You would think he'd make less mistakes then. His qualifications to be a Manager at the major league level was that he played the game for 7 years and was a coach for 4 years. He never managed in the minors. According to that, there are hundreds of former players with the same qualifications. He inherited a team that set the HR record in his first season propelling them to a 101 win season. As some of you said, the manager isn't responsible for players performances so he shouldn't get credit for that season, yet he won MOY. Now when they lose games it isn't his fault because he isn't responsible for players performances, yet he is the one who makes the lineup, who pulls a pitcher, who decides who to pinch hit for and when, who uses whichever reliever and when. He's had 4+ years of learning on-the-job and we have the same mistakes being made and some of those being made even more than before. Quite honestly he's never "looked the part" as far as I'm concerned. All he did was get lucky in 2019 to be in the right place at the right time. 2020 was shortened the covid season so I'm not giving him credit for that division win. 2021 was a 5th place finish and 2022 was 3rd place. hardly worthy accomplishments. And we all know why they'll likely finish 1st in 2023, no competition in the division. So which season are you going to say he made a difference in since he started as Manager? ZERO!

I lost all respect for Rocco last year when he made the comment that he didn't know what to do when Correa and Buxton had their "scheduled" off days fall on the same day. My 10 year old grandson said, Can't he have one of them wait until tommorow? Ironically now the team is better when they both DON'T play.
-
This comment speaks volumes to Rocco's ability to manage games effectively. Over-use of your bench early will cost you games late. He does it all the time. As for Jax, he's been consistantly inconsistant often enough NOT to be relied upon in a high leverage late game situation. I believe Funderburk was available and probably would have been a better option based on how Jax has done this season. But as with most every decision made with this team, the veterans not matter how bad they are, get the opportunities over the kids.

I have been a constant critic of this FO, Manager and their philosophy. Even if you hand them the division crown for the next 3 or 4 years they'll have to prove they can compete in the playoffs or those division titles are pretty much meaningless. As many have said before, in any other division they'd probably not make the playoffs. I will give accolades to their hitting prospects they have brought in. Pitching prospects I'm still waiting. The biggest improvement I see that they could make is to stop signing veterans that do not help the team. Gallo has to be the worst addition they have ever done. Correa is 2nd on the list. Buxton extension 3rd. Another article shows how the Twins were willing to bank on Julien, thus trading Arraez. The same could be said for Lewis, He should have been the go to guy at SS instead of giving mega millions to Correa, at least until Lee is ready to take over. Correa's contract was too much for too long with 2 young studs that can play SS in the not so distant future. When given the chance these young guys are performing. Quit giving their at bats away to veterans who can't or don't do the job.

It's Time to Move Carlos Correa Down in the Lineup
rv78 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Letting Wallner and Julien hit against lefties goes against everything Rocco uses his spreadsheet for. He believes that the best matchup is opposites sides of the plate verses the pitcher even if it means benching your best players. Dream on, it'll never happen with Rocco setting lineups unless he is forced into it by injuries or using his bench too early and/or too often.- 22 replies

It's Time to Move Carlos Correa Down in the Lineup
rv78 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Said it before and I'll say it again.... Over-rated and over-paid. I laugh at those who think he's so devoted to the Twins. He left for bigger money hoping to cash in to 2 other clubs, both of them wised up to his shortcomings before he came back to the Twins on a lesser offer. If it is pressure from the contract then he only has himself to blame. If it is due to injury then the FO is to blame..... again 2 other clubs were smart enough to see health problems. 5 more years of him is gonna bite, especially when it's time to start extending contracts to the good young players that are carrying this team.- 22 replies

Where is the upside to claiming any of the 3 outfielders mentioned? Renfro is a copycat to what the Twins have already, a power guy that strikes out too much, He's hitting .237 and has an OBP of .300. Grichuk is actually worse than Gallo and Bader is no better than Taylor. I'm not impressed with any of them and fail to see why any of these guys are worth spending additional payroll on. As for the pitchers, Moore might be worthy of taking a flyer on him. His last 2 seasons he's been decent. I do not see a Reynaldo Rodriguez listed on the Angels roster. If you mean Reynaldo Lopez, I'd probably stay away from him as his career stats suggest he could be another Jorge Lopez since he really only had 1 good season in his entire career, 2022. I'd prefer NOT to go down that road again. I'm guessing, the Twins FO will stand pat with what they have and at this point I'm ok with that as well. I'd rather see them add to the team by subtraction, meaning getting rid of the crap players they have that are making this team worse than it could be, not better.

