  1. To my untrained eye, Twins are sticking with the BPA (as their scouts see it) in this draft. To me, the organizational gaps seem to be pitching (near major-league ready...not so much the low minors)...and hit-first corner types. That's why I thought a college arm...someone with a chance to show in the next two years...would be in order with the first round pick. So be it...I'll be a Keoni Cavaco fan going forward. At least until the Twins trade him at the 2020 trade deadline for a pitcher.
  2. I think one of the greatest (and kind of unexpected, at least for me) aspects to 2019 is that we have this wonderful opportunity to be patient with Sano and Buxton. The team's immediate success is not as dependent upon either player...not nearly as dependent as any of us had a right to dream 6 months ago. We can leave Buxton at the bottom of the lineup as he gains confidence in the new him...we can take Sano and put him toward the bottom of the lineup as he tries to build consistency...we can give either days off against tough matchups or to keep them healthy as they try to refine their game, without agonizing over whether we have any chance at all without them in the lineup and performing. This is a good thing...regardless of the ultimate outcomes. When you have that kind of ceiling in a player, you'd love to be able to afford patience.
  3. If this is what Machado and Harper are going to be, their contracts weren't worth it. But track records suggest we are seeing performances so far that are closer to their floors than their ceilings. And both have many years of prime ahead of them. My opinion of the signings by SD/PHI hasn't changed in two months.
  4. Even for very high draft picks, there often (even usually) comes a time when you have to lower expectations...or lower your 'hopes'. Makes sense since pretty much all fans have at least a hope or dream of superstardom when their club gets a number 1/2, etc overall pick. So, that's what starts to happen with me when I see these results over an extended period. Even considering that is at least mildly disappointing, even without drawing definitive conclusions. Also, not buying the "he's injured" narrative. If he's injured and fighting through it...as a number 1 draft pick in the low minors at age 20...the entire minor league staff should be fired immediately.
  5. I get the upside. But he turned 18 yesterday. Given where the Twins are, it seems to me that the only way you can make a pick like this...is if you REALLY hated the college arms. Toolsy, might hit. Did we need another one of those?
  6. Well, Cavaco turned 18 yesterday, and Miranda is OPS'ing .627 as a 21 year-old in a league that Sano OPS'd 1.079 as a 20 year-old. I'll be pulling for Sano to hang at 3rd for a few more years yet.
  7. It's obvious they've literally told clubs to take 10 minutes between picks for the TV show. No trades to be made, etc....predictable start...just waiting for the TV scripts to play out. It's not working. Really horrible TV viewing. I'll be checking in on my phone from here on out .
  8. Division rivals picking up next: 2, 3, and 5. The other 364 days of the year I enjoy how bad the division is.
  9. Ugh. Bad memories. So bad, I had to go look. Know what's unbelievable? That McCarty appeared in 632 games. 632 games as a .676 OPS'ing first baseman (and horrific corner outfielder). That's what being drafted number 3 overall does for you. People will give you about 630 more changes than you deserve.
  10. If I can only have one, Smith. Now I have two lefties for leverage, one to use late, one to use whenever. Ideally, get Kimbrel now and Smith later when the price is (relatively) low. We're not in a hurry right now.
  11. I'm more interested in Keuchel. Just overall think another decent-to-solid lefty has more value for the staff over the course of the year. (Can't count on Mejia or Moya at this point...and they're Mejia and Moya.) Like the idea of Keuchel and/or Perez in the bullpen in the post-season. Scherzer is the high-reward type that could be a needle-mover in the post season. You'd get 2 1/2 years of a pitcher whose basically 35 years old now...and with a ton of innings in the rear-view mirror. My thought is that it might be the last 'sell-high' opportunity that the Nationals would have for him.
  12. Nice to see Kirilloff heating up and Rooker back (and of course Cruz). No hits for Rortvedt today..but threw out the only attempted steal, AND picked a runner off first. Lewis’s slow start has given way...to a truly horrible middle. Last 16 games: slashing .167/.203/.333 (.536). 2/25 BB/K (36% K rate)
  13. Win a game against a good team when things aren’t necessarily breaking your way. Nice. Good Jose showed up in the nick of time, and the offense scrapped and did just enough. Sano’s been robbed here before...he’ll have to figure out a way to get even.
  14. I remember Cody having Diaz ranked WAY higher than anyone else (including me) early last winter in the prospect ratings. Big tip of the hat. Twins need to push him now. Have to see this year what he can do at the AA level, I would think. Rortvedt threw out another base stealer last night as well. Now thrown out 14 of 24 on the year.
  15. This sets up a scenario where we HAVE to win the next three to appear viable for the free agents that will be signing next week. ANYTHING short of that has us on a path to over-reach with ill-advised deadline trades that are likely to KILL the franchise for the NEXT TEN YEARS. If Baldelli has ANY clue at all, he’ll have Berrios start AT LEAST two of the next three games.
  16. Time to get Astudillo in the game...No reason to not have all bench players in the game at this point.
  17. Weird lineup coming out of an off day. If it works, it’s great.
  18. I reject out of hand the author's narrative of... "Buxton was the guy who put in all the effort and had plenty of hurdles placed in his way. Sano was the talented slugger that looked to rely on that alone." So, Buxton is fit and fast, therefore he's a tireless worker who's faced a bunch of bad luck, he gets hurt because he's unlucky...Sano should be able to hit every pitch 800 feet, but he can't because he's overweight and doesn't work hard, he gets hurt because he's out of shape. It's a narrative that keeps popping up here from time-to-time. It's purely speculative, and as such, based on personal prejudices for/against the players. It's one of 1000 reasons/examples that demonstrate why I try to base conclusions based on the way the player plays the game...what I can see, not what I can't see or can't know.
  19. Paul Molitor in 1996. (Not that I didn’t love me some César Tovar.)
  20. Good game. Best to separate from the Brewers before the 8th inning. After that, they're going to have the advantage in most games and against almost all opponents.
  21. Very happy for Devin Smeltzer! It seems likely that the Pineda move was executed, in large part, to take advantage of the upcoming off days to push all starters back a day (not just Perez). It puts them in a position to go with 4 fresh starters for the next couple of weeks...and also gives Pineda time to work on whatever physical things he needs to. It's the type of move that can pay dividends down the line, and the type of decision made easier with the confidence of a 10-game lead heading into June.
  22. Yeah. I won’t bite, either. Essentially asking how we think this team will project through the playoffs. After one-third of the season, we don’t know.
