I had a little time to kill so I started  a shallow dive into possible Rule 5 players the Twins could add that would address a need for the ‘24 season.
My first find is the #20 prospect from Pittsburgh, OF Matt Gorski. He has power and speed but has had injury issues.  He seems perfect for us.
If you have time and want to chime in on who you think would be a good rule 5 pick up next week, here is an opportunity for you to play FO for a day!

Some names I've seen:

Matt Sauer (NYY) throws 95-96, had a good year in AA with a nice strikeout rate. Move him to the bullpen and see what happens.

Ian Bedell (STL) pitched very well at A+ and will be a year further away from Tommy John. Maybe you hide him in the bullpen and send him back to the minors later to have him keep working on being a starter.

@Danchat I wonder if the FO is going to take a flier on a guy if a certain someone they are watching falls to them.  Just trying to pull a rabbit out of the hat and have a guy like Castro make an impact 2 years in a row. Seems like something they would try since they have a limited budget and they love to buy damaged goods at the thrift store….

Hard pass on the draft this year. There is next to no room on the roster for an offensive player, and the little room they can squeeze out needs to go to upgrades not scratch off tickets. And if they are comfortable with the untested youth, they already have at least a half dozen of their own players better than what's in the draft sitting in St. Paul and Wichita. They need at least one more high end starter and a second wouldn't hurt. They could pick a guy for the pen, but this team cycles through the back of the bullpen regularly, this isn't a team that can hide a guy.

Let teams like the Royals, Pirates and A's have fun in the sandbox, the Twins don't have room.

Last year, the Twins essentially used a 12-man pitching staff plus their "long reliever", who went unused for long amounts of time. If they get the same type of starting performances and health from their primary bullpen guys, I could see them taking a flyer on an intriguing arm. IMHO, the Twins have much better position player prospects in the high minors than their pitchers as evidenced by their moves before the Rule V deadline.

It wouldn't surprise me if they claim a couple of DFAs when free agents are signed and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they take a chance on an arm in the Rule V. Call it dumpster diving, scratch and dent sales, thrift store pickups, it looks to me like this is the mode the Twins are in at this point.

With how the Twins use their roster there would have to be enough relievers for a St Paul shuttle to pick a player to stash. If the player could help this year they would select them. The likelihood of that happening is small considering the teams ahead of them in the draft

My wife is great at finding expensive Crystal and China sets for pennies on the dollar at thrift stores. The Twins need to hire someone to do the same with a player or two every year.  Like my wife says, there is always someone selling something that they don’t realize is worth more than they know.  Since the Twins owners don’t want to budget according to their market size, they better find some rough diamonds and shine them up by April.