Projecting the Twins’ Playoff Rotation

This pretty much sums it up for me. When we look back at Buxton's career we'll say virtually the same thing. We had him for 14 seasons and got 4 seasons of part-time play from him that were good. Sorry but that hurts in more ways than one.

How Did the Buxton Process Go So Horribly Wrong?
rv78 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Unfortunately #1) He has shown us, he can have trouble making it through 30 games much less 162. I wouldn't bank on that happening. Unfortunately #2) The FO did bank on him. -
This FO has made many mistakes. Last years trade deadline acquisitions were mistakes. Failing to bring in bullpen help during the off-season was another mistake. Signing Gallo to the tune of $11M was an epic mistake. I hesitate but will say it, signing Correa and extending Buxton were 2 more mistakes. Giving Rocco an extension, big mistake. We are faced with a team that strikes out at epic proportions due to their philosophy of swing hard, pull the ball, and the K's won't hurt you. The rotation is suppose to be the strength of the team but has become hit and miss at best with all 5 guys imploding with too much frequency to be taken seriously. Now Rocco is back to his 5 innings and your done to try to protect them which will only compound the bullpen problems even more. If you can stand to watch them, they are about as exciting as watching paint dry.

How Did the Buxton Process Go So Horribly Wrong?
rv78 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The only take I see on this, is that Buxton wasn't healthy before the season started, hasn't been healthy after the season started, and isn't healthy now. He has contributed very little this year and the team would possibly be better had a different DH been used instead of him. The FO made the mistake of trying to play him any where or any how they could dream up. His last 2 injuries before this season even started were NOT from playing CF. If you're going to protect him he should NOT be in the lineup, period. When a guy bats, eventually he has to RUN the bases. If he can't run in the field he has no business running the bases. A FO that has common sense would know that. I think they have very little. He should have taken the whole year off or at least the first half and gotten healed up completely instead of the half-clocked approach they took with him. A healthy Buxton playing in CF would definitely help the team. Unfortunately we have seldom seen it and may never will again. -
Playing Gallo ANYWHERE, ANYTIME is a mistake. You have to be completely blind if you think he is the favorable matchup you need. Hey, I'm willing to go strikeout for him and I'll do it for a lot less than $11M. Worst signing ever and biggest waste of money ever.

It is stupidity at it's finest. Only a Rocco can make a move that brings in a hitter worse than the one already in place just because he bats from the other side of the plate. Maybe someday his spreadsheet will tell him which player strikes out almost everytime regardless of which side of the plate he stands on. Oh I'm sure it already does, he just chooses to ignore that part.

It's Time to Stop Messing Around in the Bullpen
rv78 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article. Just another mistake being made by this FO and their Manager. Not using your best players is a common one they seem to embrace. The only thing I see is that they probably figure it won't matter this year since they have no competition within the division. Or they see a guy like Pagan last year, that everyone was calling for a dismissal in any way shape or form is now one of their better options, so they will do the same this year with others. It is their way. It really shouldn't be a surprise anymore.- 25 replies

Is he really that valuable? I agree his $1.8M salary is not a problem but if his OPS against left-handers is only .670 wouldn't using a better bat against them..... be "better"? Rocco's insistance to not use his best players all of the time or as much as possible is the only reason why he gets used as much as he does. It isn't because he is the best option. Is he a good base runner? Yes, should Rocco use him as a late game base stealer? Yes. Or a late game defensive replacement? Yes. But putting him in the starting lineup over the regulars who are suppose to be better is a mistake. Hopefully with Lewis back it will mean less Castro. I think it is tale-telling how you describe Castro as the Band-Aid to Rocco's moves, Band-Aids are used to heal boo-boos or another way to look at it...... he is the fix for Rocco's mistakes.

