  1. Guess what. Only time will resolve this entire discussion. We can assume that Buxton will be back in the Twins lineup pretty soon. I hope before the Cleveland series so he can get a couple of games under his belt. After he comes back its pretty simple. How will he perform and for how long before its back to the IL. Best answers are: Great and a long time. Maybe well into the 2020 season? If the answers are Average and back on the IL in September, Buxton cannot be the Twins solution for center field.
  2. Indians won't go away so Twins needed all 3 of these games. Now on to Detroit while Indians play Tampa so maybe pick up a game or 2. Maybe a 5 game lead when the run of games against Red Sox, Nationals and 6 against those Indians begins.
  3. I hate to say it but there is possibly more truth to this than you intended. Snake bit, injury prone, maybe even a little fragile for his speed and body make up. Again, he is still young. Getting older won't help. Hopefully he will get over this latest episode and learn to play within himself. Problem is, his best asset is speed.
  4. "Yankee Stadium is an absolute joke......" It is ironic that the "house that Ruth built" would be designed to make home runs cheap. No question that Twins' strategy against Giolito last night was to "swing hard in case you hit it". Luckily the strategy worked twice; enough with Pineda on the hill plus 4 goose eggs by the bp. Rosario's insurance single was classic Rosario and clearly just laid the bat on the ball with his patented base hit swing.
  5. All very interesting for pure discussion but how about whose hot and whose not as the criterion? I think that who performs and who doesn't in those 12 games against Red Sox, Nationals and Indians should have a huge impact on who plays in the playoffs assuming, knock on wood, that they are in the DS. Anyone who tanks in those games or gives an indication that they are not ready for prime time should be on probation. That includes the defensive side in key positions. Putting the best defense possible on the field against Astros and Yankees is paramount.
  6. Can't do any worse (well technically they could) than they did against Giolito on the 21st so maybe a lineup change or maybe he won't be as sharp or maybe the Twins learned something. In any case, losing 3 of the past 4 against White Sox is no good so just see it and hit it. If Twins can manage to win the next two series they will be in great shape going into those key games from Sep 3-15. Then its all White Sox, Royals and Tigers to close out the (regular) season. Getting close. Go Twins!
  7. Thanks to the Texas sweep, Twins still are 7-3 over the last 10 while Indians are 4-6. Berrios had a totally different approach in his last start relying in breaking balls almost exclusively and the slam that knocked him out was a teed up softball. Yesterday's game was a classic case of why you actually play the games (imagine that). 7 runs on 5 hits and the big hits by Cron and Schoop; just the way you draw it up. Please win these next 2 series against White Sox and Tigers and then the season will be decided by the run of games between Sep 3 and Sep 15. It would be very nice to increase that 3.5 game lead prior to Sep 3.
  8. I would put tonight's game ion the must win category after losing the 'Sox series. Thanks to the Mets the Twins still have a 3.5 game lead and losing tonight would not be a disaster in the standings. Nevertheless, it is a game that a serious playoff contender should not lose, period.
  9. Totally different players and its so unfortunate that Kirby's career was cut short. If it wasn't for a guy named Koufax, Harmon would have probably had that one World Series championship on his resume as Kirby did. Harmon would not have done too well in center field I am afraid but managed to hold his own at 3rd and1b. Harmon was a pure power hitter and mastered the big fly. Kirby was simply an all round ball player with a dynamic personality that could carry a team. Harmon led more by pure example, was not flamboyant, but didn't need to be. You always knew he was there.
  10. At least the Twins improved in the RLISP category. No point in nit picking at this stage of the season. Just keep playing and see what happens. The Twins will finish where they are supposed to finish. I would like to see Marwin in the lineup more often. The time to keep everyone fresh is over. Play the best lineup every game. Say what you want but Twins played the best prior to Sano's return with Gonzales at third base. Jake got bad breaks in the first with routine grounders finding their way into the outfield and Schoop missing the bag. Wouldn't have made any difference but it did give Giolito early breathing room.
  11. The 9 September games, 6 against Cleveland and the 3 against the Nationals, will probably decide it. Twins must continue to win series against rest of Central schedule, starting with today against White Sox, and do no worse than 4-5 in those 9 Sep games. If they accomplish that the Central should be theirs. Barring more injuries and if Byron Buxton (productive version) returns, Twins can be competitive against other playoff teams but winning long series against Houston, Yankees, or (remote chance) Dodgers will be very difficult. BTW, those 9 Sep games will be effective playoff games. Cleveland speaks for itself and the Nats are in their own battle for a WC or even NL East. Step 1...beat Chicago today and pull for the Mets.
  12. RLISP story of game. Win the series and all is well. As far as Gibson goes, he takes the ball when its his turn, goes out and gives a predictable performance. 4 runs is not enough to win the great majority of games. No more complicated than that.
  13. As everyone's favorite announcer for the team the Twins are about to play used to say, "Don't stop now, boys.". Twins finish out the entire month against White Sox and Tigers while Indians have 3 at Mets next and also have Rays in addition to Royals and Tigers. No reason not to put some more space ahead of Cleveland before September, the most exciting regular season month for the Twins in a long time.
  14. No one should be a bit surprised about Buxton and his continued physical problems. Anyone who goes on the IL/DL with migraines and then stays on the IL/DL by fouling a ball off his foot during a rehab game has invented a whole new level for the term "injury prone". It is a shame but it will probably end his career since he is still very young and injuries don't lessen with age. Sano never has been other than an average defensive player so no surprise there. I do think Polanco needs a break. Don't the Twins have a number 1 draft pick for the entire draft who, I think, is a shortstop in their minor league system some place? Last time I checked (just now) Twins are still in first place. Just play the hand they have and go out and beat Texas again tonight. I think its fair to say that there won't be many 2-1 games. In today's game the opponent has to be out scored period. Twins don't miss Mauer at first base btw.
