Here is a press conference that Mauer did after the ceremony in which he discussed the emotions of the ceremony and some of the surprises that he wasn't aware of. I asked hijm about throwing a first pitch to his dad...

As it should. Character, howsomever the voters choose to interpret the word, is specifically mentioned in the instructions the HoF gives. It's not just the Hall Of The Best Stats.

To a certain extent yes but it's always going to be more about stats than the human being. There's a reason it's the location for the best players ever and not the nicest baseball players ever. There's plenty of questionable characters in there.

I don't think our views are too much out of alignment. "To A Certain Extent" is my middle name. I'm more of a Big Hall guy anyway, so I like good character as a tie breaker to let someone in.

Good question.

 

He has gotten more talkative and more comfortable at these things.  He is never going to be overly-animated, but I bet when he is just hanging out with his buddies he can tell a few stories.

 

I am assuming the concussion was the main reason he retired, but I wonder if he was already thinking about it when he learned he was going to have another baby in the fall.  He certainly seems to enjoy spending more time with those kids.
