  • Twins Minor League Report (4/20): Cossetti Continues to Clobber

    Ted Schwerzler

Despite rain in St. Paul on Thursday night, all four Minnesota Twins affiliates got their games in, and it was down in Fort Myers where the thunder was provided. Andrew Cossetti has been on a tear, and nothing stopped him tonight either.

    TRANSACTIONS

    • C Charles Mack activated from IL for Cedar Rapids
    • C Wilfri Castro transferred to FCL

    SAINTS SENTINEL
    St. Paul 5, Scranton/WB 3
    Box Score

Toby Gardenhire turned to Jose De Leon for the start tonight, and he was nothing short of spectacular. Working four scoreless innings, De Leon allowed just two hits and two walks while punching out five. He once was dangled as a trade chip for Brian Dozier, and is now pushing for a debut with the Twins.

The scoring started and ended in the third inning for the Saints. Rehabbing Twins first baseman Alex Kirilloff doubled to score both Elliot Soto and Matt Wallner. It was Soto's double that set up the additional runs. Mark Contreras continued his hot hitting with a double of his own to plate Kirilloff and Kyle Garlick. St. Paul had put up a four spot in the third inning and jumped out ahead.

Scranton clawed back with runs in the fifth inning, seventh inning, and eighth inning, but ultimately they fell just short. Hernan Perez clubbed his second hit of the night, a solo shot in the eighth inning, to give St. Paul a bit of breathing room.

Kirilloff finished his night going 2-for-3 while also being hit by a pitch.

    WIND SURGE WISDOM
    Tulsa 3, Wichita 0
    Box Score

Making the start for Wichita was Travis Adams. He lasted four innings and allowed just a pair of runs on four hits. Adams walked a pair, but also struck out four batters. The pair of runs came on a solo homer and a wild pitch.

Jonny DeLuca led off the game for the Drillers with a solo blast in the bottom of the first inning. Adams buckled down, and while he did allow Diego Cartaya to score on a second inning wild pitch, no other damage mounted.

DaShawn Keirsey Jr. made an amazing catch in centerfield to rob additional runs, but that didn't spark a Wichita comeback. The Wind Surge tallied just three hits on the evening, and Brooks Lee finally went without a hit (ending his 10-game hitting streak), though he did reach on a walk. With the lineup stalling out, a comeback was never in the works.

    KERNELS NUGGETS
    Beloit 3, Cedar Rapids 2
    Box Score

The Kernels turned to Jordan Carr for the start on Thursday, and he worked around six hits during his 4 1/3 innings of work. While two runs came across, only one was earned. Carr allowed a walk and struck out three.

Cedar Rapids scored first when Kala’i Rosario tripled to drive in Noah Miller as the third batter of the game. It was the start of what would wind up being an impressive night for the outfielder.

After giving the run back in the bottom of the second inning, and seeing another tacked on in the fifth inning, the sixth inning saw Cedar Rapids get even. Third baseman Ben Ross smacked his second home run of the season, and his blistering start to his 2023 season continued.

Unfortunately, the Sky Carp’s Yiddi Cappe singled for the second time on the night in the seventh inning, and his RBI was the difference in this one. Adding a run, the Kernels never rallied and that hit was the difference. Rosario was the lone Kernels batter to post multiple hits, but he was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and triple.

    MUSSEL MATTERS
    Fort Myers 11, Jupiter 1
    Box Score

Cory Lewis was on the bump for Fort Myers on Thursday, and he continued to rack up strikeouts. Working five innings, he allowed just a single run on a solo shot. It was the only hit against him, and while he walked a pair, Lewis also racked up six strikeouts.

Although Lewis kept Jupiter down in the game, he was also given immediate breathing room. Andrew Cossetti stepped in with Michael Helman, Jorel Ortega, and Ricardo Olivar all on base. He drilled his fourth homer of the year, a grand slam, and put the Mighty Mussels up early. It’s been an impressive week for the slugger.

After the solo blast against Lewis, Fort Myers immediately answered. Cossetti came through again, this time with a bases-clearing double. Ortega, Danny De Andrade, and Olivar all came across the plate. Maddux Houghton followed up with a fielder’s choice to score Cossetti, and it was an 8-1 lead when the bottom of the fifth inning concluded.

Looking for more insurance runs, Houghton hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to bring Carlos Aguiar home. The Mighty Mussels plated nine runs on just six hits. Both Cossetti and De Andrade recorded a pair of hits on the evening. Helman played shortstop and led off as he is rehabbing before returning to St. Paul. He did draw a pair of walks.

Capping off the scoring, Dalton Shuffield tripled in the eighth inning to score Mikey Perez and Dylan Neuse. A 10-run rule could have been enforced, but the ninth inning didn’t change the score either. Fort Myers did a great job continuing to add runs all night long.

Cossetti has all but wrapped up the hitter of the week with the last two days performance. Rosario, with his 4 for 4 day for the Kernels, gets hitter of the day almost any other day but today. Speaking of the Kernels, that roster shouldn't be losing 6 in a row.

