  1. I can see trading Castro but not the other two unless we would get a very good return. The problem with deadline deals is you take on prospects which, if not clearly ready for the majors, can be just fillers of minor league rosters. However, if the front office feels we are not going to be contenders for a couple of years, they will probably go forward with those type of deals. So, are we closer to being a contender or closer to sinking to the bottom of the division?
  2. Civale seems to have seen better days. Ober looked like he was favoring his shoulder on one dugout shot from yesterday's game. He certainly isn't right at this time and it may be more than just a pitching slump. I've never been high on Woods-Richardson but hopefully he can give us 3-4 fair starts going forward. Festa can be good and is moving in the right direction. The minor leaguers are slumping right now. But we give up on Alcala and take on Wentz? Doesn't make any sense to me. Then we sign a weak infielder? Huh? I gotta look at the lower teams to see who could be pried away and is signed for more than this year.
  3. You "may" be the biggest Twins fan in NC. I would give you a run for your money. I go back to the old Chuck Stobbs/Dick Hyde days of the old Senators who became the Twins. Ooops, I think I gave away my age. Anyway, no matter. If this kid turns out to be a major leaguer, so be it. As long as we don't trade him away before that.
  4. "Very real needs"? Where? I can see replacing those who are injured but I don't see this smaller market team doing much in terms of high upgrades at the deadline. I'd rather make a bigger splash in the off season where we might get a big star free agent for more than a stretch run. Bring up the best prospects now and let's see what they can do rather than trading them away for a rental. The only person I can see the Twins dealing right now is Vasquez who might bring back someone of good quality. Good defensive catchers are hard to find. Otherwise we will try to fill a hole here and there. What we have is decent though not of the highest quality but can win if properly managed and doesn't get continually hurt.
  5. Don't see where this helps. Twins now need a starter or two. Trading Alcala could be a mistake. We'll see.
  6. If the Twins have no desire to extend him beyond this season, then shop him now and see what is available. Maybe a team would be willing to trade a quality player in a sign and trade deal. It's somewhat doubtful but he is at his peak value right now. Too bad we can't get some runs for him but, when we finally do, he will probably give them back. Even if we get a valuable minor leaguer, it would be better than just losing him.
  7. It's a numbers game right now and Festa has the better numbers as far as team control. Both are no better than #3 or 4 starters. Things could change by the trade deadline and both could be here or gone. I am not giving up on Paddack just yet.
  8. It won't hurt to give him one more shot. It will be interesting to see if he can fully recover but his history is not good.
  9. I said earlier that I am convinced that he is not healthy enough to hit well. I also believe that we have all over-estimated this team. I also don't think that France, Julien, Lee or even Bader are really much better. All are .240 hitters with less solid contact.
  10. To be honest, regardless if Royce comes back by mid-May, I think we have all over-estimated this Twins team. When they get decent starting pitching, the relievers fail. When they hit, the starters fail and they don't hit very much. They are striking out at an alarming rate. I honestly felt that Rocco would be fired after the Braves fiasco series. If nothing else than to shake the team up. What is wrong with Jax? Is Correa really at full strength? Lots of issues with no real positives coming out just yet. It's still early but things do not look good. The nucleus seems to be there but......
  11. Can we all chip in to cover the 0.2 million Pohlad wants? Or can we convince him to go ahead and sell the team for the 1.5 mil? Winning games (and warmer weather and/or the Yankees) will put more fans in the stands. But maybe the fans are also concerned that new owners might try to move the team (to Nashville?). I think the Twins will do ok as far as attendance. I'm more concerned about their continued lack of offense, injuries to players like Lopez and Lewis and the possibility that maybe they just aren't as good as we think they are. But it's still very early and I remain optimistic.
  12. There can be 2 things said about today's managers. One is that they baby the pitchers too much by pulling them too early (although in this case it was understandable) and the other is they save their closer for the last inning when some games may be won or lost in the 7th or 8th inning. But the overall fact for the Twins right now is their lack of hitting- especially with men on base.
  13. To me this is just flipping one mediocre player for another. Bader was a hot commodity for the Yankees for the first month and a half after he got there. After that, he settled into an overall average ballplayer. To me, the average ballplayer hits .245 with 15-18 home runs over 400 plate appearances. That's what I would expect from Bader with maybe 15-18 stolen bases and very good fielding with a slightly above average arm. He won't hurt us since we'll probably drop someone of equal ability like Margot or ??? but money could be better spent somewhere else (IMHO). I don't see why we would spend money here if we need a starter or two. But I don't run the team. Larnach and Wallner are fine out there with Bux. And Martin should get better with experience though how much better remains to be seen.
