Seattle is waiting for the Mets to finalize the Duensing contract, so he can be included in the deal, before pulling the trigger.

 

When asked by a Seattle Times beat reporter why he just didn't sign Duensing himself, Mariners GM Jerry DiPoto replied, "Listen, I don't tell you how to report the news, do I? Don't think so. Even rook level, newby GM's know that Duensing HAS to be part of any blockbuster. Duh."

He could have been. Instead they jumped at the first available 1B without letting the market play out. Now we're committed to Cron for better or worse (probably worse).

They aren't committed to anything. And I'd guess the Mariners flip Santana again. And Jay Bruce and Anthony Swarzak if possible.

Cron for Santana. Everyone wins (except the Twins, I don't think Santana alone does it, and they won't spend bigly on a SP if they bring in Santana, imo).

I still don't know that Cron's contract is guaranteed; I recall learning that arbitration players can be cut anytime prior to opening day at no cost to the team, but I'm not sure where I learned that or whether it's true.  Can anyone clarify?

They didn't offer Cron arbitration. They agreed to a $4.8 million deal to avoid arbitration. Now it's guaranteed and on the payroll.

I may have missed the arbitration buyout., but the way the Mariners have been flipping these vets, were they to move Santana and his remaining contract, a Cron or Austin type seem to be going back to Seattle in return.

 

But Cron was better than Santana last year anyway and he's 4 years younger. If folks are upset about the $5M going to Cron, I don't understand why $20M to Santana is a good deal. I've always liked the guy and wanted him as a free agent last year, but he is 32, odds are he's not going to get better with age.

If the Mariners (or Phillies) are/were considering Santana an overall negative value and were giving the better accompanying package (Mitch Haniger, please) to shed the payroll, I'd be all for the Twins eating the salary for the better baseball talent.

 

If it's in a vacuum and we're discussing if we'd rather have the 29-year-old with a career .772 OPS but saw it increase to .812 last year, or if we'd rather have the 33-year-old with a career .805 OPS but a near career worst figure of .766 last year, I'd think the younger guy would be much preferred.

Yeah, what mike said. There's no clear answer and definitely not trying to be argumentative. I think Santana would be a good fit and he's only under contract for two more years (team option for third year).

If Austin gets waived I'd be disappointed. I'd think he'd be a lock to be claimed though, so I'd think if Austin is out of the equation something else would be coming back in trade, though I'm still hoping it's Kepler in a larger package that clears some room.

 

Honestly though, while I'd like to give Austin a nice long look I don't think his 36% career strikeout rate bodes well for his future. Cron or no Cron, he kind of looks like one of those big corner bats that bounces around until he's suddenly gone because teams are teased by the power potential but then they quickly grow tired wasting an at bat every third time to the plate.

 

It was better in the minors though, maybe there's some hope.

The Cardinals have been well-run for years on the development side, having some of the best farm system coaching in the game. 

 

Once you have a sustaining farm system and a development system that will continue to create major league players out of the players that are put into that farm system, whether they're top 5 picks or #30 overall picks, you will see plenty of success. 

 

The Twins have been building a system in that way over the last few years. It's been incredibly impressive to see the way the Twins develop arms and young bats in the system. Now it just needs to happen at the big leagues with a few guys for fans to see the fruits of that labor.
