges-pitchers attack the strike zone. 4) Just let the game play itself out and execute, execute, execute. 5) Don't be too smart by half, just play baseball and don't beat yourself.
  7. I'm glad the Indians did not make it easy. They kept winning and got themselves into wild card contention so Twins may not be done with them yet. Twins did not back into this like they did in 2010. Congratulations to a true team effort. Everyone had their day or days. May not be a World Series year but I think this team is not done and will make it very interesting in the DS and maybe CS.
  8. What was fishy was the way he was inserted into a game almost immediately after traveling across the country straight to the park where the Twins were playing into a possible game deciding situation. I think his uniform name was done with a magic marker, That was a disaster and he has never really recovered.
  9. "Gibson can't throw his curve for strikes." By Old Twins Cap. Whether as starter or reliever that is the problem. Plus he can't spot his fast ball either. I think he should just aim for the middle of the K zone and rely on his lack of control to go to the edges. Using him in a critical situation in the playoffs is a scary proposition.
  10. I'm afraid that Buxton is, for lack of a better word, fragile. Don't forget the headache issue on top of the physical ailments. The future is an unknown and total guesswork based on hope. Right now its Sano for the simple reason that he's here and Buxton isn't and Sano is performing at a pretty high level. He also has the single biggest hit this season from which Cleveland has yet to recover.
  11. Not that anyone including Miguel cares, but I take back any negatives I have uttered/posted about Sano. Not only has he shown durability as an every day player but his offensive production has been in more and more critical situations. Maybe the grand slam against the Indians was the biggest hit of the season. I hope its Twins/Yankees in the ALDS. If so, the real pressure is on the Yankees, not the Twins. I hope the Twins just play loose and pitchers challenge the Yankees hitters. Don't nibble. Solo homers are fine. Its 2 walks and a homer that must be avoided.
  12. Kyle Gibson seems like a real good guy and the eColi illness from his work in the Dominican Republic speaks for itself. I just hope in his next outing that he challenges hitters and if every pitch he throws ends up in the outfield bleachers so be it. Something tells me they won't. No more 3 straight sliders in the dirt.
  13. I can't believe the Indians finish with 6 of final 9 games against Phillies and Nationals. Twins win tonight gives them an even 5 game lead with 12 to go and a favorable schedule. Can't ask for more than that. Sano's slam may be the single biggest hit of the season as it totally flipped the momentum as the season draws to an end.
  14. Well guess what is left for the Twins. An NFL schedule of 16 games. What NFL team wouldn't love to start the season with a 3.5 game lead and most of the schedule against 2nd tier teams? Its the Twins title (Central) to lose so lets just watch and see what happens. If they want it enough its there for the taking.
  15. Nothing worse (in baseball) than watching a pitcher who is afraid to throw strikes. Gibson relied way too much on sliders in the dirt. If you are afraid of any hitter you shouldn't be out there. It was painful to watch. Gibson looked like he needs to gain about 25 pounds. It is a shame because he has been a mainstay for years and has shown streaks of reliability for lack of a better word. Last night was very discouraging not because of runs allowed but because of his entire approach and demeanor on the mound. Tonight's lineup will be very interesting.
  16. Speaking of Garver, if the Turtle can catch and play first why can't Garver? When will Baldelli decide that the playoffs are not guaranteed and resting players for the playoffs is pointless if you don't make the playoffs? If tonight's game is washed out it could result in an effective wild card game makeup whereby which ever team, Twins or Nats, wins that game becomes a wild card and the other is out of the playoffs.
  17. "Still only 25" That is the point. Getting older does not help the injury situation. Plain fact is that Byron Buxton's career as a professional athlete is essentially over. He should have enough in his bank account, hopefully, to make his time spent worth while and proceed with the rest of his life. His retirement won't be immediate and he will no doubt be at ST next Feb/Mar but the handwriting is on the wall.
  18. What about Gibson against the Nats tonight, weather permitting? If its postponed, the makeup game could be critical and inconvenient for both teams. I hope they don't have to play one of those delay, delay, delay games just to get it in. If its postponed I hope its before game time. Cleveland is off tonight so they would have an advantage outright if Twins have an all nighter and then have to go to Cleveland.
  19. Biggest play in the game was the catch against the wall by Luis Arraez, in my opinion. A double could have gotten the Nats going and shaken Berrios. Instead the Nats never posed a threat and Berrios stayed on cruise control in attack mode. Arraez seems a one in a million player and the Twins had best hang on to him. I like the Twins' chances against Strassburg tonight. The lineup last night looks like it may be close to a playoff lineup now that regulars are dropping like flies. I would rather have "ball players" than raw athletic talent and last night the Twins fielded ball players.
  20. If the Twins think they can simply turn on the charm any time they want to they had better think again. If they lose tonight against the probably playoff bound Nats, they will be 1-3 on the current home stand against contending teams. Then they will have to win the next 2 to win the series and break even on the home stand before going to Cleveland. I suggest they play this game like there is no tomorrow because a long losing streak is not only possible but would not be surprising. How they play tonight is what I will be looking for, not so much whether they win. It starts with Berrios and whether he is in attack mode or not. Next is the lineup and it had best be a playoff lineup or as close as possible. If they use resting players and really not needing this game as an excuse, look out.
  21. The Pineda fiasco is the camel's back straw. Twins were not going a long way in the playoffs anyway and they have been fortunate in the injury category until now. I hope they can at least avoid sweeps (by the other team) in the next 2 series and then limp home against Tigers, WSox and Royals. The best teams finish strong. Twins started very strong, have managed to hold their own lately in a weak Central and now will probably simply hold on for dear life.
  22. I love this board and most of the threads but I do get a kick out all the micro analysis. Baseball is still baseball and the fact that the Twins won a game with 2 hits and a great throw to home plate as a result of the Fenway Monster bouncing a home run in any other park that would have been a walk off for the Red Sox into a throw to the plate that was a walk off for the Twins is the classic example of why you play the games and toss the micro analysis out the window as this is a classic example of a run on sentence. Just go out and play the games and start with beating the Indians tonight.
  23. Twins need to win today against the Red Sox. Talking about playoff match ups now; might as well speculate about next year's schedule.
  24. I know that the next 12 games have been highlighted in other threads but I believe their importance merits a dedicated thread. Twins can probably split or worse against Red Sox, Indians (6 games) and Nationals and still try to coast into the playoffs against White Sox, Royals and Tigers to wrap up the season. Truth is they need to do better than that if they expect to do much in the playoffs. The Nationals series is kind of like a consolation World Series as they are trying to catch the Braves is the NL East and are a leg up in the WC. Playing at Boston is always a playoff atmosphere and the 6 against the Indians need no explanation. Playing these 12 games that really matter in consecutive September days is a regular season baseball fan's dream. Go Twins!
  25. Twins are already way above expectations this year. I have said over and over that the 12 games after today's Tigers game will say a lot about prospects for the playoffs and, in fact, are de facto playoff games. Twins just have to stay healthy and starters have to be fearless. Never would pull for them to lose (although did come close during the Gardenhire tenure) just making it to the ALCS would be a fantastic outcome. Speaking of Gardenhire,(pointless I know) one of the many Gardyisms was "I hate second place". He has since done a wonderful job of making sure his teams finish no where near second place.
