  1. Diesel said "Sano had his breakout season last year. 34 home runs with a .923 OPS is nothing to sneeze at. And that was with a very slow start." On a team that hit 307 home runs for some unknown reason. I would just like to see him be available for an entire season one time. .247 average nothing great and he drove himself in 34 times so 79 rbi nothing to rave about.
  2. So if he is injured (again) or under performs they just throw him in at first base anyway for the next 3 years? All I mean is that neither he nor Buxton has proven themselves as dependable established Major League ball players. They have exhibited talent but not dependability or durability.
  3. Exactly, maybe even June or July is when I want to know where Byron Buxton is. He is one of those players who changes the whole dynamic of a lineup when he is on his game. Both he and Sano need to have breakout seasons this year or Twins brass will have to start making tough decisions about both.
  4. All kidding aside, a golf swing is actually very similar to a baseball batter's swing in that all that matters is how your body maximizes swing speed at impact. However, no 2 golfers accomplish that objective in exactly the same way. Most good golfers do look pretty much the same at impact but can look very different in other aspects of the swing. What bother's me about introducing a purely mechanical approach is that there is no one way. As Arnold Palmer said, "Swing your swing". Obvious flaws can be detected by a decent coach with the naked eye which is what I thought coaches are for. looking over pages of numeric gobbledy gook is a pure distraction.
  5. ".... Arraez is hitting .125 so far this spring...." Blasted forceplates. I guess Arraez forgot the formula. As far as the sloppy play goes, I still think that all the Grapefruit games do is get the retirees off the golf course and put money in the coffers. They do nothing to improve players skills leading into the season. Funny thing is that the players who aren't suited up for a game are probably on the golf course after pretending to practice for a few minutes.
  6. "“Linear wrist velocities at ball release correlate highly (r^2 = 0.82) with maximal posterior push-off shear force…Linear wrist velocity also correlated highly with vertical push-off force at MAP (r^2= 0.74), push-off resultant force at MAP (r^2=0.76), landing anterior shear force at BR (r^2=0.86), landing vertical force at BR (r^2=0.70), and landing resultant force at BR (r^2=0.88).” This is in Ted Williams's book. I take back everything. Why didn't I know this in Little League? Memorize this+ listen for banging on trash cans= hit 1000
  7. Ok he wrote a book about the "science" of hitting and didn't need force plates to do it. Twins led MLB in home runs and set a record last year. Can't wait to see how much better they do this year with these gimmicks to make them even better. Maybe they will just put the ball in play and go with small ball. After using force plates, Stan Musial was told that no way would he be allowed to hit from that crazy stance. Hank Aaron was told that he was using too much wrist action in his swing and needed to use legs and body torque more.
  8. I wonder what Ted Williams would have said about force plates. The only plate that counts home plate. Old cap said ...."you should fail"..... and mind clutter along with needless adjustment will lead to exactly that. Ok Donaldson, welcome to the Twins. Its your turn at the force plate. Sano you're next. Can't wait for March 26 at Oakland who is probably not using force plates. Any predictions?
  9. As far as the Mike Trout comment goes, this is baseball's version of the me too movement. They play in the same division so of course he and the Angels are "angels" and the Astros are a bunch of bums. Its an image thing. It seems that the MLB brass is more in agreement with me than with those who think the whole Astros team should be banned from baseball. They got caught with their hand in the cookie jar, so what? No one can prove they won a single game because of it and in spite of immunity granted no player has stated that it led to a single victory. Many say that Bobby Thompson knew the pitch that Ralph Branca threw before the shot heard around the world. ( I admit that I have been a devils advocate in this and I apologize for that. No more. Go Twins!)
  10. wombat posted ".....The Astro's scandal is what prompted me to write this, because I truly do believe the PGA and MLB are the only two major sports that are even remotely close to pure skill, talent, and honesty." I posed a golf analogy earlier, maybe in another thread, challenging anyone who is aghast at the Astros swearing that they have never rolled a ball in the rough during a weekend golf outing. No response. The fact is that pro golfers have more pre shot information than a baseball player could dream about. Imagine a ball player being told where a ball was going to be hit before the pitch was thrown. Again, it boils down to execution, not pre shot/pitch knowledge. The sign stealing debacle was probably not anything the players dreamed up. More than likely an analytics geek trying to impress management.
  11. I "honestly" believe that this is much ado about nothing. Execution is the key to winning and most times brain clutter and distractions are not good in the heat of battle. Listening for banging on trash cans and thinking you know the sign but not being absolutely sure probably did as much harm as good. Its definitely an embarrassment but probably had no impact on wins and losses.
