That none of the pitchers signed even came close to a 14 million a year contract should be reason enough not to think they should have.

OK Vargas maybe doesn't belong, but I think the other 3 do, and could add Colon and Arroyo too.

 

Its only an overpay in AAV. All these guys so far have signed for multiple years though, so the QO is an underpay in that respect.

 

If the Twins want to bring back Pelfrey now, they're going to have to guarantee 2, and maybe 3 (or 4?) years.

 

So a few extra mil up front seems like a small price to pay for the insurance against losing talented guys and keeping some flexibility in the long term. JMO

$14MM for Pelfrey?? Yikes!! I expect Garza's annual salary over the (expected) 4-6 year life-of-contract won't be much more than $14MM. Perhaps the Twins still think there is a decent chance to sign him. I fully expect that Pelfrey signs a contract (with some other team) for considerably less than $14MM.

How is paying a guy 14 million for one season an underpay when the next year you do not have the player or would have to extend another qualifying offer? The second stretch in logic is that the the teams wanted the players at a higher salary to begin with. You may view it as a mistake, but what is the bassis for that kind of salaries for these players. There is none.

Pelfrey will get around $14m for two years. He'd take a QO in a heartbeat so why offer it? You can get his services for two years at that price if you want him around that badly.

Hudson wouldn't get a qualifying offer from the Braves. Simply doesn't fit into the organization's financial structure for 2014 to pay him $14M. Sad, but to an organization once bitten by offering arbitration to a free agent, offering it to a free agent that they couldn't afford to accept was not in the cards.

New math? One year of a contract at a bloated value is cheaper for a team than a 2 year contract. After you would have paid Kazmir 14 million for one year versus 22 over 2, what do you do the second year. Over the same time period to retain services of the player you will pay far more.
