Austin Hays

The White Sox just released this guy today. He's been injured nearly all year but is apparently healthy now. His strength is that he hits left handed pitching, which is something the Twins have lacked, particularly of late.

Corner OF, pinch-hit. He would replace Alan Roden for now and perhaps Martin if/when there is full health in position players.

Speaking of which, injuries to Buxton and Jeffers notwithstanding, the Twins have been extraordinarily healthy on the position player side. Not so much with the pitching unfortunately.

Roden is taking good at bats and making good contact. He has among the better xwOBA. His poor OPS is partially bad luck. He also reached on base three times on error in a Cleveland game and two could have been hits. He had a walk off drive off the wall that was rules a single since it ended the game. It takes nearly a full season of regular play for slash stats to stabilize. Let’s not look at them until we get there.

Roden has just over 200 AB's and a batting ave of .199 and OPS of .557.  He has had three different stints in the major leagues and has done nothing to grab ahold of any of these opportunities.  This was not his only time up here and he just has not performed well enough to earn a spot when there are others ready to come up behind him.

I am not for signing Hayes, I would rather have Jenkins up here.

He's had low BABIP in each of his short tries in the majors.  A total of 207 PA is still within "small sample size", but better outcomes are starting to be overdue.  (I'd also like to see some power begin showing up.)

All else being equal, I like my team's players to be lucky.  Joe Mauer was extraordinarily lucky his entire career, and we in turn were lucky to have him.   😁

As for Hays, meh.

He has been just recently. That's the thing with SSSS data. A little change here or there has a big shift. I just don't see how Roden fits well on the roster right now given how heavy the Twins are on left handed bats and the Twins firmly committed to the platoon game.

Concur on Hays. I don’t think he helps.

We can debate Mauer’s luck as related to the quality of his contact in another place.

I would have Kreidler, Martin, Jackson and Caratini on the bench against a right handed pitcher instead of Roden so I see a fit. Hays isn’t helping here. In games where Jeffers isn’t catching. He might be at DH with Bell at 1B, Lewis at 2B and Clemens in RF but even then the defense is worse and it might be better to sit Bell or Lewis and play Roden.

I wouldn’t option Martin or DFA Jackson for Hays.

I wouldn’t option Martin or DFA Jackson for Hays.

You would sit Lewis who has been our hottest hitter just so Roden can play.  This is the problem with this team, they need some set positions and then someone needs a day off you slot them in.  But Roden is not the answer and I would not sit Lewis for Roden or move him to 2B so Bell can be a butcher at 1B.