  12. I was hoping this would be about Buxton and Sano. Lewis should be in the best shape of his life the young puppy that he is.
  13. 2017 Home 48 - 33- Road 53 -28 2018 Home 46 - 35 Road 57 - 24 Above are home and road splits for the Astros in 2017 and 2018. Notice anything unusual? They must have had 2 trash cans for the away games. Also, 2017 record was identical to Twins 2019 record. Twins set MLB home run record in 2019. Just an observation.
  14. So let me get this straight as to how this sign stealing is supposed to have worked. The pitcher stares into the catcher as the catcher flashes the signs and the batter anxiously awaits the signal from the banging trash can which can't bang until the camera picks up the sign and gets it to the trash can banger while the batter, instead of simply concentrating on hitting and winning the game tries to pick up the trash can signal above the din of the crowd and the pitcher may already be into his wind up or even have delivered the pitch depending in the pitcher and whether or not he is pitching from a full windup and the pitch it self may be poorly executed or in an unexpected location or so perfectly executed that it is still very difficult to hit or is hit well but right at a defender. Sounds fool proof to me. Amazing that any Astros player ever made an out. They should still be playing in game one in the first inning. MLB is meeting at this moment to implement the slaughter rule. Sounds fool proof to me. By the way, ever tried wine made out of sour grapes? (The run on sentence was intentional; anything to do with runs)
  15. It will speed it up. slow it down, and maybe make it more interesting or maybe not.
  16. I don't think it will make a bit of difference in the speed of the game because that is not what is slowing the game down. I think a manager should be able to use his/(maybe her sooner than you think) bull pen any way they deem necessary. If they want to waste a pitcher on one batter so be it. Meanwhile, commercial breaks, time between pitches, high pitch counts, and fewer balls put in play for outs are what slows the game down. Oh and the ridiculous challenges and reviews. If an umpire's call is not obviously wrong almost immediately upon looking at the replay, it should stand. Simple as that.
  17. First the "cheating" What gets me is that there is no sport in which the teams don't try to figure out what the other team is doing ahead of time. Its perfectly fine for NFL teams to have tablets all over the sidelines and coaches in press boxes with binoculars and speakers in the QB's helmet. Its fine for a runner at second base to signal to the batter if they "steal" a sign but don;t use cameras and trash cans. On top of that the batter still has to hit the pitch and the stolen sign may actually be wrong which would be worse than not knowing the sign. Future of MLB. I think the media is as much to blame with the demise of the game as anything. A TV game used to be a big deal. Now every game is on TV and TV dictates schedules. World Series and playoff games in prime time end at midnight or later. The game itself can be very boring with constant 3-2 counts, pitchers acting as if their very existence depends upon the next pitch and then a 2 strike foul ball. The announcers ruin the games with their constant blathering about who knows what and many obviously believe that they are the true attractions, not the game. Actkally attending a game can be an expensive nightmare. The possible contraction of the minor leagues speaks for itself and is probably directly tied to the exorbitant contracts of the chosen few. All for now.
  18. Position players report 1 week from today. I hope they beat the U of MN Gophers on the 21st. Glad the off season lineup bantering is almost over. $10mil here, $10mil there, pretty soon you are talking about real money.
  19. So now, over a pittance in today's market, Berrios's motivation will be simply to enhance his own personal worth to another team instead of helping the Twins try to win another Central title. Mixed emotions is never a good thing. $375K is expense money. Twins, please revisit this and pay your All Star even if it was as a replacement.
  20. And during the off season the Twins can form a choir and travel the country singing songs beginning with "Pure as the wind driven Snow". Sorry Ewen but you are assuming an awful lot about all the other players on all the other rosters including the Twins. By the way, have you ever improved your lie in the rough?
  21. Let he who has never improved his lie in the rough during the weekend Nassau with his golfing buddies cast the first player off the Twins' roster. I cannot believe the holier than thou comments. Just let the Twins' roster go through the process all teams go through year after year. What if Donaldson pulls a pec on his first swing thinking the pitch was going to be a fastball when it was a change up?
  22. All I know is that the Twins rode their pre All Star record to the Central title last year. While Sano was recovering from a wound from being knocked off of a stairway during a celebration, guess who was the regular third baseman. For those who can't believe that a MLB team could possibly try to steal signs in a covert manner, I direct you to a recent interview by an ex player who said. it has always been common and many teams had all kinds of schemes including one he played on managed by a now hall of fame manager. No different than the (wind) fans that were turned on during Twins' turns at the plate in the Metro Dome. Oh, that never happened.
  23. As Bill S. said, "Much ado about nothing". Play ball. Save the tweets for the Cardinals, Orioles and Blue Jays.
