BREAKING: Twins to Hire Derek Shelton as Manager for 2026

BREAKING: Twins to Hire Derek Shelton as Manager for 2026
Doctor Wu replied to knothole61's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I agree with that take. Managers CAN make a difference, certainly, but you need quality players to work with. I don't hate the idea of Shelton as manager, but I was really hoping for a new face with new ideas. That said, it's the mix of players on the roster that will be the TRUE determination of whether we can win more games next season or not. I'm still holding out hope that can happen.- 250 replies

I keep hearing about the Twins "team culture" and I have no idea what that is supposed to mean.- 250 replies

That would be a huge thing!

Boadas missed a large portion of the 2024 season and all of 2025 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, so his work in the AFL so far should be pretty eye opening as it is the first time back on the mound for him since then. Well, those stats sure opened my eyes! Only 10 innings pitched so far, but that is certainly very encouraging for a guy coming back from TJ surgery. He was with Cedar Rapids in 2024, so I assume he will be back there to start next season?

Former Twins. Where are They Now? 2025 Edition

And I think I had baseball cards for at least three of those pitchers! Great research to find that four of those guys are still alive.- 339 replies

The Twins and the Illusion of Hope in a Rebuild
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good and accurate take on the current situation. I don't see this as a rebuild at all at this point. Of course, who knows what the front office will do between now and April. But I still feel that we have the foundation of a competitive team next season. Perhaps trading a guy like Ryan and getting back an impact bat in return will make a difference. If guys like Lewis, Lee, and Wallner product like we hope they can, that's another plus. But, oh yeah, there's the matter of that depleted bullpen. Sure, that's an issue, but I think that problem will be easier to patch up as opposed to trying to find four capable starting pitchers. We have enough arms for the rotation, even without Ryan, and I think maybe one or two of those guys could go the Duran/Varland route and turn into good relief pitchers. Plus, as you noted, we have some darned good talent in the minors, waiting to make an impact. Not a rebuild at all.- 61 replies

I read that he feels healthy now and wants to either coach or manage again. Despite his age, he has such a good track record, and is so well respected, that I would think that some team will at least offer him a coaching job.

Great roundup, Seth, It's very encouraging that we finally have some potentially useful pitchers in the organization. Hopefully, most of them can progress and end up being helpful pitchers for the Twins.- 12 replies

Great take on that idea. Now, let's go and find us a guy that really has the desire and the talent to get this team playing up to its potential.

Road to a Rebound: Royce Lewis
Doctor Wu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pull power will always be Lewis' specialization when at his best, but he needs to recapture his ability to handle heaters and drive certain pitches the other way. It's a fairly straightforward mandate but undoubtedly a much more challenging and complex matter to execute. I have no idea what it will take for Lewis to rediscover his mojo, but your analysis seems to be a pretty accurate one. I still think he CAN be a major contributor, if not an all-star. He certainly has the ability, and I think he still has the desire to make it happen. -
Well, that does make sense on one level, but still ... it's a bit of an insult, or lack of confidence, to sign your new manager to only a 1-year deal. Sure, this will be Suzuki's first manager job, but yikes, one year with a team like the Angels isn't much of a trial. I can't think of any other team giving their new manager such a short contract in recent memory.

What Will Minnesota Twins Do with Matt Wallner?
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sure, Wallner deserves another shot next season. I don't see any real benefit in trying to trade him after his disappointing 2025 season. And I don't think Larnach has much trade value either. Certainly not for any players that will help the Twins this coming season.- 101 replies

His versatility and familiarity with the roster are undeniable positives, yet financial constraints and positional redundancy could steer Minnesota in another direction. That pretty much says it. Willi was a fun and useful, and inexpensive, player for the Twins for a few years, but I don't see a fit for next season. Gotta find more arms for the bullpen first.
-
Jhonny Pereda probably not a big-league player, and unlikely to stick around. Did hit a little bit in 30 at-bats though. Sure, his time up with the Twins was brief, and he's already 29, but I think he showed enough that he COULD be the backup catcher we need for next season. And he already DID have some MLB experience before the Twins picked him up, so I wouldn't write him off just yet.
-
Most veteran ex-managers such as Maddon and Bochy will have zero interest in the Twins job. Most likely we will be getting a rookie manager of some sort. But let's hope it's a guy with imagination and patience.
-
I don't think that whole "Bomba Squad" thing a few years back was any sort of team/front office philosophy or a grand scheme of some kind. It just happened, and that was cool, but I don't think that makes it any sort of blueprint to follow. We've been drafting some interesting players (both pitchers and position players) in the past couple of years. If we are patient, some of these guys might turn into real difference makers.
