Bollinger: Deduno Scratched Sunday, May Not be Ready for Season

Deduno was a candidate to be part of the club's starting rotation, especially after he posted a 0.69 ERA with 17 strikeouts and five walks in 13 innings in the Classic.

 

But now it appears that the non-roster invitee will have trouble being ready for the season. Other candidates for the back end of the rotation include Liam Hendriks, Cole De Vries and Walters

My guess is that Deduno was told: "you're injured". In this way Deduno can be kept off of the Active Roster yet not be exposed to someone claiming him were he optioned to Rochester. IMO, Ryan abhors the concept of Deduno in the rotation (ergo why he was removed from the 40-man Roster)--but far worse were some team claim him from the opton process to Rochester, and then become a 15+ game winner!

He can't be claimed, even if he wasn't injured. He's not on the 40-man, so he wouldn't be optioned. He's a non-roster invitee; he can just be moved to the minor league camp whenever the Twins want.

Yes, the Twins hate DeDuno so much that they gave him a good number of starts last year, then brought him back into the organization this year. Clearly. How did we all miss this?

On TV today Anderson said that Deduno hurt himself pitching in the rain in his last WBC start. Watching that game, he had trouble, his plant foot was slipping on the wet mound. Yes, he is not on the 40 man roster so he doesn't need to be optioned.

This is too bad, and I wish him a speedy recovery. It would be a silver lining if Hendriks took what now should be fairly clearly his spot and seized it.

The bigger fear was adding him back on the roster, then him pitching okay but not better than DeVries or Hendriks, and having to go thru waivers before rejoining a minor league team. Because of the lack of movable pieces on the 40-man, pretty much expect to see Butera, Roiencke and Wood start the season with the Twins (and Pressly). Those are the only names on the bubble. If any start slow, they will be waived and not return to the Twins, then the Twins can start addint the Deduno, Ramirez etc.

Deduno injured his groin in the wet conditions in the championship game of the WBC. Several replays showed his foot slipping on the mound, though the umps did nothing to improve footing. He will need rest and rehab for up to two weeks, then he'll need to get ramped up with the appropriate inngings load. my best guess for his major league ability it May 1.

If he isn't able to pitch better then Cole DeVries is it really a "fear" to put him on waivers to send him down?

I think he'll do very well once he gets up to the bigs, but I think this injury, while it is totally legit, is a blessing in disguise. It gives the team an excuse to keep him off the 40 man a bit longer, and give him a little more time to ramp up to top form, while also giving the guys already on the roster a chance to sink or swim in real games.

 

I would bet within the first month of the season one of our other pitchers will pull a Matt Maloney and make it REALLY easy to decide who needs to go to make room for Deduno.

So, with today's news on Wood, the pitching injuries and rehabs include: Diamond, Swarzak, Harden, Perez, Deduno, Wood. Not exactly an injury-free spring training, but with so many recovering from injuries, I guess it is to be expected.