One move the Twins should (but won't) make in the Offseason
rv78 replied to Cap'n Piranha's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
So you are suggesting that the $15M couldn't be spent better elsewhere? Right now I would gladly take Farmer over Buck, who by the way has only 3 less hits in 75 less plate appearances than Buck. For what it's worth, I would add Mahle and Paddack to the worthless catagory that this FO wasted money on. Farmer not so much as he is providing value and is only a 1 year committment. Buxton is a broken record and even trying to keep him healthy by giving him the least demanding position on the team, DH, can't accomplish that. If you think the money that is wasted by this FO isn't crippling then you must be happy with a team that can only be competitive in the weakest division in baseball. That can barely stay above .500. Maybe if they spent their money more wisely they could actually play with the big boys. -
One move the Twins should (but won't) make in the Offseason
rv78 replied to Cap'n Piranha's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Some day, some year. those that dream will realize Buxton is a bust. Championship teams are not built around part-time players and that is only the fault of the current FO. Then over spending on Correa and Gallo was another mistake. Gallo will be a short lived nightmare. Correa will be much more detrimental due to the length of his contract. Keep in mind who is leading this team's lineup. It is not the veterans that this FO has signed but the young players brought up from the minors. I'll give kudos to the FO for the likes of Lewis, Julien, Wallner, Miranda(last year), and the other prospects coming or contributing already. It is not time to spend foolishly on 1 player even if it is an Ohtani. The time is here now to start investing in the young talent that is already here and also plan to spend enough to keep those prospects not too far away. -
Hindsight is easy. Reason #1, last years acquisitions blew up in their faces. No way they are going to make those mistakes again at the deadline. #2, I also suspect the FO figured since it doesn't have much for competition within the division, holding pat with what they have and riding it out will probably suffice. And like everyone says the playoffs can be a crap shoot. Reason #3 for not doing anything at the deadline is their problem lies mostly within the offense and the veterans of Correa, Buxton, Gallo, and Kepler are the main culprits. They aren't easy problems to move on from and more likely impossible. Can't envision any other team wanting to take any of those 4 guys the way they are playing, especially a team looking to rebuild. Their best bet was to double down on those 4 guys and hope they get hot the last 2 months of the season. If they do, and probably even if they don't, they'll make the playoffs in the weakest division in baseball and end up looking like they did the right thing.

Week in Review: Sticking to the Script
rv78 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The more things change the more they stay the same. This team is so inconsistant that regardless of who is in the lineup or on the mound you have no idea what you're going to get. Get swept by KC to lose 5 in a row, then beat up on the Cards and DBacks, then lose 3 of 4 to Detroit then take 2 of 3 from Philly. On again off again. Yeah, the next 5 are against the easy Tigers and Pirates and they will probably lose 4 of 5. It's a good thing for the FO, Rocco and the coaches that they'll be able to back their way into the playoffs since they have no competition in their division. That alone will probably save their jobs for another season and we'll get to live with this crap in 2024 again.- 36 replies

Austin Martin Could Be the September Spark the Twins Need
rv78 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The fact that Castro gets put in the leadoff spot or is being used like a regular player when he should be strictly a bench player only proves one point. Rocco isn't qualified for his job. As for Martin, his path to a big league club would come faster if he was traded. The Twins are enamored with the HR ball and he doesn't fit their scheme. At the same time, if the younger set of players that the Twins have, Lewis, Lee, Julien, Miranda, Kirilloff, Larnach, Wallner, Jeffers, Gordon, Celestino all start playing up to their potential there just won't be enough at bats available for everyone, especially considering guys like Correa and Buxton aren't going anywhere either.
