Do we need to make that move right now, or do we get to wait until he's with the team? (Assuming he didn't get to Miami yet.)

Unless they have changed the rules, the move to the roster for the acquired player is immediate. Thus, making room is also immediate.

 

It hasn’t happened recently, but there are examples of players switching teams between games of double headers.

 

Also famous in Twins history is the walk by Rick Aguilera from the bullpen to the dugout in about the 5th inning. Everyone in the park knew what was going on.