  14. It's too bad the Twins ceiling couldn't be increased by even 10 mil. There are some good players who can be had for 4-6 mil each though they may not be at the top of the heap. I hate when a team signs a good arm for a few mil but we just sit there.
  15. While it's nice to see that we seem to have a number of good prospects for the future, I personally do not put much stock in performances at levels below AA because they are mainly playing against most players who will never make it. At the AA and especially the AAA level is where the true abilities come out. But baseball is a unique sport in that draftees don't make it for 2-4 years and one bad year could knock a prospect way down the totem pole. Top 10 prospect lists change wildly almost every year so we'll see. Hopefully 3-4 of those named can not only make it here but can be impact players.
  16. Cannot agree. Buxton is still one of the best CF in the game. But his tendency to get hurt almost every year kills the Twins. I've advocated trading him and will continue to do so. But to get the most value, we may have to let him start the season and, if not injured, then deal him before or at the deadline.
  17. Back problems are a death sentence for a catcher. Make him a first baseman or DH and maybe his offense will take off. Otherwise, it's a wasted deal. Don't hope for anything as a catcher.
  18. I don't believe KC will repeat last season's success. I'm not even crazy about Cleveland except they have Classe. Detroit is the only team that will definitely finish ahead of the Twins. Everyone seems to forget how decent we were until August when our pitching stayed ok despite losing Ryan but our offense went south. I can see us finishing second but maybe not have enough wins to make the wild card. Last year was a fluke with 3 Central teams making the playoffs.
  19. I can see the Twins trading Paddack but don't expect to get much back for him. I can't see them trading Castro with his versatility and the number of injuries we seem to get every year. I would keep Vasquez unless we are overwhelmed with a deal. The talk of trading Lopez and/or Duran or Jax is just stupid for a team as thin as we are. I'd wait and see how the first part of the season goes before making any of those moves. There are a few sluggers out there still and secondary starters and relievers. I guess we'll see. Alonso is a good one but is a big hit or (mostly) miss in key situations which is why teams aren't paying the big bucks for him yet. Mountcastle would be a good fit. Despite what his agent says, I don't see Sasaki signing with the Twins. And what about Santander who nobody mentions? So we give up a draft choice. Who cares? Happy New Year.
  20. Ford will most likely DH if he makes the team. It's probably 50-50 for him to make it and it's a cheap chance for lightening in a bottle. He can hit 15 homers and bat .230 if he gets 300 at bats but I don't expect much more if even that much. I don't know anything about Gasper, don't expect much out of Julian and, though I like Miranda, he could be decent or drop down to a .250 hitter. Outside of his great streak last year he didn't seem to do that much.
  21. I'd rather have Santana. If they can't sign him, maybe see if we can get Anthony Rizzo for cheap. I doubt it but maybe he would take a 1 or 2 year deal for cheap. But I still like Carlos best.
  22. If relievers are a dime a dozen, why didn't we get a couple who could have helped last season? Jax wants to start and the Twins could give him that chance. He'd only need to go 5 innings then we can bring in.....wait, who can we bring in? The Twins could float him to see what they can get but I wouldn't trade him unless the haul is for at least 2 major leaguers and that's doubtful. Then that leaves a hole in our pitching staff. To h-ll with those secondary stats. He's been very good and is expected to continue to be very good.
  23. Castro has been a valuable asset but the "key" to next year? Oy vey! Are we in trouble!
  24. Kiriloff never really was a factor during his career so there is nobody to replace. I'd go with Miranda and see who is available as a backup. I like Santana but I don't think we can expect even as good a season again- and it wasn't great. None of the other choices impress me unless there is a minor leaguer I don't know about. Someone like Wallner or Larnach could get some reps in the Spring.
  25. I don't see the Twins trading any of these players though we are a small market team who doesn't pay when players become expensive. A lot depends on why this team collapsed in the final 30 games. Was it fatigue as it seemed? Was it that we really weren't as good as we thought? The front office will have to decide. And are the Royals, Tigers and Guardians as good as they wound up this season? And what about teams like the Rangers and Mariners who never really got started? There aren't many free agents to sign as many are getting on in age or have big questions and I don't think Soto is in the mix for us. It's going to be an interesting winter.