  15. Twins are in first place, I think. I had to double check because this thread sounds like the subject is a last place team. Upcoming schedule is Rangers, White Sox, Tigers White Sox, Tigers. No question, Twins must put some more space in front of Indians as they play Mets and Yankees. If they don't, the tone of this thread is justified.
  16. Twins are 15-14 post All Star. Indians, recent class of the Central have been on an inevitable roll Can't call it a collapse until Sep 30. As the famous historian said,"Its not over till its over". No question, if the Twins can't make up some lost ground against certain teams left on their schedule and hold their own against the other teams it would be fair to say that they over achieved early and made up for it later.
  17. Bosox win tonight, Twins back in first. Seems to be a lot of concern about playing the Yankees in the playoffs. Ever heard of the Houston Astros? Realistically can't expect Twins to beat either of those teams in a 5 or 7 game series. Not this year. Goal 1: Remains win the Central Backup: Home field wild card as of today v Oakland or Tampa Accomplish goal 1 or backup-then Twins are playing with house money as far as I am concerned. No matter who they would play in ALDS, just be lose and have fun. ALCS, be loser and funner. Main thing, don't take goal 1 or backup for granted. Closing the season out strong is more important than what they would do in the playoffs.
  18. A while ago I posted "Pencil in Aug. 12" . Well, its Aug. 12 and Twins are tied for first with Cleveland and either team is a leg up for the home wild card. Would anyone not have taken that back in March? No one is really happy, it seems, unless their team wins the World Series and the Twins are not going to win the World Series. So we should simply enjoy the next 44 games and see what happens. Having meaningful September baseball, to me, is what it is all about. Go Twins! With the remaining schedule they have, 25-19 over the next 44 is very doable. If Cleveland beats that more power to 'em. 6 more against Indians if my count is correct.
  19. A shame to score 7, 7, and 5 runs and lose all 3 games. The concern over the bull pen has now gone full circle as the bull pen has been rendered irrelevant until starters get their act (back) together. Hopefully Smeltzer can show that last start was not a fluke. Now need to win 2 of 3 or Twins will find themselves out of first place for the first time in 2019. Twins do have an easier schedule after the Indians as Cleveland plays Yankees, Mets and Red Sox next. Rest of August will be very interesting.
  20. Team offense was not the problem in the last 2 losses so I would go more by Polanco's attitude and physical shape than strictly numbers. He and Rosario both seemed to be a bit tired ( for lack of a better word) in the last 2 against the Braves. I hope they are all honest with Rocco so he can simply put the best team on the field that he can as the season winds down. Hardest thing to do in sports is close the deal. Twins have been in first place all year but all that counts is the next month and 3 weeks or so.
  21. Could be 6 games ahead, 2 games behind or somewhere in between by Sunday's end. This just might be a big series. Agree wholeheartedly about playing this series like it was a win or go home. Everyone has worried about the bull pen but Berrios and Perez totally dropped the ball and Baldelli seemed to throw in the towel yesterday. Gibson needs to "pitch" tonight. Good news, Sano really does seem to be coming around and the Twins need him to do just that.
  22. What happened to Eddie Rosario's offense? Looked helpless in the 7th inning ab today.
  23. I just signed up for Twins on MLB for rest of year. First game I watched was the blown save against the Marlins. Second game was last night which more than made up for it and Jim Kaat and Bert Blyleven were a huge part of that on top of the game itrself. 2 memorable quotes both by Kaat, I think; First was when Jake bounced a pitch behind Freddie Freeman. Kaat, " That is the way I always pitched Ted Williams". Second was when Brewer was talking about pitch sequencing as the modern way to confuse hitters. Kaat," We had sequencing, we just weren't smart enough to use those words. We just called it mxing 'em up" Thoroughly entertaining, can't wait for tonight.
  24. In spite of the disheartening game 3 loss to the Marlins, 5 of six ain't bad and now the huge 7 games against Braves and Indians to wrap up the 13 game run. Thank goodness Cron is back and better Buxton already be on the IL to allow time to figure out the lineups. Ditto Dyson for the bull pen. No way to explain his performance with Twins so far given his last 7 with the Giants with no runs allowed. Tough pitching match up tonight but somehow need 2 of 3 against Braves and at least a split with the Indians to not lose any ground. Indians just keep on winning so maybe they are due for a little tail spin. 4 of seven in these games would be great. 3 of 7 tolerable. Just get to the 12th with a 2 game lead. Then the schedule lightens up a bit with heavy dose of White Sox and Tigers.
  25. Game was lost in the top of the 9th, not the bottom. Cruz being forced at second on a clean hit by Kepler was a fluke and a half. Still the Twins only scored 4 runs and that is not enough to win most games. In addition to using Dyson at all and pulling Pineda, why was Polanco playing almost next to Sano at 3rd on one of the hits that Dyson gave up that could have been a double play? Reminds me of when Gardenhire said he was looking at his lineup card when the 3rd baseman was way out of position. I don't care what the analytics said, Polanco was way out of position. Normal shortstop position = double play and game over. Shame to lose this one but, guess what? So did Cleveland. Cleveland lost their series, Twins won theirs and picked up a game.
