The Dodgers’ impressive offseason got even better late Sunday night, as the club and All-Star outfielder Teoscar Hernández agreed to a one-year, $23.5 million contract, sources confirmed to MLB.com. The club has not confirmed the deal.

Dodgers must see where the hole is in that 41% K rate from last year. Good gravy...

I mean, are the Dodgers literally printing their own money?  Are they just throwing stacks of it into the air and allowing the players to grab whatever they can?

If this is actually a reasonable contract, then what does that say about MK and his 10M pricetag?  Awfully tempting in trade.

It's a good AAV but a lot of outlets had him getting a lot more total on a 3 or 4 year deal.

Also he's only getting $15 million this year and the rest is deferred until after 2030, so I would guess the "present value" using the same discount methodology as the Ohtani contract is well under $20 million.  Maybe call it 1-year $18-$19 million.  Is that a big overpay? I think probably not.

If he has a good season he will still make out very well, as he'll be able to sign a multi-year deal next year after getting $15 million and a nice annuity for his retirement.

But it's a fairly low-risk deal for a team like the Dodgers who have a ton of money and obviously have no problem with deferments.

I don't want to call it a gross overpay. I guess the market is up. Someone is probably going to give MAT 8-10 million after he made 4.5 last season. Players are getting paid high dollars this coming year. What's Bellinger going to demand. 25 to 30. It's crazy.

All the more reason to cash in on Max and Polo.  They are starting to sound like, not just reasonable salaries, but downright bargains.  With rookies to replace, their trade equity must be cashed in.

Sooner or later, whether salaries are deferred or not, the cash register at the gate is going to scream more loudly. Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. The owners are not going to let their margins decrease, all the while signing these large contracts.

We'll see how much the public can stand, though much of the gate is commercially purchased. And ads for the video/audio of the game? How much will advertisers be willing to go along with increased cost in air time?

I'd say at this point Bellinger is getting over $30M/yr.

I bet you could read that every decade since the game started. And yet, here we are.

MAT performed ok with the bat last year, and with his defense, was a positive player for the Twins.  MAT is worth around $8-10 million especially if he can perform the same way next year.  Taylor has been a very productive outfielder for the last 3 years.  He got a raw deal by becoming a free agent in 2021 with the depressed rates from Covid when he signed his 2 year 9 million contract after a 1 year 1.7 million contract in 2020.
