  1. I've been relatively happy with the direction the franchise is moving since the new front office took over. With that said, it is way too early to say that Falvey and Levine are "crushing it". To me :"crushing it" would mean they've managed to assemble a team capable of legitimately competing in the playoffs. At this point the pitching staff is still quite a ways from being able to match up against the better teams in the league and seeing how this is addressed will be a big factor in evaluating the new regime. There are plenty of avenues to upgrade the pitching and at this point I'll take an optimistic wait and see perspective on the new front office.
  2. I'm glad the Twins have been able to leverage some of the international money for a couple good prospects. I'm still hoping they can re-sign Marte and one of the prospects the Braves lost.
  3. Sorry, I was mistaken. After reading the procedure closer it looks like the one game playoff only applies for the division champion. A wild card tie depends on the tie breaker criterion.
  4. I'm not an expert on the intricacies of the minor league playoff system, but I did find the following (http://www.milb.com/milb/standings/playoff_procedures.jsp?lid=117&sid=l117): ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- International League playoff procedures Tie in the final standings If two teams finish the regular season in a tie for first place within their division and both teams will advance to the Governors' Cup playoffs, the teams will be considered division co-champions and the following tiebreaker format will be used to determine which team enters the postseason as the division champion and which will enter as the wild card. If only one team will advance to the Governors' Cup playoffs, the two teams shall play one game the next day after the regular season concludes to determine their final standing. The additional game will be considered an extension of the championship season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since Rochester and Lehigh Valley are tied for the wild card I take the above to mean there will be a one game playoff. Is that correct, or am I misreading the situation?
  5. It's clearly time to give the young talent some time in the majors. Since the majority of players struggle during their first major league stint it would make a lot of sense to give the youngsters playing time in order to give them the best chance to be positive contributors next year. With that in mind I would love to see: - Two of Gonsalves/Romero/.Jorge/Enns in the starting rotation for Colon/Gibson - Garver taking over the Gimenez role - Three from the Curtis/Reed/Melotakis/Moya/Rosario/Bard group replacing Belisle/Boshers/Gee
  6. Starting with the current 40 man roster (and guys on DL) I would break down the roster as follows: Pitchers returning (15): Berrios, Busenitz, Chargois. Duffey, Enns, Hildenberger, Hughes, Jorge, May, Mejia, Pressly, Rogers, Romero, Rosario, Santana Position players returning (11): Castro, Garver, Dozier, Escobar, Mauer, Polanco, Sano, Buxton, Granite, Kepler, Rosario Borderline players (7): Gibson, O'Rourke, Adrianza, Vielma, Palka, Grossman, Vargas Gone (9): Belisle, Boshers, Colon, Gee, Perkins, Santiago, Turley, Gimenez, Recker That would make 26 solid roster spots and I'm guessing 2 or 3 from the borderline list (one of Adrianza/Vielma and one or two of Grossman/Vargas/Palka). That would leave 11-12 spots for rule 5 eligible players. My guess at who gets added: Rule 5 players added to roster (11): Gonsalves, Stewart, Diaz, Thorpe, Littell, Curtis, Reed, Burdi, Moya, Sledgers, Bard I also expect to see Moya, Sledger, Bard, and Melotakis up this season and their performance will have an impact on the last roster spots for next season.
  7. I don't really get why the Twins got Recker from Atlanta. The Twins already had 4 catchers on the 40 man roster and don't currently have room for another catcher at AAA (or the majors). I can only assume there's another deal near completion that moves Gimenez or one of the AAA catchers.
  8. I'm a bit surprised Melotakis cleared waivers. It makes me wonder if there's something wrong with him if no other team was interested in taking a chance on a lefty who has had good velocity in the past.
  9. In his last two starts Gibson has managed to only give up 3 runs, but looking at the rest of his stats shows he was not very good. Last 2 starts: 10.2 IN, 3 ER, 12 H, 7 BB, 5 SO, 3 HR Take out the relatively low number of runs allowed and that is a pretty awful couple of games. My guess is if he had similar H/BB/SO/HR numbers over a 10 game stretch he'd have an ERA over 6.
  10. How sad is it that Santiago and his 5.26 ERA looks pretty good right now.
  11. Sano and Santana should make it. I don't see anyone else particularly close (Berrios just won't have enough starts to make a case).
  12. So, in the first two games against the team we're competing with for the lead in the AL central our starting pitchers have combined for 8 IN, 17 H, 7 BB, and 14 ER (15.75 ERA). It's hard to see the Twins staying in the race without doing something to improve the starting rotation.
  13. There could be some really ugly numbers put up by the pitching in the first game today. I can see Molitor leaving guys out there way longer than they should be in order to try to save the bullpen for the second game.
  14. Twins starting pitchers other than Santana and Berrios have a combined 6.14 ERA in 43 games (including tonight). I'm amazed that the team has been this competitive when 3/5 of the rotation has been so weak.
  15. Seems like the money should be pretty close to slot value when considering the combination of Leach and Enlow, so hopefully the Twins still have most of the Lewis/Rooker savings to work with.
  16. At the end of the day I'd much rather have drafted Hunter Green, Sam Carlson, and Matt Sauer.
  17. Based on recent draft history the two options for the 1st pick have been to take the best player or to take a lower ranked player and use the money to grab a player who fell with the team's next pick. Since the Twins did neither of these I'm unsure what the plan would be. I guess they could have a plan, it's just not something that has been done before.
  18. This is the type of drafting a front office can get away with when they have a proven track record for success, it's a lot harder to be optimistic when the front office is new. Reaching for all 3 first day picks with no clear plan to use the saved money is not promising.
  19. So much for grabbing a player who fell at #35 or #37. I can't say I'm very impressed with the first day of the draft for the Twins.
  20. The strategy of getting above slot talent that slips at #35 isn't looking good at this point. Carlson and Kendall are about the only top 20 players still on the board.
  21. i wanted Greene, would have been fine with Wright, and could even see a case for Gore. I'm really disappointed with the Lewis pick and fear it's going to haunt the organization for the next decade.
  22. Falvey and Levine pass on pitching and reach for a high school SS. This is the kind of thing that will define their tenure in Minnesota for good or bad.
  23. I wonder if the Twins offered Belisle and the Rangers chose PTBNL instead.
  24. So the Twins are down to 4 relievers on their 40 man roster who have an ERA under 4, and one of those is Boshers.
