BA's League Top 20 Prospect Lists Thread

I saw Rooker the first week of the season and he was a trainwreck but this was asked in the BA chat today:

 

 

Bob (Minn): Who is the real Brent Rooker? Is there something about his approach that would lead to him either being scalding hot or ice cold?

 

Matt Eddy: I think a couple factors are in play here. Firstly, Rooker has been pushed aggressively by the Twins. He is the only position player to spend all of 2017 at Double-A, to my knowledge. That's only fair. He was roughly a year older than the other premium bats from his draft class. And second, the Southern League is a punishing assignment for any player, let alone one embarking on his first five-month pro season. The oppressive humidity and constant threat of rain are factors, as are the league's five-game series format which can tend to key opponents into their opponents' weaknesses much quicker. Every source I contacted expressed optimism that Rooker would get to his power frequently in the majors -- the only questions are what kind of AVG will he produce and how many runs will he give back defensively?

Just my completely amateur opinion, but I think Rooker will be an OK hitter, just not a very good one. By that I mean a .250-.260 hitter with 30+ doubles and 20-30HR. I will take that all day long. Where does my opinon come from? Well, the power is obvious, and he is reportedly a good athlete who runs fairly well, hence the consistent 30+ doubles. He has hit reasonably well this far, and made adjustments, but is also SO prone.

 

As to his defense, who knows? But defense can be worked on and learned, especially if you are a decent athlete with a solid arm. My best guess is primary DH and back up 1B and corner OF.

That stat line, in today's environment is a lot better than OK......if he walks at all. That's anywhere from league average hitter, to 20% better....again, depending on if it is 30HR and some walks, or 20HRs and no walks....

 

Only 74 qualified hitters had a BA higher than .260......

Royce Lewis was #1 in the Florida State League and the Midwest League.

 

Alex Kirilloff was #2 in the Florida State League and #3 in the Midwest League (I believe).

Wow, I knew those two were great but I had no idea we had the top two players in the FSL, is that indicative of the talent pool or are those two just that good?

I think MLB Pipeline has Lewis ranked #7 overall and Kirilloff ranked #110 overall in their postseason Top Prospect rankings... so I think they're both pretty good.

110 must be a typo.....I'm guessing that's 10....
