Nine of twelve Verified Member Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 Double warning: this is both a pet peeve and a nitpick. In MLB, the games played after the regular season which eventually determine the World Champion are NOT the playoffs. This portion of the schedule is correctly referred to as The Postseason. In MLB, games played in addition to the 162 scheduled regular season games that are needed to determine Postseason berths are correctly referred to as playoff games and are part of the regular season. MLB is not the NFL or the NHL or the NBA. Those leagues have playoffs to determine their champions. This is certainly not of vital importance but I think anyone who writes or talks about any subject professionally should use correct terminology, and this certainly applies to baseball journalists. Muppet Verified Member Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 You'll forgive me for screwing it up. They've changed the postseason calendar, rules, format, etc... seemingly about 30 times since I was young. RpR 1
chpettit19 Community Moderator Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 May want to send this over to MLB.com since they use them pretty interchangeably. DJL44, Craig Arko, Mike Sixel and 1 other 4
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 While I find precise language of great value in technical subjects, for general speech that which gets the idea across will suffice. Mike Sixel and Rod Carews Birthday 2
Dave Borton Verified Member Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 Can send your idea along to the Twins. Language seems to be morphing there. Teflon Verified Member Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 For the Minnesota Twins, games played after the regular season are more often called "Forgone Conclusions," Vanimal46, Mike Sixel, Dave Borton and 1 other 4
