I found a site that rates the impact of DL stints on teams.....and it does not back up the idea the Twins' problems are "mostly" or even " a lot" about injuries.

 

now, it won't include Polanco, but if he's a 4 WAR player, they lost 2 WAR there.....

 

I don't know if this is a great analysis or a good one, or (less likely) a completely inaccurate one. What it does for me is point out how other teams are doing, which is not something I pay close attention to, as I am more into looking at the Twins than how they compare to other teams....

I am highly doubtful Polanco will be a 4 WAR player. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I'm certainly not holding my breath.

 

And while injuries certainly aren't helping this team, I agree that they're not at the top of the list of things going wrong with the Twins.

Injuries sure hurt - is Mauer in this slump if he doesn't have the concussion flare up? But you're right that it's not the whole story and probably not the biggest part of the story. The biggest problem is that the young guys we're counting on have simply stunk. Obviously, bigger budget teams can get depth that's better than Jake Cave and/or Adrianza to help out but that's always been a problem with baseball.

The biggest problem is that the young guys we're counting on have simply stunk. Obviously, bigger budget teams can get depth that's better than Jake Cave and/or Adrianza to help out but that's always been a problem with baseball.

There's a disconnect with their injury rehab this year for sure. Mauer was rushed back from his rehab stint and his stats have declined since returning from injury.

 

We know the botched handling of Buxton. May and Erv haven't returned to form. Sano wasn't prepared to play after his surgery over the winter...

In my recent analysis, Polanco was worth approximately 2 WAR (somewhere between 1.6 to 2.5) last season. So half a season might be worth around 1 WAR... and with Adrianza being worth around 0.5 to 0.8 WAR, I can't say there's been much of a drop-off. But it's possible Polanco takes a big step forward and proves to be more valuable than his 2017 form.

good point - Buxton and Mauer playing through injury hurt this team as badly or worse than their replacements while on the DL
