  1. Good article, especially noting the "unfairness" of some of the stats and results that Kepler has this season. I'm basing my opinion on only a handful of clips of Kepler I've seen in the past month, but his approach at the plate looks better/smoother (more fluid?), and that all-important self-confidence seems to be kicking in as well. Hope he continues to make progress. We need him in that outfield.
  2. I agree. I think he's earned a September callup if nothing else.
  3. I'd rather see the team hang on to Odorizzi. I think we'll need another dependable arm in the starting rotation next year, and overall he's been fairly good this year. As far as Rodney, I'm happy to see him go, "veteran presence" or not. Sure, he's a fun player to have around, one of the few that still seems to have a zest for the game, and at his advanced age he's still a relatively effective reliever. But as others have stated, he's not going to be part of the team's future, or even of much need next year, so might as well get something for 7 weeks of his services. Good move.
  4. Back to the subject of clearing waivers, I'm still hoping we can unload Rodney on some other team.
  5. Well, the impressive early returns on those players aside, I think the issue of the way the Twins "develop" players certainly is something that could be questioned. Just over the past decade or so, think about all the other players traded away or released who have thrived or played better after they left the Twins organization; everyone from Carlos Gomez, Danny Valencia, and Aaron Hicks to pitchers like Brian Duensing, Liam Hendriks, and Anthony Swarzak. And then, um, there was David Ortiz. Maybe I'm just imagining it, but it seems like those are just a few of many players who stock has risen after they've left the Twins organization.
  6. As others have stated, players progress and develop differently. It would be foolish to expect every player to have the same trajectory. And in the case of a special talent like Lewis, it would be counterproductive to hesitate to promote him because of his age or relative lack of inexperience. Some players just have the extra special something. And if that's the case, I hope the Twins are unusually aggressive and promote players like Lewis and Kiriloff faster than usual. No, I don't want them to be taking a lot of unnecessary risks, but I think it's time that they DO take a few chances with this impressive talent we have and see how they perform at higher levels. .
  7. Great game by Mejia. He could make a believer out of me yet. And Garver also continues to impress with the bat. As good as he's been lately I find it hard to believe that he only has hit 6 homers all year.
  8. If Forsythe is now healthy I'm all for it. Other 2B options for next year (i.e. the struggles of Gordon in AAA) aren't that tempting, so he could be a good, solid place holder for a year at least.
  9. Obviously all three players exceeded expectations and became valuable members of the team. I think one big key was that the team was patient with each of them and gave them enough opportunities to stick on the big league team, without subjecting them to the yo-yo-ing ride to AAA and back again the whole time.
  10. Another great and informative roundup. Many thanks for keeping us in the loop. I have to admit that Williams had not been on my radar at all thus far this season, but you can't ignore the impressive HR numbers. Hope he can keep it up at the next level.
  11. Good article. One paragraph jumped out at me: Another key piece for the future, Adalberto Mejia, asserted that he belongs in the big-league rotation on Wednesday by holding Cleveland scoreless on one hit over five innings. Is Mejia really considered that much of a key piece? He's show flashes of quality the past two years, but I'm still not sold on him being a core piece of the rotation going forward. Maybe a somewhat reliable 4th or 5th starter, but anything more than that ... I dunno What do others think? Could he really be a good foundation piece in the rotation next year?
  12. Good article! I'd agree that the foundation of the rebuild, or the young core we have, hasn't changed all that much. But it's been such a frustrating and disappointing season in so many ways. Free agent signings that were a definite mixed bag, and lack of production with some of our "stars. It feels like we've taken a step back when we should have taken a step forwards. The struggles of guys like Kepler and especially Sano and Buxton (yeah, all those nagging injuries, but still), plus the lack of progress with Nick Gordon, have really hurt us. At least we've seen good things from Berrios and Rosario, and even Garver is looking better lately. Of course the real excitement is still down in the lower minor league system (and a few other interesting players in AA and AAA), so I remain optimistic about the team's long-term future. I only wonder if we should just play the kids next year, or try and add a few more "key" free agents?
  13. I realize he's not a prospect, but I'd love to see Willians Astudillo called back up to the major league club again. Seems like all he does is get hits.
  14. Good question about the possiblity of Thorpe starting to get tired as the long season --- well, long for him due to his long period of inactivity --- nears an end. Might it be time for the team to shut him down, or does it really matter?
  15. Over on the south side of Chicago, Palka struck a pinch hit homer for the Chisox yesterday, his 16th of the year. to go with 42 RBI/ But ... he's batting a meager .242 with a .288 OBP. Nice to see him show some power, but I don't really regret the Twins losing him. Then again, he's certainly outperformed Morrison this year.
  16. Yeah, I noticed that Duensing got hammered again in yesterday's game, seeing his ERA rise even higher. Hmm.... might we interest the Cubs in Fernando Rodney at this point?
  17. Man, that's just insane. Didn't think I'd see Milone's name in a box score again!
  18. Before too much longer the big chatter will be about potential free agent signings. Yeah, plenty of money to spend, but no sense in throwing away big dollars and getting meager results again. Sure, I'm all for taking chances, but I'd rather let the young prospects develop at this point. And one word of caution about trades and free agent gambles: Delmon Young. I still have nightmares.
  19. From what I read today, that's what the Brewers are planning to do. Too bad. I had thought Milwaukee was the most likely landing place for Dozier. Now, I'm wondering if we'll end up having to unload him on a waiver deal next month, if at all.
  20. Akil Baddoo led the offense. He went 3-for-3 with two walks and stole his 20th base. Stolen bases! What a wacky concept! Personally, I find it refreshing, not to mention exciting, that minor league players like Baddoo are still allowed to steal bases during these strangely changing baseball times. Good for him.
  21. Normally, I don't pay much attention to --- or at least give much importance to it --- a pitcher's won-loss record, but I was shocked to notice that this was only win number 5 for Kyle Gibson this year. As good as he's pitched, that's pretty darn surprising.
  22. I'm having more fun following the Twins' minor league players than the ones on the big league club this summer. It's gonna be sad when their respective seasons end in the coming weeks.
  23. I understand the temptation to sell when a player like Gibson is pitching well and still has that extra year of team control. But as others have pointed out, quality starting pitchers are not so easy to find, and Gibson seems to have turned into that rare beast int past year. I say: keep him!
  24. This one took me by surprise. But from what I've been reading, we got two good prospects in the deal, so I'm content. And as much as I like Esccobar, the fact that we were able to get three prospects for his last two months is beyond acceptable. Still hoping we can unload Dozier and Rodney, with maybe Lynn packing his bags too, but this is a start. That said, Pressly was a player I would have preferred to have kept. And hey, maybe we can still go out and grab Escobar again next year.
