  1. Hmm ... I have mixed feelings about this idea. I'm not totally against the idea of expansion and adding two teams. But I hate the thought of not having separate leagues, the traditional AL and NL, and personally, I'd prefer to do away with inter-league play too. Not a fan of that. I also wouldn't want the other leagues --or divisions of whatever they are going to call the new alignment --- to have to adopt the DH either. Call me a traditionalist, but I still like the "old" idea of having the pitcher having to hit ... at least in one league. But a new Southern team like Memphis or Nashville would be pretty cool.
  2. Hard to think that we're seriously talking about a Dozier extension, only a year after it seemed like the majority wanted to ship him elsewhere, and yet it DOES make a certain amount of sense. A fan favorite, a consistent player, someone who seems to rise to the challenges given him. Hmm ... I wouldn't say no.
  3. Hard to argue with this verdict. Buxton showed considerable improvement this year, much to the relief of us all! But others aren't far off the mark in picking Rosario or Berrios as Most Improved too. Rosario perhaps showed the most surprising surge, whereas most believed Berrios would be much better. Both Mauer and Gibson had impressive second half performances, but I think they would rate more as "Comeback Players" rather than "Most Improved" due to their years of experience. The maturation and improvements that the top trio of youngsters demonstrated was very encouraging. I only hope there is no regression from this bunch next year.
  4. Can't cast a vote because I don't have a Twitter account. Boo!!!
  5. Excellent overview and analysis, Tom. I appreciate being able to read this stuff. All I can off for this game is a tired cliche: think outside the box. With our horrible track record against the Yankees it just seems like we need to try something, anything unexpected. Whether that strategy is based on pitching or the lineup construction, I can't even make a suggestion. Let's just hope for the best!
  6. I'm on the fence about starting Sano in the wildcard game. Obviously, as Tom said, he certainly IS the most dangerous hitter in the lineup ... BUT that's when he's healthy. And right now, are we certain that he's really recovered from his injury and in game shape? Yeah, one mighty swing ---- echoes of Kirk Gibson --- could be the turning point in the game, but as as a few others have said, Sano didn't look entirely comfortable at the plate these past two games. I'd keep him on ice as a pinch hitter for this one game.
  7. I think Broker put it well; the Twins ARE fun to watch again. Plenty of power, some speed on the bases, a trio of great athletes in the outfield. Sure, the pitching still needs some tweaking, but there are some very exciting ingredients at play. All in all, what we have on the field is making the games much more interesting. And of course having Big Sexy on the staff make things more entertaining too.
  8. Have Gimenez ready in the bullpen!
  9. Great writeup, Seth! I love reading about players like Garcia, the ones who make an extra effort to give back to the community and interact with the fans. That "live" personal touch, I think, is much more meaningful than all these guys who are tweeting and making inane Facebook posts. I agree with what Jimbo said, Garcia seems like the sort of guy who is a eader, possibly a coach or manager in the future.
  10. Thanks for that comment. That's reassuring. Reading those Verducci articles the past few years had made me much more aware of the potential damage that a sharp increase in workload can have on a young pitcher. Seemed like a sound analysis at the time. Hopefully, as you noted, Berrrios and his workhorse ethic will prevail!
  11. Rodriguez said: "Growing up .... I was a Braves fan .... Always wondered why Leo Mazzone, their pitching coach was always rocking during the game." I always wondered about that too!
  12. Thanks for these player profiles, Seth. I really enjoy reading more about these minor league players, especially the ones that might not rank among the top prospect. Even veteran grinders like Rodriguez can surprise you if given the chance.
  13. I'm getting a little nervous seeing the season pitch count total of Berrios (as noted by the article, he's already exceeded his previous career high) climbing higher as the season winds down. I'm in the camp that says you gotta treat these young pitchers cautiously. If he exceeds his previous total by TOO much, that could be risky for next year. With the Twins looking like a lock for the wild card game, I'd even consider pushing Berrios back in the rotation this coming week. Let Colon, or even Gee, takes his lumps again!
  14. I live in Southeast Asia and don't get to see many (any!) games on TV (Internet highlights and box scores are mainly my diet) but the more I read about Escobar the more impressed I am, both with his versatility and his all-around play. Seems like a solid, dependable, likeable player, the kind a team needs to have (on the field and in the clubhouse). And he's hit for more power than expected too. Who would have thought he would turn out to be so valuable an addition when he got him in that Liriano trade with the White Sox. But who was the other player we got in that trade from the Chisox? My memory fails me.
  15. Bullpens can be such unpredictable creations. The Twins got snake-bit this year with the rash of injuries to the young arms/prospects, plus the long-shot notion that Perkins and Hughes could return with effectiveness. I know most people don't want to hear the mantra "be patient" but I think we have to be in this case. I like what we have waiting in the wings.
  16. Yeah, the bullpen mix for next year should be VERY interesting and very competitive. As you noted. even less-heralded guys like Belisle and Gee have played useful roles this year. Do we keep Duffey and hope he bounces back? Is there a role for Phil Hughes? And will Chargois and Burdi bounce back from injuries and contribute? The bullpen could actually be a strength in 2018.
  17. Molitor was quoted in a post-game interview, talking about Gibson's rough first innnng: "Of all the things he's done, this one's, in some ways, is maybe a little more impressive to give us six innings after that start." And I have to agree with that. Hanging in there, settling down, and giving the Twins six innings was huge. If Molitor had been forced to go to the bullpen in the second inning, well, the outcome of this game may have been very different. In any case, Gibson held it together when we needed it.
  18. Just for the name alone, Akil Baddoo, this kid rates highly. But the bonus is that he seems to have all the right tools to reach the majors. Hope the climb continues.
  19. Very fun to see back-to-back walkoff homers this week. Both Rosario and Buxton seem to be playing with a lot of confidence down the stretch. Let's hope it continues!