Kirilloff looking great with two hits and a stolen base. I'm ready for him to be up with the Twins. We desperately need more hitters like him and Polanco.

That's the thing about minor-league ball... The Kernels have a lot of prospects, but that's in large part because the Twins have pushed a bunch of 19, 20 and 21 year olds there getting to play most days against a lot of 22-24 year olds. Their futures may be brighter, but at this stage, the experience of the older players likely wins games. This team may not win a ton, especially in the first half... but maybe by the second half, they've made some adjustments and their talent matches their prospect status, and they could be solid in the second half.

I thought they might keep Kirilloff at AAA for a while to prove he was truly ready but he sure looks ready out of the gate.  A couple weeks anywhere near this pace and it would be hard to keep him down.  Kirilloff and Polanco on the right side of the infield will be a welcome sight.

Can anyone enlighten me as to Cossetti's relative ability defensively?

I think AK only stays down much longer if his wrist starts to act up.  Hopefully that does not happen.  He clearly has the ability to hit, when his wrist is healthy.  I hope he gets called up soon.  Our offense could use a jolt.

Really happy to see Rosario have an exceptional day at the plate.  He looked so good in the spring training games with patience at the plate and home runs mixed in.  I thought he would have a better start than he has had so far.  I'm going to blame it on the April weather for now.  If the plate discipline is there I think he has a bright future as the bat has plenty of pop and hopefully enough contact to make him special.

Still SSS but Cossetti has been impressive.  More walks than K's. 6 of his 11 hits have been for extra bases 4 of those home runs and his OPS is 1,280.  Those are nice numbers for a catcher.  He has come up in some favorable plate appearances with the bases loaded the pitcher is generally forced to throw strikes and he isn't exactly young for the level but those are really nice numbers regardless. If he has the defense to match could we have a true catching prospect\top 30 candidate?

Ross continues to hit and I am surprised that he is hitting for power although he does have a lot of singles too.  It looks like he has been very aggressive at the plate as the K rate is much higher than his walk rate.  I thought that was more balanced when he was in college.  At any rate all the SSS look good for him so far.  He looks like a really good contact hitter to me.

Lewis pitched really well and I hope to continue to see lines like that from him.  Several posters were pretty high on his potential right after he was drafted so hoping for good things there as well.

Some tough nights early especially for the Kernals but hoping that with the weather warming the bats will warm up a bit more too.

Maybe it isn’t the stat sheet that will determine when and if AK is ready. His extra base hits have gone to left field and he is playing seven innings so far with only one back-to-back appearance. If he hits a couple balls off the right field wall (or over it) and plays two or three consecutive nine-inning games, then he will probably be ready to help the Twins.

I asked that question about Cossetti & still haven't got an answer.

Kiriloff looks good to me, we could use his LH bat.

Like everyone else, I have no idea of what Cossetti can do defensively at this point.  Also, as a senior sign, he's almost as old as the two guys from the previous draft (Winkel and Cardenas), so I'm going to take his hitting numbers in low A with a grain of salt.  Hopefully he keeps it up and earns a promotion quickly so he can be tested against more age appropriate competition.

I think assignments for catchers can sometimes be a bit of a proxy for how the org views them defensively.  I'm a little surprised that Winkel has gotten promoted faster than Cardenas, as Cardenas has hit better by the numbers, and seems to be better at throwing out baserunners by the numbers as well.  I take it they might think that Winkel is a little more advanced when it comes to all the other stuff, blocking, framing, game calling, etc.  From the little I've watched of Cardenas I thought it looked like he had pretty good hands to go with his arm.

They could also just be being more deliberate with Cardenas's development path vs Winkel, and they just needed another catcher in AA, I don't know.

I'm starting to buy into Ross more and more.  It's always hard to know how a hitter from a small school will adjust to much higher competition, and when they perform as well as he has you have to take notice.

He hasn't walked much but the strikeouts are well under control and developmentally he seems to already be farther along than many guys drafted in the same range out of the best D1 conferences.

It seems like a very nice scouting job and a good pick to bet on a guy without the track record against better competition.

Has Polanco done anything at the plate yet? I am getting really worried about him this year.

He's got a few hits. Sometimes veterans are just working on certain things, like they would in spring training, when on these rehab assignments. Not sure if that is the case here though.

Julien, Kirilloff, Garlick, and Wallner all in the lineup tonight for the Saints. The season is less than a month old and three of those guys have been up to the majors and down. The fourth is probably going to be playing for the Twins within a couple of weeks.

I really appreciate these posts about the minor league action and players. I have gleaned so much additional knowledge from the game analyses and from the various posters. Thanks to everyone who has their fingers on the pulse of what is happening.

PS-I have been following Rosario for awhile now. I'm not sure why...maybe it's his first name, which I've never heard before (but it may be a common Hawai'ian name for all I know) or his last name, which evokes memories of days gone by.
